Chapter 64 - CHAPTER 64: CONCEPTUAL GRASP

RED AND THE APOCALYPSE

Chapter 64 — Conceptual Grasp

Kaito stared at Tokita.

For several long, suffocating seconds, the only sound in the cramped concrete cell was the distant, rhythmic dripping of a rusty pipe somewhere down the hallway.

Then, Kaito finally broke the silence.

"What the hell are you planning to do?"

Tokita looked up at him through his long, dark fringe. A faint, knowing smirk touched the corner of his lips.

"Not me."

Kaito's eyebrows furrowed into deep ridges. "Huh?"

Tokita's smirk widened slightly, his eyes sharp.

"We."

Kaito stared at him, his face blank. "...We?"

"Yeah."

Kaito gave him a deeply skeptical, almost offended look. "And what, exactly, are we doing?"

Tokita pointed a casual finger down toward Natsuki, who was shivering violently on the rusted bottom bunk.

"You're going to pull the bullet out."

Kaito blinked once. Twice. "...What?"

Tokita then pointed a thumb at his own chest. "And I'm going to heal the wound."

Complete, absolute silence fell over the cell.

Kaito looked at Tokita. Then he looked down at Natsuki's blood-soaked, torn pant leg. Then he looked back at Tokita. His expression slowly shifted from mild confusion to sheer, unadulterated disbelief.

I'm going to pull the bullet out...?

And he's going to heal it...?

"What the hell are you talking about, Tokita?!" Kaito burst out in a harsh whisper. "Are you out of your mind?!"

Tokita simply shrugged, entirely unbothered. "You'll understand in a second."

Kaito narrowed his eyes into dangerous slits. "That explanation somehow made my anxiety ten times worse."

Tokita let out a soft chuckle. Then, his casual demeanor melted away, replaced by a cold, absolute seriousness that instantly commanded the small room.

"Kaito. Listen to me very attentively."

Kaito swallowed hard, instinctively straightening his posture. "Okay... I'm listening."

"You already know what your ability is," Tokita stated quietly.

Kaito glanced down at his own calloused hands, flexing his fingers. "Gravity manipulation. I shift weight."

"Exactly," Tokita agreed, stepping closer until he was standing right in front of Kaito. "But you're thinking about it the wrong way. You're treating your ability like it's a mechanical switch."

Tokita pointed toward the rusted steel bedframe beside them. "In your head, you think: 'Increase gravity.'"

He pointed down toward the cold, damp concrete floor. "Or: 'Decrease gravity.'"

Then, Tokita locked his gaze directly onto Kaito's eyes. "But that's not what your ability actually is, Kaito."

Kaito remained completely still, the air in his lungs freezing.

"Your ability doesn't respond to equations," Tokita continued, his voice dropping into a low, resonant hum. "It responds to how you perceive it."

Kaito's eyes narrowed slightly. "You mean... my imagination?"

Tokita nodded once. "Your imagination. Your understanding. Your perception. Especially your perception."

Kaito shook his head, frustration creeping into his face. "I still don't get it, man. How does that help us extract a lead slug from his thigh?"

"You will," Tokita replied calmly.

He took another step forward, his shadow engulfing Kaito.

"Stand up."

Kaito hesitated, looking down at Natsuki, then slowly stood to his full height.

Tokita pointed toward Natsuki's wounded leg. "Extend your right hand. Hover it over his thigh."

Kaito did as he was told. His arm reached out, his open palm suspended about four inches directly above the torn, crimson-stained fabric covering Natsuki's bullet wound.

Tokita watched him intently. "Now. Close your eyes."

Kaito let his eyelids fall shut.

"Empty your mind."

Kaito's brow immediately furrowed in darkness. "That's easier said than done, Tokita."

"Try," Tokita commanded, his tone firm and unyielding.

"I don't even know how to empty my mind!"

Tokita smiled faintly. "You don't have to make your mind a blank void. Just stop thinking about everything else."

He stepped up right beside Kaito, his presence heavy and grounding. "Disconnect from the noise."

Kaito took a slow, deep breath through his nose. His chest expanded.

He held it.

Then, he exhaled.

Slowly, remarkably, the oppressive environment of the prison block began to dissolve. The low hum of the flickering fluorescent lights faded. The distant moans of the prisoners vanished. The sharp stench of rust and mold receded.

Everything became quiet. Serene.

Kaito took another breath.

In.

Out.

His tense shoulders dropped. His muscles relaxed.

