Chapter 1 - Home: Ivan

"It's not like you'll survive!" I heard just as I woke up. Mom and dad are fighting again I think to myself. I throw off my covers and realize just how cold it is. I sit up and rub my eyes, looking at the blurry wall across from my bed. I stand onto the cold concrete floor and shuffle over to my clothes, which are hanging off a chair. I dress myself and head out to where mom and dad are fighting. The second I walk in; mom turns to me.

"Well, good morning, Ivan! Did you sleep well?" Mom says in a cheery voice, not the angry one she was talking to dad in.

"I slept fine. A little cold though." I say as I shiver.

"There's some cereal in the cupboard." she says and points me toward the kitchen, "And there's milk in the fridge."

I pour some cereal into an old, slightly cracked bowl, nothing special. Nothing ever is. I flip on the TV. The sound of breaking news plays. "This just in, Bunker 04 has been evacuated due to a gas leak. Officials have marked off the area and..." I tune out the TV. Stuff like this always happens and they always act like it's some big deal.

I'm walking back from the store underground when the entire tunnel system shakes. Dust falls from the ceiling. Lights flicker and go out. The floor vibrates under my feet. People start screaming and alarms start blaring. I calmly walk home, ignoring most of it. I enter Bunker 09C, my home. Mom and dad are in their rooms, hiding. Scared. I flop the groceries on the table, plop down on the couch and turn on the TV. It cuts to a blue screen and an E.A.S. sound plays. "This is not a drill. A bomb thought to be dormant has exploded. This is not a drill. All residents, take immediate shelter." says a robotic voice. I turn off the TV. Probably another one of those schemes I think. The Government always lies.If it were real, we would already be dead.

After about an hour everyone calms down, but me? I was calm the whole time. It's just another day in Bunker 09. There are 48 bunkers in total. They are all connected with tunnels, which are horribly maintained and often collapse.
