Chapter 1 - Prologue

The role of a governess pertains to the moral cultivation of her pupils, the imparting of knowledge, and the instruction of youth in the ordinary conduct of life — Occupations of Women: A Governess's Guide to Household Duties and Etiquette

"For the sake of my understanding," an aged, elegant voice murmured, its cadence brushing against Lydia's ears, "you wish to accept the position of resident governess within this household."

Lydia lifted her gaze to the Viscountess's Seneschal, a woman whose bearing resembled that of a seasoned warrior rather than a domestic official. Long grey curls fell in disciplined waves over her shoulders; silver loops adorned her elongated ears; and her loose sky‑blue linen tunic did little to conceal the bronzed strength of her limbs. Her eyes, sharp and unyielding, held the cold vigilance of a mountain predator, and their scrutiny sent a faint chill along Lydia's spine.

In manner and presence, she reminded Lydia of her grandmother—formal, calculating, impeccably proper.

Even so, Lydia maintained her composure.

"Your reputation and breadth of knowledge exceed what one typically encounters among applicants to a minor noble household," the Seneschal continued, tapping the résumé upon her desk. Her talon‑like nails struck the wood with the slow, deliberate rhythm of a blacksmith's hammer. Though her words were courteous, her posture remained dignified and exact. "My Lady would be honoured to employ someone of your calibre for her children. However, we find ourselves uncertain as to why our household meets your requisites."

And your background, though that remained unspoken.

Lydia cleared her throat, her voice low but steady. "I have achieved in a few years what others may require decades to accomplish. I now wish to devote myself to the shaping of young minds and to contribute, in my small way, to the refinement of the Empire's nobility."

The Seneschal's fingers resumed their measured tapping as her gaze assessed Lydia with unwavering precision.

"Does your household harbour any reservations regarding your employment?" The question was standard, yet delivered with disarming directness.

"My household is fully supportive," Lydia replied.

"Your references"—she tapped another page—"meet all requisite standards. Should you accept our offer, you will undergo a probationary period of one month, as is customary. If our Young Miss and Master take well to your tutelage, your annual earnings shall be three hundred and thirty‑six golden croeas. Is this acceptable, Miss Cinderoka?"

"It is," Lydia answered with a respectful nod.

"Then allow me to welcome you, Miss Cinderoka, to the Viscountess's staff. I wish you every success in your service as our resident governess." The Seneschal rose and extended her calloused hand. Lydia accepted it with calm dignity.

"May Heira bless you."

"And may Heira bless you as well."