And then—something shifted.

A faint, localized pressure bloomed around his outstretched hand. The air above Natsuki's leg trembled violently, bending light like heat waves rising off asphalt.

Natsuki's injured leg twitched.

Kaito's eyes remained shut, but his mind expanded. Slowly, millimeter by millimeter, Natsuki's leg began to hover upwards, floating off the mattress.

Kaito's eyebrows twitched under the sudden sensation. He could feel it now—not as an equation, but as an physical truth. Gravity wasn't just a force pulling down; it was a fabric. He wasn't turning a dial; he was physically touching the concept of weight itself.

The sensation surged up his arm like an electrical current. His fingers trembled violently.

Tokita watched the floating leg with sharp, approving eyes. "Good."

Kaito swallowed, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "What now...?"

"Don't force it," Tokita instructed softly.

Kaito's breathing turned ragged. "I'm... I'm trying!"

"Calm down," Tokita's voice was an anchor in the dark. "Now. Visualize the wound."

Kaito frowned behind his closed eyes. "The wound?"

"Yes."

"I don't know how to do that, Tokita. I'm not a doctor."

"Then I'll guide you."

Kaito felt Tokita's firm right hand settle against his upper back, right between his shoulder blades.

The instant Tokita's palm made contact—

Reality shattered.

Kaito's eyes snapped open.

He was no longer standing in the damp, claustrophobic prison cell.

There were no concrete walls. No iron bars. No floor beneath his boots. No ceiling above his head. There was no Natsuki, no guards, no sound, no air.

There was only an infinite, blinding, boundless expanse of pure, absolute white.

Kaito spun around in place, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What...?"

His voice didn't echo. It simply existed within the vast nothingness.

"What the hell is this?! Where am I?!"

"Do you see it?" a voice asked.

Kaito froze. He turned around instantly.

Tokita was standing just a few feet away. But he didn't look entirely human—he looked like a towering, shadowy silhouette etched against the stark white void, his dark eyes glowing faintly beneath his fringe.

Kaito's eyes widened in sheer shock. "Tokita...?! Is that... is that you, buddy?!"

"It's me," Tokita replied calmly, his shadow-like form completely relaxed within the infinite space. "Now focus."

Kaito looked around the boundless void once more, his mind reeling. "I..." He swallowed hard, the realization hitting him like a freight train. "I think... I think I'm inside my own mind."

Tokita gave a singular, firm nod. "Something like that."

Kaito stared at him, utterly terrified and amazed. "How... how are you doing this?! How are you inside my head?!"

Tokita didn't answer the question. Instead, he simply asked again, his voice echoing with supreme authority: "Do you see it?"

"See what?!" Kaito yelled back, turning in circles. "There's nothing here!"

"Look closer," Tokita commanded. "Look past the surface."

Kaito slowly turned his head.

At first, there was only the blinding white expanse.

And then—something flickered in the far distance.

A tiny, microscopic point of light.

Kaito squinted, taking a cautious step forward. The light flared, expanding rapidly into a blinding, magnificent sphere.

It glowed with a brilliant, radiating mix of deep orange and scorching yellow, hovering silently in the void like a miniature sun.

Thump.

It pulsed. A rhythmic, heavy beat that shook the very foundation of the white space.

Kaito stared at it, mesmerized. "Wait..." He took another step closer, his breath catching in his throat. "Is that..."

Tokita stepped up beside him. "Your core."

Kaito's eyes stretched wide. "My... my core?!"

"Yeah," Tokita said gently. "Now you're starting to understand."

The orange-yellow star pulsed again.

Thump.

A massive, sweeping wave of raw, golden energy rippled outward from the sphere, washing over Kaito's body. He instinctively flinched, taking a step back, but the energy didn't burn. It felt... right.

"What am I supposed to do with it?" Kaito whispered.

"Walk toward it," Tokita said. "Claim it."

Kaito moved forward, step by step. The closer he got to the miniature sun, the more overwhelming the sensation became. The sphere wasn't just a pool of power—it felt alive. It felt ancient, familiar, and inherently his. It was a part of his soul that had been buried beneath layers of doubt, human limitation, and surface-level thinking.

Kaito raised a shaking hand.

His fingertips brushed against the glowing, fluid surface of the sun.

The moment his skin touched the light—

BOOM!

A soundless detonation of pure energy erupted through his entire existence.

Kaito gasped, his head snapping back as golden fire flooded his nervous system.

