Chapter 85 - Chapter 85 — The First Trial

The next seven days passed faster than Lin Tianren expected. By the time he looked up from his cultivation room again, only two days remained before the Azure Dragon Immortal Sect's Outer Disciple Tournament officially began.

[Tournament Countdown: 2 Days Remaining]

The sect's entire atmosphere had shifted around him without his fully noticing the transition happen. No one discussed ordinary missions anymore. Every outer disciple he passed carried themselves with the same focused urgency he'd felt building in his own chest for days now.

Sect representatives moved through the outer courtyards that afternoon, distributing small metallic pendants to each registered participant — not ordinary tokens, he understood immediately, studying the faint spiritual energy radiating continuously off the one settled into his own palm. A number sat engraved across its surface.

150

He stared at it for several seconds. "One hundred and fifty?"

His eyes swept the gathering crowd, recalculating something that hadn't quite added up. "I've only seen maybe forty outer disciples total since I arrived here. Where did the rest come from?"

System. Where are the other participants coming from?

[Question Recognized][Current Outer Disciple Population Encountered By Host Does Not Represent the Total Number of Tournament Participants]

Then where did they come from?

[Some Are Permanent Cultivators of This Realm]

He turned the term over. "Permanent cultivators?"

The system offered its explanation in the same measured, unhurried pace it always fell into when delivering something foundational.

[Every Cultivator Has a Natural Limit][A Cultivator Can Continue Advancing Only Until That Limit Is Reached][When a Cultivator Repeatedly Fails to Break Through to the Next Realm, Advancement May Eventually Become Impossible]

[At That Point, the Cultivator Has Two Choices][Continue Attempting to Break Through][Or Establish a Permanent Settlement Within the Current Realm]

"So they don't fall back down," he said slowly, "but they can't climb higher either."

[Correct][They Remain Within Their Current Realm for Extremely Long Periods of Time][Such Cultivators Are Commonly Referred to as Permanent Cultivators of Their Realm]

"But why stay here permanently?" he asked, genuinely curious now. "Why not simply settle somewhere lower, where the ceiling wouldn't matter as much?"

[Because Remaining Within Their Current Realm Is Often Preferable to Losing Everything They Have Already Built]

[They Can Continue Cultivating Within Their Limits][They Can Establish Families][They Can Accumulate Resources][They Can Build Influence][They Can Become Experienced Experts Within Their Realm]

He understood the shape of it slowly. A cultivator who couldn't climb higher didn't necessarily become irrelevant. They could become considerably more dangerous within the boundaries they were actually trapped inside, decades of accumulated experience compensating for whatever ceiling had stopped their raw advancement.

He looked at the pendant again. "So some of these hundred and fifty could have been cultivating at this exact level for decades."

[Possible]

"Or longer?"

[Possible]

He grew serious, weighing the implication properly now. "Only two days remain. Do you think I can make the top twenty?"

Another question followed immediately, before the system could answer the first. "And these permanent cultivators — how strong are they actually?"

The system didn't offer him the comforting prediction instinct wanted.

[Insufficient Data][Permanent Cultivators Possess One Significant Advantage][They Were Born and Raised Within This Realm]

[Their Understanding of Spiritual Energy Is Likely Superior][Their Ability to Sense Spiritual Fluctuations Is Likely Superior][Their Familiarity With Local Resources and Artifacts Is Likely Superior][Their Experience Within Their Current Realm May Also Exceed Yours]

He absorbed the list quietly.

[Whether That Advantage Is Sufficient to Place Them Above You Cannot Be Determined From Current Data][The Tournament Will Provide the Answer]

No artificial reassurance, and no artificial dismissal either. He appreciated the honesty more than he would have appreciated false comfort.

The final two days passed without incident, filled with the same disciplined routine he'd maintained since the preparation period began. He refined pills. Cultivated. Studied. Rested when rest was actually necessary rather than simply available. The three spiritual entities still bound to him continued drawing steadily on his spiritual energy, forcing him to hold a careful balance between his own advancement and their ongoing needs.

He attempted no reckless breakthrough in those final hours. He simply finished preparing, the same way he'd approached everything since Moonfall taught him the cost of moving faster than his own foundation could support.

[Tournament Countdown: 0 Days Remaining]

BOOOOOOM.

A massive sound wave rolled across the entire sect, every mountain peak vibrating under the force of it. Not an attack — a sect-wide announcement formation, activated at full strength for the first time since he'd arrived here.

Every outer disciple across every training ground looked up at once.

The tournament had officially begun.

