Chapter 1 - Chapter 2:

The Heartbeat in the Gears

The object she brought was a rare "Heartbeat Watch"—a pocket watch designed to tick only when it sensed the wearer's pulse. But it had stopped.

"It belonged to my grandmother," Sloane whispered as Elias opened the casing with surgical precision. "She said when it stops, it means the owner has forgotten how to feel."

As Elias worked, Sloane returned every evening. They shared tea among the grandfather clocks. He learned she was a travel photographer, always moving, never staying in one city long enough to see the seasons change.

"Why do you run?" he asked one night, his tweezers poised over a microscopic spring.

"Because if I stay still, I have to face the silence," she admitted.

Elias reached across the workbench, his calloused hand brushing hers. "Silence is just the space between two heartbeats, Sloane. It's not a void; it's a rest."
