Arthur discovered a bundle of letters tied with a faded blue ribbon. They told the story of Jennet Humfrye, Alice Drablow's sister. Jennet had a child out of wedlock, a boy who was taken from her and raised by Alice. One afternoon, the boy's pony and trap lost its way in the fog on the causeway. Jennet watched from the window as her son was swallowed by the quicksand. She died of a broken heart, vowing never to forgive. Now, whenever she appeared, a child in the village would die.