The hundred and fifty participants gathered slowly into an enormous ancient hall, its walls carved with pillars considerably older than anything in the outer courtyards, massive spiritual arrays humming faintly along the ceiling's full length. Everyone arranged themselves according to their pendant's number, one through a hundred fifty stretching in loose formation across the hall's floor.

Lin Tianren found his place near the back of the gathering, and a familiar face caught his attention shortly after — Gu Chen, pendant marked with 123, and beside him, Xia Qing at 130.

He allowed himself a small smile. "Looks like we all made it this far."

"Apparently," Gu Chen said, something dry and relieved threading through the single word.

The hall fell completely silent as a voice settled over it from somewhere above, carrying without apparent effort across every corner of the gathered crowd.

"Today, your tournament begins."

Lin Tianren looked up, and for the first time since arriving at this sect, saw its master clearly. White hair, a full mustache, robes cut in deep blue layered with purple. The man's presence sat restrained despite everything Lin Tianren could feel radiating quietly beneath it.

He tried, instinctively, to read the full depth of that cultivation.

For a single, brief moment, something enormous brushed against his perception.

Then it withdrew entirely, folded back beneath whatever restraint the Sect Master maintained as a matter of course.

"You already know the reward," the Sect Master continued. "Those who reach the top twenty become inner disciples. Your cultivation path changes. Your access to resources changes. Opportunities currently beyond your reach will finally open."

A pause settled over the hall.

"But first, you must survive."

"This tournament consists of four stages," he said. "The first stage will last one month. During that month, you will enter a designated mountain region. You will gather spiritual herbs. You will refine them into a pill. The type, quality, and level of that pill is your own choice to make."

Sect attendants moved through the hall distributing a small golden container to each participant, and Lin Tianren studied the vessel carefully once it settled into his own hands — considerably more sophisticated than an ordinary storage bag, tamper-proof and precisely designed for exactly the purpose the Sect Master had just described.

[Golden Spirit Vessel]

"This vessel remains with you for the entire month," the Sect Master said. "Use it to preserve whatever you gather, and whatever you ultimately refine."

He paused before continuing, and something in the pause made the entire hall go still in anticipation.

"There is one more rule," he said. "You may attack one another."

Silence answered the declaration.

"You may steal another participant's gathered herbs." Another pause. "You may steal their completed pill."

Lin Tianren understood the true shape of this tournament settling into place all at once. This wasn't an alchemy examination dressed up with a competitive framing.

"At the end of one month," the Sect Master continued, "bring your completed pill before the judging formation. Your score will be determined by pill grade, pill quality, pill type and difficulty, and the spiritual energy contained within it."

So this isn't really about refining pills at all, Lin Tianren thought, studying the gathered crowd with newly sharpened attention. One hundred fifty participants, a full month, limited resources, and open permission to take by force whatever anyone else had managed to build.

It's a survival competition wearing an alchemy competition's face.

He understood the actual scenario clearly now. Someone would eventually find an exceptional herb, refine something genuinely impressive from it, and become a target the moment word of that success spread. They'd be attacked alone, or several competitors might cooperate temporarily just long enough to take what they wanted. And whoever succeeded at stealing it would become the next target in turn, the entire month cycling through exactly that pattern over and over.

Everyone here is both hunter and prey simultaneously. That understanding settled as the central truth of everything about to happen.

The Sect Master delivered the final rule without softening it at all.

"When you enter the mountain region, you carry nothing from outside it. No food. No prepared clothing. No personal artifacts. No stored pills. No external weapons."

The hall stirred restlessly at the scope of the restriction.

"Everything you require must be obtained inside," he said. "You will rely on your own knowledge. Your own cultivation. Your own judgment. And your ability to actually survive what you find there."

BOOOOOOM.

The ancient formation beneath all hundred fifty participants activated at once, golden light spreading rapidly across the hall's entire floor. The massive doors at the hall's far end swung open, revealing not another ordinary courtyard beyond them, but an enormous spatial passage stretching toward the designated mountain region.

"The first stage begins now," the Sect Master's voice echoed, final and absolute.

Lin Tianren tightened the golden vessel at his waist, glancing once toward Gu Chen and Xia Qing before turning his full attention toward the massive gate ahead.

He took a single step forward.

One month. No food. No personal artifacts. No prepared resources. And a hundred and forty-nine other participants, every one of them capable of becoming either an ally or a threat depending on nothing but circumstance.

His eyes narrowed as the spatial passage's light swallowed him fully.

Let's see, he thought, who becomes the hunter, and who becomes the prey.