He didn't feel physically heavier or lighter—he felt transcendent. A massive, unstoppable current of force surged up from his core, tearing through his chest, flooding down his arm muscles, shooting through his spine, and igniting every single cell in his body.

Kaito raised his hands in front of his face. Golden, static sparks of gravitational aura were leaping between his fingers like living lightning.

"I..." Kaito breathed, his voice trembling violently.

Tokita watched him with a quiet smile. "Do you feel it?"

Kaito nodded slowly, tears of pure awe welling in his eyes. "Yeah... God, yeah... I feel... weightless."

He clenched his right fist, and the air around it collapsed inward with a sharp pop.

"When I used my ability before... I thought I was just pushing buttons," Kaito stammered, trying to make sense of the overwhelming revelation. "I'd try to make an object heavier... or make it float... or slow something down..."

He looked back at Tokita, his glowing yellow eyes wild with realization. "But this... Tokita, this feels like what happened when Hoshina took control of my body back at the school!"

Tokita's eyes narrowed slightly, a subtle smirk playing on his face. "You mean like when you were ripping entire concrete buildings out of the foundation and throwing them at me?"

"Yes!" Kaito shouted. "That exact same feeling! The core isn't just a gas tank—it's me!"

Tokita's smile broadened. "That's it."

Kaito looked back at his burning golden core. "What is?"

"Your true ability," Tokita explained, gesturing to the miniature sun. "It's not just 'gravity.' You were trying to manipulate weight from the outside, like pulling levers on a crane. But your ability originates from within."

Tokita tapped Kaito's upper back again.

"Now. Look at Natsuki."

Kaito blinked. "But he's not here. We're in a void."

"He is here," Tokita corrected softly. "Your mind doesn't need to follow the rules of physical reality. Visualize him."

Kaito closed his eyes tight.

He summoned the memory of Natsuki lying on the rusted cot. He pictured his ash-gray skin, his sweat-slicked forehead, his clenched jaw, and the dark, wet hole torn into his thigh.

Then—he opened his eyes.

Within the vast white void, a translucent, glowing blue projection of Natsuki materialized in mid-air right before them.

Kaito stepped up to it. The projection was incredibly detailed—he could see the outer layer of skin, the muscle fibers, the intricate network of red blood vessels...

And buried deep within the dark, torn meat of the upper thigh, resting directly against the bone, was a jagged, flattened piece of distorted lead.

The bullet.

Kaito's glowing yellow eyes locked onto the metal slug. "I see it... I see the bullet!"

Tokita smiled, his shadowy form stepping back. "Now you know what to do."

SNAP!

The white void collapsed instantly.

Kaito slammed back into reality with a violent shudder.

The harsh, yellow glare of the flickering fluorescent lights flooded his vision. The suffocating smell of damp concrete, rust, and old blood invaded his lungs. The distant, echoed chatter of the prison block crashed back into his ears.

THUD!

Natsuki's leg dropped heavily back onto the stained mattress.

"Ah—gagh!" Natsuki gasped, his eyes flying open as agony shot through his torso.

Kaito was breathing in heavy, ragged gulps. His eyes weren't their normal color anymore—they were glowing with a brilliant, scorching yellow light that illuminated the dark cell.

He locked his gaze onto Natsuki's bleeding wound.

And then, a terrifying phenomenon occurred.

The flesh around the bullet hole began to warp.

Not the skin itself, but the spatial field directly beneath it. Kaito didn't just see the wound with his eyes—he perceived the exact coordinates of the lead slug buried four inches deep. He felt its mass, its density, its shape, and its distance down to the micrometer.

Kaito slowly raised his right hand, spreading his fingers wide over the wound.

"Come... to me..." Kaito growled through gritted teeth.

Deep inside Natsuki's thigh, the bullet trembled.

Natsuki's eyes shot wide open in pure terror. "What the—what are you doing to me?!"

The metallic slug shifted beneath his muscle tissue. A tiny, horrifying bulge rippled across his skin.

Kaito's jaw set, veins bulging along his neck. "Come on!"

SHIVER!

The bullet began vibrating at an insane frequency, tearing through the trapped blood pockets.

Natsuki's fists gripped the metal frame of the bed until his knuckles turned white. "AHHHHH! SHIT! KAITO, STOP!"

Kaito's entire arm was shaking violently, sweat pouring off his chin, his yellow aura flaring around his body like a solar flare.

"JUST... GET... OUT!" Kaito roared.

CLICK-POP!

