We attended a friend's birthday party that weekend.
Music, laughter, drinks everywhere.
At one point I lost sight of Daniel.
Then I saw him across the room.
Talking to Vanessa.
They were standing very close again.
Someone beside me joked,
"They look like a couple."
The words hit me like a slap.
I forced a smile.
But my stomach twisted painfully.
Was everyone else seeing something I refused to accept?
Or was I the only one noticing?
Daniel suddenly saw me watching.
He stepped away from Vanessa immediately.
Too quickly.
That alone told me something.
Why did he look guilty?
