Chapter 153 - Chapter 153: Limits of a Borrowed Body

Julian ended up having to physically hold Helena back once she began touching everything in the workshop and throwing his carefully organized space into disarray. He could hardly throw her out either, because until she learned how to control the ring's corporeality, she would basically be announcing to Voldemort, Hey, look at me! I know how to have a body despite being a ghost! That would obviously end very badly for Julian. Even so, he had no intention of letting her ruin his workshop just because she was excited about being solid again.

"You do realize you can't use magic right now, don't you?" Julian asked after noticing her glaring at the transfigured rope keeping her restrained. She was clearly trying to cast some sort of wandless spell, but nothing was happening.

"Why?" she demanded in frustration after discovering that.

"If I had to guess, I'd say I would need to include knowledge of veritology in the enchantment if I want it to allow spellcasting. At the moment, you're basically just a muggle," he said plainly.

"ARGH! But it will take so long to get good at that!" she complained, visibly upset.

Julian merely shrugged, because there was nothing he could really do about it.

...

Veritology was the craft of making wands as magical focuses for the wizards of the world, and it went far deeper than it seemed at first glance. Julian honestly only knew the most basic information about the art, such as the fact that the wood had to come from a magical tree and the core had to be taken from a magical creature. That was essentially the full extent of his knowledge on the subject, leaving him in the awkward position of being unable to adjust the ring's enchantment any further. In the end, Helena had no choice but to accept that despite Julian's frankly absurd level of enchanting skill for someone his age, he still had very clear limitations.

After that, Julian could only set the subject of ring wraiths aside for the time being, because he already had several projects demanding his attention at once, and adding more would only burn him out. There was homework from his classes, the commission from McGonagall that was set to earn him a very handsome sum, his continued foundation solidification alongside the slow and steady training needed to increase his power, and on top of that he refused to completely sacrifice his social life. All of that meant he simply had no room in his schedule for another major subject right now.

Julian immediately noticed when Harry overheard the conversation between Snape and Quirrelmort in the Forbidden Forest, because the boy suddenly found the nerve to play Quidditch under the potion master's stare so he could keep an eye on him. Julian also noticed that Quirrell was growing paler and more sickly the nearer the match came. Harry believed that was because Quirrell was trying to break through the traps, but in truth it was due to the conflict between Voldemort's soul and Quirrell's soul and body.

...

At last the game arrived, and contrary to what many had expected, Harry caught the snitch within five minutes of the start by swooping within inches of Snape, much to the man's shock. The professor actually went pale because of it. After that, things stayed fairly quiet for quite a while. Nearly a month passed, and aside from Grindelwald's monthly sacrifice, nothing much seemed to happen. The teachers and Hermione, however, appeared to have decided to cram as much information as possible into the students' heads with summer and exams drawing closer.

Julian wanted no part of Hermione's campaign, since he had already proven that he had mastered the first year material and then some, forcing her to leave him out of her mandatory daily study sessions. Harry, Ron, Tracy, and Daphne were not nearly so fortunate, though, as Hermione dragged them off to the library after every day of classes. Julian was not idle during this stretch, however. He had been forced to make a ring that suppressed his presence because things had started to get out of hand. His physical body had also begun to change, though not in any dramatic way, just smaller things such as shifts in his complexion.

One thing he was thankful for, though, was that the transformation of his soul had finally finished. As a result, the spiritual energy he used while forging had become a perfectly equal blend of gold and white. This had also caused his magic to soar, leaving his energy pool at around the level of a mid fifth year student. To put that into perspective, Harry's magic was currently about equal to that of a third year student thanks to the boost from the soul shard. Unfortunately, Harry's growth had also stopped accelerating, which meant his magic had more or less settled into a normal rate of improvement unless he began training it more seriously.
