Chapter 46 - Chapter 46: Sovereign Dragon Unleashed — The Fall of Var’Khal

The battlefield quaked as though the earth itself feared what was coming. Ashenfall, already scarred and smoking from the night's earlier clashes, now faced something considerably beyond anything it had survived so far. Rivers of molten stone flowed from collapsed structures. Blackened trees uprooted and hurled skyward under stray pressure. Scorched earth mixed with the metallic tang of demon blood thick enough to taste in the air.

At the center of it, Lin Tianren stood with his golden aura blazing, sovereign dragon energy coiling around him like a living storm. The fox hovered beside him, tails whipping arcs of golden-silver fire that distorted the field around them. The Beast Queen descended nearby, wings flared, ready to strike in any direction the fight demanded.

Above it all, Var'Khal raised both hands, crimson and black light spiraling around him as his authority reached full manifestation.

"Human," he said, his voice rolling across the field like a boulder down a cliff. "You survive too much. Today, the Emperor himself will witness your end."

He didn't come alone this time. Six figures descended behind him, elite demon commanders answering a summons he'd apparently held in reserve for exactly this moment.

Ironmaw, Silver Rank, jaws capable of crushing armor whole. Shadowfang, Silver Rank as well, built for stealth assassination rather than open combat. Oblivion, Gold Rank, gravity bent to his direct will. Bloodclaw, Gold Rank, raw berserker strength with nothing tactical layered underneath it. And past those four, two considerably more dangerous figures — Venomspire and Darkhowl, both sitting at a tier the sect's own records classified as peak Gold Rank, bordering the threshold into Earth Sovereign authority. One carried poison dense enough to corrode spirit itself. The other specialized in something the elders simply called soul rend.

"You won't face me alone tonight," Var'Khal said, something almost satisfied in the observation.

The battlefield split apart under the weight of six additional fronts opening at once. Zhao Lianhua met Venomspire directly, her Royal Flame Domain expanding to burn through the spreading poison before it could reach the soldiers still fighting nearby.

"You picked the wrong princess to poison," she said, flame condensing into a spear aimed straight through the toxin cloud.

Venomspire laughed, mist thickening around him in response. "Royal blood burns bright. It also burns out fast."

She didn't answer with words. The Proud Flame's First Descent tore through his mist entirely, forcing him back several hundred meters before he could stabilize his own defense.

Han Yueqing found Shadowfang the moment it tried to vanish into the chaos, his wind-law sense tracking the demon's suppressed footprint even through the assassin's best attempt at concealment.

"Hiding won't help," he said, blade already moving before Shadowfang finished materializing behind a collapsed wall. "I've killed things faster than you."

The exchange lasted less than a minute. Shadowfang's speed meant nothing against a swordsman who'd spent years cultivating the specific discipline of a sword that reached before death did. It fell in two clean strikes, the same economy of motion that had ended a Half-Gold general on the northern ridge weeks earlier.

The Beast Queen intercepted Ironmaw and Bloodclaw together, her wings cutting through the space between them faster than either demon's raw strength could track properly. Ironmaw's crushing jaws closed on empty air twice before she drove a concentrated pulse directly into the joint of its skull. Bloodclaw's berserker charge found nothing but afterimage, her spiritual threads redirecting his own momentum into a collision with the ruined street beneath him.

"Strength without direction," she said calmly, watching him struggle to rise, "is just another kind of weakness."

That left Oblivion and Darkhowl converging on Lin Tianren directly, alongside Var'Khal himself, three threats pressing at once while the fox held the fourth flank, illusion flame keeping the wider demon army from closing in around the edges of the fight.

Oblivion's gravity manipulation bent the ground beneath Lin Tianren's feet into a pit that shouldn't have existed a second earlier. He stepped through it rather than around it, sovereign field compressing the distortion back into something manageable before it could fully close.

Darkhowl's soul rend technique reached for something considerably harder to defend against than physical force — a direct attempt at unraveling the resonance between him and the fox. He felt it catch briefly, a cold, hollow pull against the bond that had carried him through everything since the Beast Field trial weeks ago.

The fox answered before he needed to, a sharp burst of sovereign resonance driving the intrusion back out with enough force that Darkhowl staggered visibly.

"Not that bond," Lin Tianren said. "Not tonight."

Var'Khal moved in the same instant, his ultimate technique finally manifesting fully — a towering orb of concentrated authority hovering above his head, distorting the air and warping gravity across the entire ruined street. Rubble floated free of the ground around it. Soldiers still watching from a safer distance froze, understanding instinctively that any misstep near that orb would be catastrophic.

Lin Tianren compressed his sovereign field to its overclocked limit, time slowing within the boundary, every reaction amplified past what his body should have naturally allowed. He drove a single needle-focused strike directly into the orb's center, the resulting clash sending shockwaves hundreds of meters outward, buildings cracking under the force of it.

The strike found the same destabilization point he'd already opened twice tonight, and this time it didn't just crack. It held, golden light spreading through the fracture faster than Var'Khal could reinforce it.

For the first time since descending onto this battlefield, Var'Khal's authority visibly buckled rather than merely wavering.

"Impossible," he said, the word carrying something close to genuine disbelief rather than simple anger. Around him, his remaining generals fell back one by one — Oblivion's gravity field collapsing under its own weight, Darkhowl retreating from the fox's sharpened resonance, Bloodclaw still struggling to rise from the Beast Queen's redirect.

The demon army's morale cracked visibly across the wider field, command structure fracturing as six named commanders either fell or retreated within minutes of each other.

Lin Tianren didn't press the advantage recklessly. He held his ground instead, dragon aura steady despite everything the fight had already cost him, watching Var'Khal recalculate in real time.

"You called six generals," he said. "I'd guess that means you didn't expect to need them alone."

Var'Khal's expression didn't answer directly. He straightened instead, crimson light still gathering around him despite the crack Lin Tianren had opened in his authority, clearly unwilling to concede the fight was actually over yet.

[Warning: Demon King — Authority Recompensating]

"You've won a single exchange," Var'Khal said. "Not the war behind it."

Lin Tianren's Dragon Heart Core pulsed steady in response, the fox settling beside him again after driving off Darkhowl's retreat, the Beast Queen's wings still flared on the far side of the field where Bloodclaw and Ironmaw had finally stopped moving entirely.

"Then let's find out," he said, "how much of it you actually have left to spend."

The sky above the ruined street churned gold and crimson together, both sides bracing for whatever came next.