With a sickening, wet sound, the mangled lead bullet tore through the entrance wound, breaking free of the flesh! It shot backward through the air like a fired round, slamming violently into the far concrete wall!

CLANG!

The bullet bounced off the wall and rattled across the stone floor, coming to a rest in the center of the cell.

Kaito stumbled backward from the sudden release of pressure, slamming his back against the opposite wall. "AH!"

He slid down an inch, gasping for air, his brilliant yellow eyes wide with absolute, breathless shock. He looked at the bloody piece of lead sitting on the floor. Then he looked at Natsuki's leg. Then back at the lead.

"I..." Kaito breathed, a hysterical, disbelieving grin splitting his face in two. "I actually... I fucking did it!"

He burst into a breathless laugh, clutching his head. "HOLY SHIT! I DID IT! I PULLED IT OUT WITH GRAVITY!"

Then his eyes fell on Natsuki, who was curled into a tight ball on the cot, trembling violently and sobbing silently from the sheer, blinding agony of having a bullet forcefully yanked backward through his raw flesh.

Kaito's laughter died instantly. His face went pale. "Oh... oh my God, dude! I'm so sorry!"

Natsuki slowly turned his head, his face slick with cold sweat, his bloodshot eyes glinting with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"Shut... the fuck... up..." Natsuki wheezed out, his teeth grinding together so hard they creaked.

Kaito froze, holding his hands up defensively. "...Right. Sorry."

Natsuki slumped back against the pillow, his chest heaving as blood continued to ooze freely from the now-empty bullet track.

Kaito snapped his head around to face Tokita, his mind completely blown. "What the hell was that...?! How the hell did I just do that, Tokita?!"

Tokita simply stood there, a quiet, satisfied smile on his face. "I told you. You just needed to change your perception."

Kaito stared at him, awe shining in his eyes. "You... you were training me. In a split second."

"Exactly," Tokita replied smoothly. He then turned his gaze toward Natsuki's bleeding leg. "Now it's my turn. I'm going to heal him."

Kaito nodded quickly, stepping back to give him room. "Right. Do it."

Natsuki, still half-delirious from the sheer pain of the extraction, barely registered what they were saying. "Heal me...? With what...?"

Tokita stepped up to the side of the bunk. He crouched down silently, his dark fringe casting a deep shadow over the upper half of his face.

He raised his right hand and hovered his bare palm directly over the gaping, bleeding hole in Natsuki's thigh.

And then—he pressed his palm firmly against the raw wound.

The very instant Tokita's skin made contact with Natsuki's blood—

The atmosphere in the entire cell block ruptured.

A low, deep, terrifying hum vibrated through the concrete floor.

Kaito froze in place, his breath catching in his throat. His yellow aura completely vanished, extinguished by a far more overwhelming presence.

A deep, crimson light flared to life around Tokita's body.

It wasn't a sudden, explosive burst like Kaito's gravity, nor was it flickering like Natsuki's lightning. It was a thick, hyper-dense layer of burning red energy that clung tightly to Tokita's frame like liquid fire.

It was impossibly refined. Impossibly heavy.

Kaito slowly backed away until his shoulders hit the concrete wall, his eyes wide with instinctual terror.

"Wait..." Kaito whispered, his voice trembling. "That's..."

He had seen dozens of awakened ability users over the past few weeks. Every single person carried a unique, distinct visual signature that reflected their soul. Aoi's aura was a light Emerald, Mira's serene pink. Natsuki's was a crackling, aggressive blue. Kaito's was a heavy, radiating yellow.

And Tokita's... was a deep, menacing, blood red.

Kaito swallowed hard, cold sweat running down his spine. So this is it... This is his real power...

Tokita's red aura didn't surge outward to destroy things. It sat there, perfectly controlled, perfectly condensed—a terrifying reservoir of unimaginable force held under absolute, effortless command.

He can hide it, Kaito realized with a shock that chilled him to the bone. He's been suppressing this entire ocean of energy the whole time... even when the guards were threatening us.

And the moment that crimson light illuminated the dark cell, the reaction across the prison block was instantaneous.

The quiet murmurs down the hallway died instantly.

A hardened, tattooed inmate sitting against the far wall snapped his head around, his eyes wild with sudden panic. Guards standing on the upper catwalks gripped their rifles tightly, their eyes wide as the temperature in the corridor dropped by ten degrees.

Whispers exploded through the darkness like a panic attack.

"What the hell is that light...?"

