Chapter 1 - WHEN WE MEET AGAIN

CHAPTER ONE

THE NIGHT EVERYTHING ENDED

The school hall glittered beneath golden lights, decorated with white and gold streamers that swayed gently whenever someone passed. Music filled the air as students celebrated their final night together.

For most people, it was a night of happiness, laughter, and beautiful memories.

For Aisha, it was supposed to be the night she finally told Daniel how she felt.

She stood near the entrance, smoothing the blue dress she had spent hours choosing. Her eyes moved across the crowded hall, searching for one familiar face.

Daniel.

They had been best friends since their first year of secondary school. They had shared secrets, laughed at ridiculous jokes, fought over little things, and made promises about staying in each other's lives forever.

But somewhere along the way, Aisha had fallen in love with him.

She had never said it aloud, and Daniel had never confessed anything either. Still, there were moments when his eyes lingered on hers a little too long, when his hand brushed against hers and neither of them moved away.

Those moments had given her hope.

Tonight, she wanted answers.

"You're looking for him again, aren't you?"

Aisha turned to see Amaka, her best friend, standing beside her with a knowing smile.

"Looking for who?" Aisha asked innocently.

Amaka rolled her eyes. "Please, don't start. I've watched you search for Daniel since we arrived."

Aisha laughed nervously. "I just want to talk to him."

"Then go and find him before the night ends."

Aisha nodded and stepped away from her friend.

She checked near the refreshment table, the dance floor, and the group of students taking pictures beside the stage. Daniel was nowhere to be found.

Just when she was about to give up, Amaka returned.

"I think I saw him outside," she said.

Aisha's face brightened. "Really?"

"Yes. He's with some people."

Without waiting for another word, Aisha hurried toward the exit.

The cool night breeze touched her face as she stepped outside. She looked around the decorated courtyard, searching among the students gathered in small groups.

Then she saw him.

Daniel stood beneath a string of fairy lights, laughing with a group of people. His white shirt was neatly tucked into his black trousers, and his familiar smile made Aisha's heart skip.

For a moment, she simply watched him.

Then she noticed the girl standing beside him.

The girl was beautiful, wearing a fitted red dress. She stood so close to Daniel that their shoulders touched. She laughed at something he said and placed a hand on his arm.

Daniel smiled at her.

Aisha's heart sank.

Perhaps it was nothing. Perhaps the girl was just a friend. Aisha tried to convince herself of that, but then the girl leaned closer and whispered something into Daniel's ear.

He laughed again.

Aisha felt foolish for ever believing that tonight would be different.

She had spent weeks imagining how she would tell him the truth about her feelings. She had imagined his surprised smile, the possibility of him admitting that he felt the same way, and the beginning of something beautiful between them.

Now those dreams seemed ridiculous.

She took a step backward.

Daniel turned slightly, and for one brief moment, their eyes met.

His smile disappeared.

"Aisha?"

She froze.

He began moving toward her, but she turned away before he could reach her.

"Aisha, wait!"

She walked faster, refusing to look back. She could hear him calling her name, but the tears gathering in her eyes made it difficult to see clearly.

She didn't want an explanation.

She didn't want to hear that she had misunderstood what she saw.

Most of all, she didn't want Daniel to discover how much he had hurt her.

When she finally reached the gate, she stopped and looked back once.

Daniel was still standing in the courtyard, staring after her.

For a second, she almost returned to him.

Almost.

But pride and heartbreak held her in place.

She turned away and walked into the night, carrying feelings she had never confessed and questions she was too hurt to ask.

That evening, Aisha made herself a promise.

She would forget Daniel.

She would forget the friendship, the laughter, and every moment that had made her believe they could become something more.

She didn't know that Daniel had been running after her to explain something that could have changed everything.

She didn't know that one misunderstanding would separate them for six long years.

And she certainly didn't know that fate would bring them face-to-face again.

Because sometimes, the night you believe everything has ended is only the beginning of a story you are not yet ready to understand.
