Chapter 211 - Chapter 211: Luna Lovegood's Gift

The shop's next customer turned out to be just as unusual as the Weasleys, though in a completely different way. Through the door came a tall, thin man with shoulder-length white hair that hung in wisps and slightly misaligned brown eyes. He wore a long set of loose robes and had a necklace hanging around his neck shaped like a triangular eye. Walking behind him was an eleven-year-old girl with dirty blonde hair that fell to her waist and eyebrows so pale they were almost invisible. What drew Julian's attention most, however, was her eyes. They were a silvery grey and filled with an unmistakable mix of curiosity and intelligence.

This was, of course, Xenophilius Lovegood and his daughter Luna, who had come to buy Luna's school supplies. Both Lovegoods looked mildly surprised to find Julian running the shop while Ollivander merely watched from a chair behind the counter. Still, neither of them was remotely narrow-minded, so they adapted to the sight immediately. "Good afternoon, sir. We are here to have my Luna matched with her first wand, if that is no trouble," Xenophilius said with a warm smile. "Not at all. If it helps put you at ease..." Julian began, only for Luna to interrupt him. "You hate saying that," she said, catching him off guard.

Julian knew perfectly well from the books that Luna was far more sensitive to magic than most wizards, but that did not mean he had been ready to have it pointed out so directly. He said nothing at first. Instead, he actively concealed all of his magical energy inside his body and watched as Luna's expression shifted visibly into surprise and confusion. "And here I thought I was performing the act perfectly," Julian said with a grin, but Luna only furrowed her brows and looked as if she were trying to locate something that had suddenly gone missing.

"You rely on that ability too much, I'm afraid. It would be better to learn how to read body language instead. Far more reliable," he added, trying to be helpful. Xenophilius and Ollivander both looked baffled by the exchange. "What ability are you talking about?" Luna's father asked curiously, because it was obvious Julian had noticed something about his daughter that he himself had not. "What do you know about accidental magic?" Julian asked calmly. Even though the subject had nothing to do with wand matching, Ollivander was far too interested now to redirect the conversation back to wands.

"It usually happens because of strong emotions and a lack of a normal outlet like a wand," Xeno answered confidently. Julian nodded. "That is mostly correct. But did you know witches and wizards are constantly releasing magical energy from their bodies?" Julian asked, and the man nodded. "That magical energy carries whatever emotion the person is feeling at the time. Luna seems to possess an innate ability to visibly perceive and interpret those energies, and because of that, she can pick up the rough intent of the person she is looking at. It is not flawless, however, as I just demonstrated to her, which is why I suggested learning body language as well," Julian explained.

Xeno turned to his daughter for confirmation, and from the look on her face, she seemed to believe the explanation herself. "It should be true, because all of his nargles disappeared, and now it's as if he isn't even there, which is rather bothersome," Luna said, making it very clear that she disliked Julian deliberately hiding his intentions from her. Julian chuckled at that while both Ollivander and Xeno stared in amazement after learning of Luna's gift. "Can you see those energies too? Is that how you knew how to stop her from reading yours? Can other people be taught how to do that as well?" Xeno asked eagerly, firing question after question at Julian while even Ollivander seemed intensely interested in the answers.

"In order, no, no, and no. I will answer any concerns you may have regarding your daughter's ability, but my own will remain private," Julian said firmly. Seeing there would be no more questions on that subject for the moment, he shifted the conversation back to Luna being matched with a wand, which was the reason they had come in the first place. Julian naturally began by taking Luna's measurements, though she looked extremely uncomfortable not being able to see what he was feeling and therefore what he was thinking while he worked.

Keeping her personality in mind, Julian immediately went to the ash wands in the shop, which caused Ollivander to raise an eyebrow in interest. Luna reached out, and each time she moved toward one of the wands that would have rejected her, Julian took it away before she could touch it. Luna was clearly startled by that, but clever as she was, she quickly began deliberately aiming for those particular wands to test him. Julian found that amusing and played along once he realized she was trying to figure out whether he had lied about being unable to see magical energy.

Unfortunately for her, he had not lied. He truly could not see it the way she did, because what he possessed was something far beyond her watered-down magical sense. He could not only feel magical energy, both outside and inside the body, but perceive far more than just the emotions carried within it.
