Chapter 4 - Retracing My Steps

A Week Went By As I Continued Working On My Nano Suit, I Successfully Developed It To The Point Where It Could Eject from a belt and cover my body from my stomach down, and it wasn't easy because nanotechnology wiring is complex, but I was proud of my progress. The day came for me to test it out as Kelvin was right there recording. Alright, astronaut nano suit prototype test one was initiated. I buckled the silver belt on my waist as I pushed the button activating it. It covered my stomach down and, despite being silver and not finished yet, the prototype design was looking good. I attempted standing up, holding my wheelchair firm as I pushed myself up. My feet shook inside the suit as I squeezed my toes and jolted up and, for the first time in a long time, I was standing. Kelvin was speechless as his eyes widened in surprise, mind blown by my invention. I could feel the sensation again. Oh God, how much I'd missed walking. He threw my leg forward and took a step. Kelvin looked at me still in shock. I attempted taking another step as sparks started erupting from the knees of the suit..... suddenly! The suit retracted back into the belt as I fell bracing myself with my elbows. Kelvin ran to my aid as he picked me up, putting me back in my wheelchair. I was smiling. This caught Kelvin off guard as he asked Dude what was funny. I responded; it worked! Yes, I have a lot to do and lots of wiring to do, but it freaking worked. I was overjoyed.

This Gave Me A Huge Motivation Boost As I Indulged More On The Nano Suit Prototype. I Was Making A Few Adjustments When Kelvin Called Something Shocking To My Attention. Right there on the TV was Mary Gregory. The Girl I funded Like A Week Ago. In just a few days, she made a huge breakthrough in the medical field, making prosthetics that perfectly match the human anatomy and are like a perfect replacement for human parts. I was so shocked but not as shocked when I saw the next slide that popped up. Right there on the screen was me. Kelvin looked at me shocked. Someone had leaked the information about me funding her research and, in contrast, it's giving me a lot of good press, as many people referred to me as an icon and hero. I went to my social media handles and saw a lot of new followers, big brands texting me and many podcast stations asking for an interview. I was gaining more traction than the entire body of the O.E.C. board and despite it being against my wishes, I felt phenomenal. Suddenly, my phone rang. The caller ID showed the name of someone I least expected: the board director, Mrs Winifred. Hello Mr Tega, she said calmly, Hello Mrs Winifred how may I help you? I asked vigorously Well, well, well, you were told to come up with an idea for the betterment of the company, and you chose to pull a publicity stunt like that. Do you know the damage it could cause to the company's reputation? I Grinned And Answered Sarcastically; I Don't See How Good Publicity Could Damage a company's reputation, Mrs Winifred. It seems to me you feel threatened. Are you scared? She laughed. I could hear her breathing increase on the other side of the phone, I See you got jokes (she answered angrily). Well, I got one for you too, Mr Tega. You have until one month to bring a breakthrough idea that'll boost the company. Failure to do this in time would result in you being voted off the board. Good day! She hung up the call as I smiled. Kelvin overheard the entire thing: Mr Funny, what do we do now? He asked with a stern frown on his face. I gave him a goofy look and responded: We are going to ride the Clout train to succeed.

I Zoom called Mary as she was so excited, thanking me continuously. I finally got her to stop them. I proceeded to ask her why she told the world I funded her research because I clearly remember telling her not to. Shockingly, she revealed that she did no such thing and was also surprised herself, but she reassured me that there's no such thing as bad publicity and whether I like it or not, I deserve credit for the amount of life I've helped save. She proceeded to enlighten me on an invention she's been working on and recently perfected. According to her, it was a chip that repairs damaged nerves while also increasing bodily functions. Tests on injured animals have been carried out and ended in success and what's left is to begin human trials. I looked blankly at the screen and told her the words that almost made Kelvin have a heart attack: Use Me.

After a ton of persuasion, Kelvin and I booked a flight to meet Mary, where we were welcomed by Mary and a ton of reporters. It was an impromptu press conference and I did my best to indulge them by answering as many questions as I could. After that, we drove around the beautiful streets of the city as I saw many amazing buildings and infrastructure that left me speechless. We finally made it to her lab and if the city was astonishing, her lab was futuristic, I couldn't hide my excitement as she introduced me to some doctors, and I was led into a scanning room. There it was revealed that I Didn't Really Undergo Any Severe Damage. And me not being able to walk is mainly psychological, but the chip was going to help my body regain its function perfectly, curating my equilibrium. I was ready and, of course, Kelvin was there all the way.

I was given some anesthetics to help prep me for the surgery. I dozed off as the doctors began operating on the back of my neck. It took four straight hours and notwithstanding they came through, the surgery was a success as the bio chip was installed perfectly. They informed me to give it time to heal as it needs to fuse perfectly with my spinal cord synchronizing with my body amidst the instructions currently being given to us by Mary. I looked down and was surprised, so where the others, my toes were moving. I could finally feel the sensation of having legs again. I burst into tears as Kelvin comforted me. This was the first time I've cried since the tragedy took place. I thanked Mary and her team so much, but like a boomerang, they returned the thanks almost immediately, stating that if it wasn't for my funding, none of this would've been possible.

I decided to spend the next couple of weeks in Mary's city as this would give the doctors full access to monitor my recovery process and how my body is reacting to the chip. I healed faster than anticipated, as in only a matter of days I could now walk with a walking stick and stand for hours too. I was more than happy, grateful and motivated still in the lab. I took an IQ test and realized my intelligence had risen significantly, and it was evident when I worked on the blueprint of my nano suit. I could figure out solutions faster and better and couldn't wait to get home to apply my new discoveries, but was this because of the chip? Was this a side effect, and would it come with any downsides? Well, I decided to hide the information and just focus on the good part. This may not be a good decision, but I have only one month to come up with a life-changing idea in order to keep my company and I most certainly can't afford to remain in Mary's lab undergoing more check-ups.

The day of our departure finally came as I bid Mary and the wonderful people of her beautiful hometown goodbye. We boarded my private jet and returned to our country in a grand style and, as expected, there was a press conference waiting for my arrival. I hadn't been on social media in a while because I couldn't handle all the drama. Kelvin, on the other hand, didn't seem surprised at all. We landed at the airport as tons of paparazzi stormed the jet and cameras went ballistic when they saw I was on my feet with a walking stick. My bodyguards alongside Kelvin helped guide me to the car waiting to take us back home as questions rained from left and right. A captivating question caught my attention when one of the news broadcasters asked: Mr Tega, you're shockingly on your feet again. What should we expect from you and the O.E.C. company from now till the near future? I smiled, taking off my glasses facing the paparazzi head on: Expect Nothing But The Best. I entered the car as it drove away. I was hellbent on changing my father's company for the best and nothing is going to stop that.
