They almost made it.
Kaelen was the last to retreat, covering the others as they swam for the reef. Ash flew overhead, harrying the pursuing ships, buying them precious seconds. Just a little further. Just—
A bullet found Ash.
The ikran screamed—a sound that tore through Kaelen's soul—and tumbled from the sky, her wings useless, her body broken. She hit the water with a splash and didn't rise.
Kaelen screamed. He swam toward her, fought through the waves, reached her just as she sank beneath the surface. Her eyes were still open. Still watching him. Still loving him.
Then they closed.
"ASH!" His scream echoed across the water, across the battle, across the world. "ASH!"
Hands grabbed him, pulled him away. Seri's face, desperate and fierce. "We have to go! NOW!"
He fought her. He had to go back, had to save Ash, had to—
She slapped him.
"Ash is gone! I'm not! Come WITH ME!"
The reef. The village. The survivors. Seri. They were still there. Still fighting. Still needing him.
Kaelen let her pull him away.
Behind them, Ash's body disappeared beneath the waves.
