Chapter 33 - CHAPTER THIRTY: Severed

The link snapped.

Not gently, not gradually—it snapped, like a cable under too much tension, and Kaelen's consciousness was ripped from his human body and thrown into darkness.

He woke screaming.

Seri was there, her face pale with fear, her hands gripping his shoulders. "Kaelen! Kaelen, what happened? You were only gone an hour—"

"Thorne." He gasped the word. "He found me. He—" He stopped, his hand flying to his chest. Something was wrong. Something was missing.

The link. He couldn't feel the link.

"They severed it." Vance's voice came from somewhere behind him. She was staring at a readout, her face ashen. "They must have damaged the equipment—or destroyed your human body. Either way, the connection is gone. You can't go back."

Kaelen looked down at his blue hands. His Verathi hands. They were trembling.

"I can't go back," he repeated.

"You're here to stay." Vance met his eyes. "One way or another."

Seri pulled him into her arms, holding him tight. "You're here. That's what matters. You're here with me."

But Kaelen couldn't stop shaking. His human body—broken, paralyzed, miserable as it was—had been his last connection to his old life. Now it was gone. And with it, any chance of walking freely among the humans again.

He was trapped on Verath.

Trapped, and Thorne was coming.
