Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Commander Who Walks the Battlefield

The demon army didn't advance that morning. The vast black tide spread out beyond Ashenfall's walls simply remained still, and the silence that came with it sat heavier across the battlements than any of the previous fighting had managed to.

Something had changed overnight, and no one on the wall could quite name what yet.

At the center of the demon army, eight thousand generals waited in disciplined formation along the command ridge, the endless mass of soldiers and corrupted beasts stretching out below them without a single unit moving out of place. Every eye among them stayed fixed on one point.

The black carriage. It had remained sealed for days, a symbol of command that no one had dared approach directly.

Then its door opened, slowly, dark mist spilling out across the ground like smoke flowing over water. A tall figure stepped out from within — armor black as obsidian, a long cloak dragging through the dust behind him, two curved horns rising from his temples like blades carved out of the night itself. His eyes burned cold violet.

Demon Commander Var'Khal had finally entered the battlefield in person.

Every demon within sight knelt immediately, thousands of heads lowering at once. Even the generals bowed deeply, because this wasn't merely a commander directing a siege from a distance.

This was one of the Abyss Generals of the Demon Empire, a being who'd survived three full Demon Century Wars before this one had even begun.

He walked slowly across the ridge without raising his voice, and still the entire army felt his presence settle over them like standing beneath a mountain that had decided to start collapsing.

One general spoke up carefully. "Commander. Phase two infiltration failed."

Var'Khal's expression didn't change. "The objective was never assassination."

The general hesitated. "Then what was it?"

"Observation."

He looked toward the distant walls of Ashenfall, small and fragile-looking from this distance despite having held against two full waves already. Something interesting existed inside it regardless of how modest it looked from here.

"Dragon Vessel," he murmured, his mouth curving slightly. "Unexpected."

On the southern wall, Lin Tianren stood beside Han Yueqing, the air between them carrying a strangeness neither could immediately place. The battlefield felt different this morning, heavier in a way that had nothing to do with weather.

Han narrowed his eyes at the horizon. "They're moving."

Lin Tianren followed his gaze across the plains. A single figure was walking toward the city, not riding, not surrounded by an honor guard. Walking alone, and even from miles away, the pressure radiating off him reached the wall clearly enough to matter.

Han's hand tightened slowly around his sword. "That's not a normal commander," he said quietly, exhaling.

As Var'Khal walked forward, the demon army parted before him like a tide splitting around a stone, no soldiers approaching, no generals following behind. This wasn't a charge building toward anything.

It was a statement, each step deliberate and unhurried, tens of thousands of demons watching in complete silence behind him.

At the highest tower of the Beast Queen Sect, a silver figure stepped forward to meet the sight from a distance. The Beast Queen's eyes stayed cold, her expression giving nothing away as she studied the approaching commander across miles of battlefield.

Their gazes met, and for several long seconds, neither of them moved — two commanders measuring each other across a distance that made the exercise almost formal.

"He finally came himself," she said quietly.

Behind her, the gathered elders murmured among themselves. "That aura," one of them said nervously. "He might be a Half-Step Demon Lord."

"If he's personally entering the battlefield," another added, "the war escalates from here."

Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Yes. That's exactly what he intends by doing it this way."

Var'Khal stopped when he reached the halfway point between the two armies, still far from the wall itself but close enough that powerful cultivators could hear him clearly regardless of the distance. He looked up at Ashenfall for a long moment before speaking, his voice calm but carrying easily across the entire battlefield.

"Humans," he said, no anger in the word, no hatred behind it, only a quiet, settled authority. "You've resisted well."

The demon army stayed silent behind him. The human side offered no response either, uncertain how to answer something that sounded almost like genuine acknowledgment.

"This city has already survived two waves," he continued. "Few manage that."

On the wall, soldiers exchanged uneasy glances. Was he actually praising them? Then his eyes moved, searching deliberately across the battlements until they landed on one person specifically.

Lin Tianren felt the gaze land even from this distance, the specific, unmistakable weight of being locked under a predator's full attention.

"Dragon Vessel," Var'Khal said, and the entire battlefield went quiet at the words. Most people present didn't understand the significance of them.

Lin Tianren did. The Beast Queen did. Han Yueqing did, judging by how still he'd gone beside him.

The demon commander's mouth curved into something almost approving. "So you survived the infiltration attempt."

The sky darkened slightly, not from clouds gathering but from aura pressing down across the entire field. Var'Khal released only a fraction of his actual cultivation, and still the pressure rolled outward like a physical tide.

Weaker soldiers on the wall nearly buckled to their knees. Even seasoned cultivators struggled to keep their breathing steady under the weight of it.

Han whispered through gritted teeth. "Gold Rank?"

"No," the Beast Queen answered from behind them, calm despite everything. "Higher."

For the first time since the war had reached Ashenfall's walls, real fear spread visibly through the defenders standing along them.

Var'Khal looked across the city once more before delivering his final words.

"Prepare yourselves," he said. "Because the third wave begins tomorrow."

Behind him, the demon drums finally sounded — one strike, then another, the massive army beginning to move again, slow and disciplined and seemingly endless in its scale. He turned away from the city, walking back toward the demon ranks, but paused once more before disappearing fully into the formation.

He glanced back, directly at Lin Tianren. A silent promise, unmistakable even across the distance separating them.

The silence after he finally withdrew sat heavier across the wall than the battle itself had managed to.

"That monster," Han finally said, not quite finishing the thought.

"He wasn't here to attack," Lin Tianren said, his eyes steady despite everything that had just happened.

The Beast Queen nodded. "He came to look. To measure us properly, in person, rather than through scouts and infiltrators."

Lin Tianren studied the distant plains where the demon army was already reorganizing itself into new formation. "They're confident."

"They have reason to be," she answered quietly.

[Time Remaining — Primary Clock: 2 Days]

In the distance, the war drums continued, slow and rhythmic, like something enormous settling into a heartbeat that had already decided how this was going to end.
