Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Scales of Ma’at

The third dawn before descent carried a stillness that felt almost sacred. No birds sang; even the Nile seemed to hold its breath. Mist clung low to the water, turning the world soft and silver-gray. Kael-Ankh woke before the others, the weight of tomorrow pressing against his ribs like an unseen hand. He slipped from the rooftop, careful not to disturb Senet and Meret, who slept tangled together under a single thin blanket, their breathing slow and synchronized.

Nefertari had not returned to the compound last night. She had whispered something about "preparing the shrine" and vanished into the dark with only the faint chime of her ankle bells lingering behind.

Kael walked to the small shrine of Anubis—a modest mudbrick niche tucked behind Ptahhotep's main sanctuary. Inside waited the elder, kneeling before a low table that held the true tools of judgment: a miniature golden scale balanced on a djed pillar base, two small feather-shaped weights carved from alabaster, a heart-shaped amulet of red jasper, and an open scroll—the Book of the Dead – Chapter 125: The Declaration of Innocence.

Ptahhotep did not rise. He simply gestured for Kael to kneel opposite him.

"Before we enter the Duat," the elder said quietly, "you must understand what awaits every soul—including yours, should you fall. Anubis does not judge. He prepares the heart for judgment. The weighing is Thoth's domain, but the jackal stands at the scales to ensure no trickery occurs."

He unrolled the scroll further. The vignette showed the Hall of Two Truths: Osiris enthroned, Isis and Nephthys behind him, forty-two assessor deities lining the walls, Anubis steadying the scale while Thoth recorded the verdict on papyrus, the Devourer Ammit crouching hungry beneath.

"The rite of weighing is both trial and mercy," Ptahhotep continued. "The deceased stands before the forty-two judges and recites the Negative Confession—'I have not killed, I have not stolen, I have not lied…'—naming each sin he did not commit. His heart is placed on the left pan; Ma'at's feather on the right. If the heart is heavier than the feather—burdened by guilt—Ammit devours it, and the soul ceases to exist. If balanced or lighter, the soul is declared maa-kheru—true of voice—and enters the Field of Reeds."

He lifted the heart amulet.

"This is no mere symbol. In the Duat, your heart will be weighed literally. Every act, every thought, every bond—good and ill—adds weight or lifts it. Thoth's book records it all."

He opened to a fresh page in the scroll.

"The Book of the Dead is not one text but many. The oldest versions—Pyramid Texts—were royal spells carved in tombs. Coffin Texts democratized them for nobles. By the New Kingdom, the Book of Going Forth by Day became a personalized guide, illustrated and customized. Chapter 125 is the most famous: the Declaration, the weighing, the address to Osiris. But there are others—spells to transform into a swallow, to breathe in the afterlife, to repel crocodiles in the Duat, to open the mouth so the Ka may eat and speak."

Ptahhotep traced a line of hieratic.

"Memorize this passage. Speak it when we reach the first gate. It will prove your worth."

Kael leaned forward, reading aloud the words of the Negative Confession—slow, deliberate, letting each denial sink into his Ka.

"I have not done iniquity… I have not robbed with violence… I have not caused terror… I have not uttered lies…"

With each line, a faint silver light shimmered along the scroll. Anubis's fragment stirred—cool shadow wrapping around his heart like a protective bandage.

Kael felt the words settle into his bones—weightless yet unyielding.

Ptahhotep rolled the scroll carefully.

"Keep it close. When we face the judges, these words may be your only shield."

The others arrived as the sun cleared the horizon—Senet rubbing sleep from her eyes, Meret stretching like a cat, Nefertari appearing last with the scent of incense and lotus oil clinging to her skin.

Training resumed with renewed focus.

Kael paired the Spear of Montu with the Declaration invocation—each thrust punctuated by a whispered denial of sin, the weapon flaring brighter as though cleansed. Senet's arrows flew true, guided by Neith's huntress echo. Meret's khopesh carved arcs of silver light. Nefertari's sistrum waves clashed with the strikes, creating barriers of sound and joy.

By late afternoon they were exhausted but exhilarated.

They retreated to the shaded birth-house—Taweret's domain—where the air was still thick with protective myrrh. Ptahhotep excused himself to prepare final supplies.

The four of them collapsed onto reed mats near the statue.

Senet curled against Kael's side, head on his chest.

Meret sprawled across his legs, fingers tracing idle patterns on his thigh.

Nefertari knelt behind him, knees bracketing his hips, hands sliding under his kilt to massage slow circles across his abdomen.

No words at first—just touch.

Senet lifted her head, kissing him softly—gentle, lingering, tasting of dates and river water. Meret shifted upward, nuzzling his neck, teeth grazing his pulse point. Nefertari pressed closer from behind, breasts soft against his back, fingers dipping lower to stroke him slowly, teasingly.

Kael groaned into Senet's mouth.

They moved as one—unhurried, sensual, reverent.

Senet straddled his lap, dress hiked to her hips, guiding him inside her with a soft sigh. She rocked slowly—deep, rolling motions that made her breath hitch. Meret knelt beside them, kissing Senet's throat while her hand slipped between their bodies to circle Senet's clit in gentle rhythm.

Nefertari remained behind Kael, arms wrapped around him, nails lightly raking down his chest while she whispered filthy praise against his ear: "Feel how tight she is for you… how wet… give her everything…"

Senet's pace quickened—hips grinding harder, breasts bouncing softly. She came with a trembling cry, clenching around him, head falling back against Meret's shoulder.

Meret took her place immediately—turning to face away, lowering herself onto him reverse, back arched, hands braced on his thighs. She rode him with fierce, rolling thrusts—ass slapping against his hips, moans rising in pitch. Senet knelt in front, kissing Meret deeply while fingering her, drawing out gasps and shudders.

Nefertari watched, eyes dark with hunger. When Meret climaxed—body shaking, a sharp cry escaping—Nefertari pushed her gently aside.

"My turn."

She mounted him facing forward, knees wide, hands braced on his chest. She sank down slowly—agonizingly slow—taking every inch with a low, satisfied purr. Then she moved—deep, deliberate rolls that ground her clit against his pelvis on every downstroke.

Kael gripped her hips, thrusting up to meet her. Senet and Meret flanked them—Senet kissing Nefertari's neck, Meret sucking marks along her collarbone.

Nefertari rode harder—faster—claws digging into Kael's shoulders, drawing thin red lines. She came with a wild, throaty yowl—body convulsing, inner walls fluttering around him.

Kael followed—spilling deep inside her with a guttural groan, hips bucking.

They collapsed together—sweat-slick, trembling, laughing softly in the afterglow.

Senet kissed his temple.

Meret nuzzled his neck.

Nefertari stayed astride him a moment longer, leaning down to whisper:

"One day I'll let you keep it there."

She kissed him once—slow, deep—then slid off, curling against his side.

They lay entwined as the sun dipped lower, the protective aura of Taweret's statue wrapping around them like a warm blanket.
