Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — The Road to Maplewood City

Three weeks passed in a blur of fire, steam, and grain.

Ren Kai woke each morning before dawn to the scent of rice cooking. Elder Yun's kitchen had become his world—a cathedral of flame and flavor where every pot, knife, and ingredient held something left for him to learn.

He had arrived knowing how to follow a recipe.

Now, he was learning to listen.

To the crackle of oil in a wok.

To the whisper of steam escaping beneath a lid.

To the faint change in a grain's texture that told him it was ready, even before his eyes could confirm it.

Cooking was no longer a matter of following instructions. It was a conversation between the chef and the ingredients. Every dish had a rhythm, and every ingredient had something to say.

The journal Elder Yun had given him revealed its secrets slowly. Whenever he mastered a technique, new pages appeared, their characters burning into the paper as though they had been waiting for him all along.

The first recipe to emerge was the Blazing Rice Bowl.

It combined his improved Spiritual Rice with Fire-Aspected Chili, producing a dish that temporarily strengthened the eater's affinity for fire.

The next was Harmony Congee, a gentle porridge that stabilized Qi and helped heal minor wounds.

[Dish Mastered: Harmony Congee]

Chef EXP Gained: 25

Skill Improved: Qi Infusion Lv. 2

Neither dish was particularly complicated, but each taught him something new. The Blazing Rice Bowl taught him how to preserve and direct an ingredient's elemental properties. Harmony Congee taught him that not every dish needed to overwhelm its eater. Sometimes, the greatest achievement was bringing something unstable back into balance.

By the end of the first week, his cultivation had climbed to the seventh layer of Body Tempering.

By the second, he had reached the ninth.

The changes were becoming impossible to ignore. His body was stronger, his movements more precise, and his senses sharper. He could feel the heat of a flame before touching it and distinguish the spiritual properties of ingredients that would have looked ordinary to him only weeks earlier.

The system recorded his progress.

But of all the skills he had learned, Qi Infusion changed everything.

Elder Yun had taught it to him on the tenth day.

She stood beside him as a pot of rice simmered over a low flame, her hands guiding his while he carefully directed his Qi through the cooking vessel.

"Alchemists infuse their pills with spiritual energy," she explained. "They grind, mix, and heat their ingredients according to carefully measured formulas. Their methods are precise, but they treat ingredients as materials to be processed."

She adjusted his wrist.

"Cooking is different. You aren't simply adding energy to the ingredients. You're awakening the energy already within them. Your Qi is only the key."

Her hand settled over his.

Ren Kai felt her cultivation brush against his own.

It was like standing at the edge of an ocean. He could sense its depth, its immense pressure, and the terrifying calm beneath the surface. He couldn't begin to imagine how much power Elder Yun truly possessed.

"Now," she said. "Find the rice. Ask it to wake up."

He almost laughed.

Ask the rice to wake up?

But the amusement died before it reached his lips.

He felt something.

A faint pulse beneath the grains. An energy that had always been there, buried beneath their ordinary appearance. His Qi touched it, and instead of forcing its way inside, he let his intention settle around it.

The rice responded.

The grains swelled, not with water, but with light. A soft golden glow spread through the pot, illuminating the underside of the lid.

When Ren Kai finally lifted it, the bowl shone like captured sunlight.

[Skill Acquired: Qi Infusion Lv. 1]

He stared at the dish.

It wasn't made from some rare spiritual ingredient. There was no expensive herb, beast core, or precious mineral involved.

Just rice.

Ordinary rice, transformed through understanding.

Qi Infusion was the skill that could change the direction of his entire path. With it, he could awaken the potential hidden in common ingredients, reducing his dependence on rare resources.

Elder Yun examined the bowl and nodded once.

"Good."

She turned away before he could respond.

But not before he caught the brief flash of pride in her eyes.

The Outer Court disciples stopped mocking him after the second week.

It wasn't that they had suddenly grown to like him.

They simply no longer knew what to make of him.

The kitchen boy who had spent three years being treated like trash was now a cultivator whose cooking could break bottlenecks. He walked through the Outer Court each morning to collect ingredients from the sect's stores, and disciples who had once laughed at him now stepped aside.

Some watched him with curiosity.

Others with suspicion.

A few whispered whenever he passed.

Ren Kai ignored them.

He had spent three years wishing people would notice him. Now that they did, he found he had little interest in their opinions.

Liu Feng avoided him entirely.

Ren Kai saw him once, training alone in a distant corner of the grounds. His sword forms were sharper than before, and his Qi flowed with greater control.

The breakthrough had changed him.

Not just his cultivation. Something deeper.

The arrogance was still there.