"Red... It's blood red!"

"Is that kid an ability user?! I thought the warden said he was powerless!"

"Jesus Christ... look at the pressure around that cell..."

Kaito heard the panic spreading outside, but he couldn't bring himself to care. His entire existence was fixed on Tokita.

He's not just using his ability... he's commanding reality itself.

Tokita's face was completely devoid of emotion now. The playful smirk was gone. His dark eyes glowed with a terrifying, crimson intensity beneath his bangs as he focused his mind entirely on the physical structure of Natsuki's leg.

[Conceptual Grasp]

Tokita's ability was never about brute physical force. It wasn't about destruction or raw output.

It was about the absolute understanding of a concept—and imposing that understanding upon reality itself.

Tokita focused.

His perception bypassed the outer skin, shooting deep into Natsuki's biological makeup. To Tokita, the injury wasn't just a gaping hole in flesh—it was a broken concept.

He perceived the torn muscle fibers. The severed capillaries. The damaged arterial walls. The microscopic cellular destruction. The body's panicked, overwhelming immune response trying desperately to stop the hemorrhaging.

He saw the nerves, the blood vessels, the white blood cells, the bone marrow... Flesh became completely transparent to his mind. He saw the intricate biological machinery working frantically beneath the surface.

Tokita locked his mind onto a single, absolute concept:

[Recovery.]

He didn't try to magically forge new skin out of thin air like Mira's divine, gentle light. Instead, Tokita reached into the body's internal engine—specifically, the immune and cellular regeneration systems.

His mind locked around the concept of the body's natural healing response.

And then—he squeezed.

[Amplify.]

Tokita didn't just boost Natsuki's immune system by ten percent, or twenty percent. He forced the biological machinery beyond every known law of human biology, amplifying the body's self-repair mechanisms by well over a thousand percent!

For a split second, nothing happened.

And then—

THUMP!

Natsuki's heart slammed against his ribs with the force of a sledgehammer!

Kaito gasped, stumbling back.

THUMP!

Another violent, chest-heaving heartbeat echoed in the small cell.

THUMP-THUMP! THUMP-THUMP! THUMP-THUMP!

Natsuki's heart accelerated into an insane, frantic rhythm! His chest heaved violently as oxygen flooded his bloodstream at an impossible rate! His eyes snapped wide open, glowing blue as his body went into hyper-drive!

"WHAT THE—! WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME?!" Natsuki screamed, his entire frame shaking on the mattress!

Tokita remained perfectly still, his crimson aura flaring brilliantly as he held the concept in his grip for five solid seconds.

Then—he pulled his hand away.

The very instant physical contact was broken—

The wound began to rewrite itself.

Kaito and Natsuki watched in absolute, stunned horror.

The torn, shredded muscle tissue inside the thigh began violently pulling itself back together, weaving like frantic threads on a loom! The severed blood vessels fused shut in seconds. The deep, gaping hole closed up, new skin generating at a speed that defied nature!

Within ten seconds, the bleeding stopped completely.

The dark, blood-soaked crater was gone—replaced by smooth, completely repaired skin, leaving behind only a faint pink scar that faded into nothingness.

Natsuki's rapid, pounding heartbeat slowly decelerated, returning to a calm, steady rhythm. The intense pallor on his face vanished, replaced by a healthy, warm color.

The red aura around Tokita quietly dissolved into the air, leaving the cell in dark, heavy quiet once more.

Kaito couldn't speak. His jaw was hanging open so wide it hurt.

Natsuki slowly pushed himself up into a sitting position on the cot. He stared down at his leg in absolute, uncomprehending shock. He touched his thigh. He pinched the skin.

There was no pain. No blood. No hole.

His vision, which had been blurry and dim moments ago, was crystal clear.

Natsuki slowly raised his head, his wide eyes darting from his perfectly healed leg, to Kaito's stunned face, and finally to Tokita.

Tokita wiped a small smudge of Natsuki's dried blood off his palm onto his jeans. He noticed Kaito staring at him as if he had just watched a monster crawl out of the earth.

Tokita raised a casual eyebrow. "What's wrong?"

Kaito didn't answer. He couldn't.

Tokita tilted his head, genuinely confused. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Kaito swallowed hard, his throat completely dry. He took a shaky step toward Tokita, pointing a trembling finger at his chest.

"Dude..." Kaito whispered, his voice cracking with absolute awe and terror. "What in the absolute fuck... is your actual identity?"
