Chapter 8 - Truth

"You're seriously not gonna talk about what happened this morning ?"

"What happened this morning?"

"The thing between you and your brother that left you absolutely shattered"

"I wasn't shattered, I was just annoyed"

"Then tell me why"

"No! Ares, the answer is no" Ben says, raising his voice. "Look, whatever you think happened here is not as serious as it seems. Did we fight? yeah, but was it that heated?; Not really. So please, can you stop hovering so we can finish this?"

"Alright" Ares says, lifting his arms in surrender while moving his seat away from Ben.

Ben finally puts down the book which he used to block Ares's prying eyes.

"Back to what we were saying before a very curious cat interrupted. Based on what we know, both the Murphy family and my family's ancestors received their abilities on the night of blessings. Do you know what the night of blessings is?"

Ares is taken aback by Ben's question. "Of course I know what it is. The night of blessing is the period of humanity's evolution approximately two centuries ago, where a selected group of people were chosen and blessed with abilities which they passed on to the generations after them. You are looking down on me young man"

"My apologies Sire!" Ben continues. "So that means Jane should already have her powers awakened by now. Or maybe she doesn't!"

"I'm sure she does, Ben." Ares says while tapping Ben's shoulder. "Not every one has got massive bad luck like you!"

"Well, the joke's on you Ares; I'm sure the ancestors have got better things in store for me."

"Yeah, I'm sure they do, they're probably waiting for you to die so you can become the family's Grim Reaper" Ares says as he laughs loudly.

"you're just blind to my greatness"

.....

"Why are we even doing this anyway?"Ares, struggling to quit laughing, asks.

"doing what?"

"I dunno, this whole power study or whatever"

"Well, I'm just to figure out what her ability is and have an Idea what her next move might based on that"

"Oh, the ol' detective work, ey!"

"Yup"

Ares, with his elbow on the table and his face leaning on his palm, quietly looks at Ben who is neck deep in the book in front of him.

"how was it like being a police detective at Easton?"

"Do you want the headlines or the full story"

asked Ben with his face still fixed on the book in front of him.

"Oh, I know the headlines; Failed police detective with an unsuccessful career spanning over 8 years. You had a couple of solved cases and a truck load of unsolved ones"

Ben, who was not paying any attention at first, suddenly sits up, leans his back against the chair, folds his arms and watches, as Ares continues.

"You got into numerous fights with your superiors and colleagues due to the fact that you were impossible to work with and that your methods didn't comply with the force's guidelines.

You quit the force to start a career as a private detective but your career was short-lived probably because the opposition you had garnered at the Easton PD ensured your career met an abrupt end. With no other choice having lost all your credibility, you turned to a life of unemployment where you lived out the rest of your days eating cereal in a bathrobe"

Ben raises his brow in shock "Well, you seem to have gotten everything".

Ares Chuckles. "That's just the stuff in the papers"

"Including the part about the cereal and the robe?" Ben asks in shock.

"Yup, it's all in there"

"Damn!"

"But what I really want to know is how it felt like for you being a police detective"

Ben hesitates for a while and then answers.

"I don't know, I guess I thought I could do some good, help a few people, maybe make some friends along the way. But no matter how much I tried to fit in, I'd always feel different. I thought that if I tried harder, I'd get it right but eventually, I figured maybe normal life isn't for me and then I quit".

"I guess humans are just blind to your greatness," Ares says, looking at Ben.

Ben smiles at his hearty remark. "I guess they are"

"Alright, let's finish this" says Ares as he picks up a book.
