Chapter 156 - Chapter 156: A Useful Letter and a Violent Change

Julian was not especially concerned, since even in the book Malfoy had failed to accomplish anything with this information beyond making the golden trio panic. "Well, that just means it was a good thing we were planning to write to Mr. Scamander, doesn't it?" he said, and everyone's expressions immediately brightened.

"That's right! If we do that, Malfoy won't be able to stop us at all," Ron said excitedly.

"I honestly thought I'd have more time with little Norberta. But Mr. Scamander would probably know what's best for her," Hagrid said tearfully, clearly upset.

Julian noticed that Hagrid had actually gotten the little dragon's gender right this time, unlike in the book, and he assumed that was because of the ring on the half giant's finger. Still, once they had gotten an absence slip from Hagrid for missing class, the group left him alone. Julian was the one who sent the letter to Newt Scamander, explaining the situation and asking for help. He also included information about his wand core as an additional lure to catch the man's interest. Julian did not believe Newt was naive enough to miss what he was doing, but as someone who loved all things related to magizoology, he probably would not be able to resist the bait anyway.

...

A few days passed after that, and just as Julian had expected, Newt had indeed noticed the lure, because the reply he sent included a joking remark about it. Even so, Newt confirmed that he would come to Hogwarts personally and take the dragon without any trouble. The part that made Julian grimace, however, was the section of the letter where Newt said he would be informing Dumbledore during his visit. Still, the pickup time was suspiciously the same as in the book, a week and a half later.

Julian informed both his friends and Hagrid about this, and somehow Ron ended up with the letter, though Julian made no effort to stop that from happening. The events at the end of the year were drawing close, and there were several key developments that needed to happen to set the stage for Voldemort's eventual downfall. First and most importantly was the Forbidden Forest incident involving Harry, which required him to get detention in order for it to occur. At this point, Voldemort was struggling to remain inside Quirrell's body, which meant he was nearly harmless for the moment.

Julian was fairly sure the magic Voldemort had been using to hunt unicorns was the crippling kind rather than anything truly powerful, since he fled the moment a centaur appeared. If Voldemort had been capable of strong magic, he absolutely would have taken that chance to kill Harry, but he had not, which strongly suggested he simply could not.

...

During this waiting period, Julian was forced to deal with a bizarre illness that left him bedridden in the hospital wing, shivering, sweating blood, and vomiting chunks of flesh.

Madam Pomfrey had no idea what was happening, because every diagnostic spell she used insisted he was perfectly healthy. Julian knew they were not wrong. He was healthy. The problem was that he had reached the phase of his transformation where his bone marrow, organs, and flesh were beginning to be replaced by elven versions. While that process was underway, his body was violently rejecting its human parts, which had led to this grotesque situation. It caused quite a stir across Hogwarts, since despite the efforts of Madam Pomfrey, Snape, and even Dumbledore, Julian showed very little improvement. If all three of them had not determined that the strange illness was not actually life threatening, he would have been sent to Saint Mungo's for additional examination and treatment.

That condition made Newt's visit rather awkward for Julian, since he was unable to show the man the proper respect he deserved. Newt himself was an elderly but healthy looking man with wrinkled, sun browned skin, short messy grey hair, and a kind smile.

"You needn't worry about the young dragon. I've already taken care of it, though it seems a couple of students were caught breaking curfew over the matter and were given detention," he said from the foot of the hospital bed Julian was lying in.

"Hahaha! Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know which ones too, but I assume you're here because of the other thing from my memory," Julian said with a raspy laugh.

His throat was in terrible shape from coughing up blood and flesh, so his voice sounded awful.

"Yes. I admit, you certainly managed to catch my interest with that information. I had to do quite a bit of digging to find evidence for your claims, but the available information on this magical bird is incomplete, to put it mildly," Newt said honestly.
