Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — When Fear Woke the City

The night rain had stopped, but the streets still glistened like broken mirrors beneath the flickering glow of streetlights. The city seemed quiet, too quiet, as if it were holding its breath.

Kai stood inside the dimly lit bathroom of his apartment, staring at his reflection.

His hair was longer than he remembered.

Not just longer wilder. Dark strands fell messily across his eyes, hiding the sharpness in his gaze. The boy in the mirror looked like someone who had survived something he shouldn't have.

Something inside him whispered that the old version of himself no longer existed.

Slowly, he reached for the scissors resting beside the sink.

The sound of metal scraping softly echoed in the small space.

Snip.

A thick lock of hair fell into the sink.

Snip.

Another.

With each cut, Kai felt lighter as if he were shedding pieces of his former fear, his former weakness. He trimmed his hair shorter, cleaner, sharper. Not military neat, but controlled. Intentional.

When he finally stopped, his reflection showed someone different.

Stronger.

Focused.

Dangerous.

Kai rinsed his face, gripping the edge of the sink. The memories from earlier still burned inside his mind the screams, the blood, the impossible creature crawling through shattered glass.

This city isn't safe anymore.

And deep down, he knew…

Neither was he.

The Calm Before Collapse

Morning arrived with uneasy stillness.

The streets filled slowly. Cars hummed. Vendors reopened their stalls. Students drifted toward schools. Life tried to return to normal, pretending nothing had happened.

But something felt wrong.

People whispered.

Rumors spread.

A strange incident at Mercy General Hospital. Patients missing. Security cameras malfunctioning. Doctors refusing to talk.

Kai pulled his hood up as he walked, his eyes scanning every reflection, every shadow. His senses felt sharper sounds clearer, movements slower, details brighter.

When did this start? he wondered.

Then he heard it.

A distant scream.

Not one — many.

The sound rolled across the city like thunder.

Kai froze.

Sirens followed seconds later.

Then the shouting.

Then the stampede.

The Hospital Panic

Mercy General Hospital erupted into chaos.

Patients spilled from the entrance, some barefoot, some still wearing hospital gowns streaked with blood. Nurses screamed orders that no one followed. Security guards waved people back while terror flooded their eyes.

"RUN!"

"GET OUT!"

"IT'S COMING!"

The sliding doors burst open as a wave of people surged into the street.

Kai stood across the road, frozen.

A man stumbled past him, clutching his bleeding arm. A child sobbed in her mother's arms. A wheelchair overturned, sending an elderly patient crashing onto the pavement.

Something monstrous roared from inside the building.

The sound shook the windows.

Kai felt it in his bones.

His heart slammed against his chest.

Every instinct screamed at him to run.

Instead, he stepped forward.

Inside the Nightmare

Smoke drifted through shattered hallways. Emergency lights flickered red and white, painting the walls like a warning signal. The hospital smelled of antiseptic, blood, and burning wiring.

Kai moved cautiously, every footstep silent.

Then he saw it.

The monster stood at the end of the hallway.

It was enormous over nine feet tall, its body twisted and uneven, like several creatures fused together. Black veins pulsed beneath grayish skin. Its claws scraped against the tiled floor, leaving deep grooves.

Rows of jagged teeth glistened inside a mouth far too wide.

Its eyes burned crimson.

A corpse lay broken at its feet.

Kai swallowed hard.

Fear threatened to paralyze him but something else stirred within his chest.

Power.

Heat.

Control.

The strange energy surged through his veins, coiling tightly, waiting.

The monster sniffed the air.

Its head snapped toward Kai.

And it charged.

The First Clash

The ground cracked beneath its weight.

Kai dove aside just as claws smashed into the wall where his head had been. Concrete exploded. Dust filled the air.

Before he could recover, the creature swung again.

Pain exploded across Kai's ribs as he was thrown into a hospital bed. Metal screeched as the frame twisted.

His lungs burned.

Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

But he stood.

Energy erupted from his body, sending ripples through the air. The hospital lights flickered violently.

The monster hesitated.

Kai raised his hand.

The air condensed.

Then

BOOM.

A compressed shockwave slammed into the creature, blasting it through two walls. The building trembled.

Kai stared at his own palm, stunned.

I did that?

No time to think.

The monster roared and burst back through the debris, blood dripping from its shattered chest yet it kept moving.

Faster.

Angrier.

Running Through Hell

Kai sprinted.

The creature crashed after him, tearing through corridors, smashing doors, shattering glass. Ceiling panels collapsed. Fire alarms screamed.

They burst into the emergency wing.

Doctors and nurses scattered.

Kai spun, thrusting his hands forward.

A wave of energy hurled medical equipment into the monster — beds, carts, oxygen tanks — smashing into its body with brutal force.

It stumbled.

But didn't fall.

It grabbed an oxygen tank and hurled it back.

Kai barely dodged. The tank exploded against the wall, sending shrapnel flying.

Flames erupted.

Smoke filled the room.

People screamed.

Something inside Kai snapped.

No more running.

Awakening

Kai closed his eyes.

The noise faded.

The fear dimmed.

The world slowed.

Deep inside, a locked door opened.

Energy flooded his body wild, roaring, burning like liquid lightning.

When he opened his eyes, they glowed faint silver.

The floor cracked beneath his feet.

The monster lunged.

Kai vanished.

In a blink, he reappeared behind it.

His fist drove forward.

The impact sounded like thunder.

The creature flew through multiple walls, crashing into the hospital's outer structure. The entire wing shook violently.

Kai appeared again, relentless.

Punch.

Kick.

Elbow.

Every blow carried explosive force.

The monster howled, trying to retaliate, but Kai's speed overwhelmed it.

With one final surge, Kai grabbed the creature's skull.

Energy roared around his arm.

"End."

He slammed its head into the ground.

The impact created a crater.

The monster convulsed violently, its body cracking apart, veins glowing brighter before shattering like glass.

With a final scream, it dissolved into black mist.

Silence followed.

Only the crackling of fire and distant sirens remained.

Kai stood alone in the ruins.

Chest heaving.

Hands trembling.

Blood dripping from his knuckles.

Aftermath

Outside, police, soldiers, and emergency responders flooded the area.

People stared at the smoking hospital wing in shock.

No one knew what had happened.

No one saw Kai slip away into the shadows.

By the time authorities entered the destroyed wing, the monster was gone.

Only devastation remained.

And a single cracked footprint embedded deep into concrete.

A New Reality

Kai stood atop a distant rooftop, staring at the rising smoke.

His heart pounded.

His body still vibrated with leftover energy.

Below him, the city trembled in fear.

And for the first time, he understood the truth.

Monsters were real.

And so was he.

But unlike them

He would not lose control.

Yet somewhere in the darkness, unseen eyes watched him.

And something ancient stirred.