But it was quieter now.

Uncertain.

For a moment, Ren Kai considered approaching him. There were questions he wanted to ask about the obstruction the system had detected, and perhaps Liu Feng had noticed something himself.

But Liu Feng was focused on his sword.

Ren Kai continued walking.

They didn't speak.

They didn't need to.

On the eighteenth day, Elder Yun summoned him to her pavilion.

A map lay across her table.

"It's time," she said.

Ren Kai stepped closer.

The map showed the region surrounding Azure Mist Sect, its mountains, rivers, and scattered settlements marked in faded ink. One city had been circled in red.

Maplewood City.

"Three days east of here," Elder Yun explained. "A trading hub with markets supplied by merchants from several regions. You'll find ingredients there that you won't see in the sect's stores."

"Why Maplewood?"

"Because its alchemist presence is relatively weak. You'll have room to establish yourself before the Guild takes too much interest."

Ren Kai studied the map.

"Establish myself?"

"You've learned what I can teach you. The rest you'll have to discover on your own." She tapped the marked city. "A cooking cultivator cannot grow by hiding in a kitchen forever. Books and theory will only take you so far. You need to cook for people. Real people, with real needs. Their reactions will teach you things no journal can."

He looked up.

"And the next level?"

"Spiritual Chef."

Elder Yun tapped the table.

"Your system calls it the first true Chef Rank. I call it the point where you stop being a curiosity..."

Her finger remained on the map.

"...and start becoming a threat."

Ren Kai understood what she meant.

"The Alchemist Guild?"

Her expression hardened.

"They will notice you. They notice anyone who threatens their control over cultivation resources. Pills are their business, and your food can achieve many of the same results. Sometimes better."

A chime sounded in his mind.

[Alchemist Guild Alert: Low-Level Surveillance Active]

Detected anomalies will be investigated.

Ren Kai stared at the notification.

"They're already watching?"

"Not necessarily you," Elder Yun replied. "The Guild monitors unusual spiritual activity throughout the region. A dish that produces an unexpected cultivation effect may attract attention. The more impressive your cooking becomes, the harder it will be to remain unnoticed."

"Then I'll give them competition."

For a moment, Elder Yun said nothing.

Then she smiled.

There was warmth in it, but also something sad.

"You sound like the old ones."

"The Ancient Chefs?"

"The ones who believed they could change the world with a good meal."

She folded the map and pressed it into his hands.

"Perhaps you can. But be careful. The Guild doesn't play fair, and I won't be there to protect you."

Ren Kai accepted the map.

"I'll remember."

"See that you do."

On the morning of his departure, Ren Kai woke before the sect bell.

He packed his few belongings: a change of robes, his cooking knife, the leather-bound journal, and a small pouch of preserved spices.

There wasn't much else to take.

He walked through the Outer Court one last time.

The kitchens were empty at this hour.

He stood in the doorway for a long moment, looking at the stove where he had spent three years scrubbing pots, enduring insults, and wondering whether his life would ever amount to anything.

The oven that had cracked open to reveal the ancient tablet had since been repaired. Its surface was clean, its bricks replaced, and the kitchen looked almost exactly as it had before.

Almost.

Ren Kai could still see the faint seam where the light had once poured through.

He touched the jade token resting against his chest.

It was warm beneath his robes.

For three years, this kitchen had been a place where he was sent because nobody wanted him anywhere else.

Now, it was the place where his life had begun.

He took one final look at the stove.

Then he left.

He didn't look back.

Because if he did, he might stay.

At the sect gates, Elder Yun was waiting.

The morning light fell across her simple robes. Her hair was unbound, and she looked older than Ren Kai remembered. Perhaps the weeks of teaching had cost her more than she let on.

In her hands was a small wooden box.

"For the road," she said.

Ren Kai accepted it and opened the lid.

Inside lay a dozen Fire-Aspected Chili seeds, a small vial of honey from the sect's spirit bees, and a folded piece of paper.

He unfolded it carefully.

A single recipe had been written in elegant script.

Nourishing Traveler's Porridge.

"To keep your strength up," Elder Yun said. "And to remind you that the simplest dishes are often the most important."

Ren Kai closed the box.

Then he bowed.

Not the shallow bow of a disciple greeting an elder, but a deep, sincere bow from a student to the person who had given him a future.

"Thank you," he said. "For everything."

Elder Yun waved a hand.

"Don't thank me. Just cook."

Her voice grew quieter.

"And when you find what you're looking for..."

She paused.

"Come back. Tell me what you learned."

"I will."

Ren Kai turned to leave.

"Ren Kai."

He stopped.

