Chapter 13 - CHAPTER ELEVEN: The Night Before

The clan gathered one last time before dawn.

They painted themselves for war—swirling patterns of white and red that glowed faintly in the bioluminescent light. They sharpened their weapons. They said goodbye to their families.

Seri painted Kaelen's face herself. Her touch was gentle, her eyes serious.

"No." He caught her hand. "My own kind is here now. My own body is this one." He touched his chest. "Whatever happens tomorrow, I want you to know—"

"Don't." She pressed her fingers to his lips. "Don't say goodbye. We'll say hello tomorrow. After we win."

He nodded. But as she finished the painting, as she stepped back to admire her work, he saw the fear in her eyes. The same fear he felt.

They were all going to die tomorrow.