Elder Yun reached into her sleeve and produced a second jade token. This one pulsed with a faint, steady light. Even from several steps away, he could feel its warmth.

"This is the key to the Wok of a Hundred Flavors."

Ren Kai looked at it.

"The wok in your pavilion?"

"The same one. When you're strong enough—when you've reached Spiritual Chef and proven your Dao—it will open to you."

She placed the token in his palm.

"Until then, it will serve another purpose. The Alchemist Guild has methods for detecting Chef Bloodlines. This token will conceal your presence from their searches."

Ren Kai closed his fingers around it.

"But if it ever grows cold," she continued, "you must run."

He looked at her.

"Run?"

"Don't investigate. Don't challenge anyone. Don't try to prove how clever you are."

Her gaze held his.

"Run."

Ren Kai nodded.

"I understand."

He slipped the token safely away.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he bowed once more.

And walked down the mountain.

At the base of the mountain, the system chimed.

[ARC MISSION: STREET STALL LEGEND]

Objective: Establish a reputation as a cooking cultivator.

Primary Goal: Reach Chef Rank — Spiritual Chef.

Reward: New Cooking Technique + Unique Cultivation Breakthrough Pill.

[First Step: Find a City]

Recommended Location: Maplewood City.

Estimated Travel Time: 3 Days.

Description: A medium-sized city known for its trading routes and diverse ingredients.

Additional Information:

Low alchemist presence.

High demand for cultivation resources.

Ren Kai studied the notification.

A street stall.

He had spent years cooking for people who considered him worthless. Now he was supposed to build a reputation through the very thing they had mocked him for.

He found the thought strangely satisfying.

He looked east, where the morning sun painted the hills gold.

He thought of the rice that had changed his life.

The fire in his chest.

The old woman who had trusted him.

And Liu Feng's face when the breakthrough came.

The awe.

The confusion.

The hunger.

"Maplewood City," he said to the empty road. "Let's see what you're hiding."

Then he started walking.

The road wound through forests and open fields, past small villages where farmers paused their work to watch the robed cultivator pass.

Ren Kai kept mostly to himself.

At night, he built small fires beside the road and prepared Nourishing Traveler's Porridge. The recipe was simple, but the combination of preserved grains, spices, and spirit-bee honey produced a warm, nourishing meal.

He practiced his techniques by firelight, experimenting with the amount of Qi he infused into each serving.

The system offered occasional feedback.

Sometimes he improved a dish.

Sometimes he ruined it.

He was beginning to understand that the difference between a good meal and a remarkable one was rarely a matter of how much spiritual energy he could force into it.

It was how well he understood what he was cooking.

By the second night, the ninth layer of Body Tempering had settled fully into his bones. His body felt ready for the next stage, but beyond the familiar circulation of Qi, he sensed a barrier waiting.

The threshold to Qi Gathering.

He couldn't cross it through strength alone.

The system had suggested a possible recipe.

[Recipe Recommendation: Spirit Gathering Soup]

Status: Not Unlocked.

Description: A spiritual dish capable of assisting cultivators in breaking through the Body Tempering bottleneck.

Ren Kai read the notification twice.

"Of course," he muttered. "The one recipe I need is the one I don't have."

The system offered no response.

He sighed, packed away his cooking utensils, and continued east.

On the third morning, he crested a hill.

And stopped.

Maplewood City spread out below him.

It was unlike anything he had seen at Azure Mist Sect.

The city walls were built from gray stone, weathered smooth by centuries of wind and rain. Beyond them rose towers and spires in a dozen different styles. Some belonged to wealthy merchant families; others were the residences of cultivation clans and local powers.

Smoke curled from hundreds of chimneys.

Even from the hilltop, he could hear the distant roar of the markets.

Merchants shouting over one another.

Animals lowing.

Carts rattling across cobblestones.

The city gates stood open, and people streamed in and out beneath their watchful guards.

Cultivators in fine robes walked alongside merchants carrying heavy packs. Farmers pushed carts piled with vegetables, while children darted between adults, laughing as they chased one another through the crowd.

And the smells—

Ren Kai drew a slow breath.

Spices.

Cooking oil.

Roasted meat.

Fresh bread.

Something sweet, warm, and unfamiliar drifted up from the city.

His stomach rumbled.

The system pulsed faintly in his chest.

Hungry.

Ren Kai touched the jade token beneath his robes.

Still warm.

He looked down at the city again.

Somewhere inside those walls were ingredients he had never seen, people he had never met, and problems he had never imagined solving with food.

He adjusted the strap of his pack.

Then stepped toward the gates.

Maplewood City swallowed him whole.

And for the first time in his life, Ren Kai was exactly where he wanted to be.
