Chapter 12 - Chapter 13: Point of No Return

Luo Miao patted Renault on the shoulder. "Life is a vast wilderness, my friend."

"No, life is a mother who whips criminals," Sherlock said with a faint smirk. "I think you should be more worried about the press than the perpetrator, Monsieur Renault."

"Thank you for the reminder, Miss Holmes. I'm afraid I can't have you touring the scene today." Renault led his team in a frantic retreat, charging straight toward the museum.

Sherlock watched the departing police carriage and sighed. "Renault truly is the unluckiest man alive. What kind of criminal is so wicked they'd return the goods untouched?" Beside her, Luo Miao's eyes flickered with guilt. Who knew his demonic subordinates would be so literal-minded? This was effectively a public slap in the face to the British Empire.

Sherlock declined to go to the museum to look at second-hand clues; instead, her suspicious gaze remained pinned firmly on Jiang Anhe. Luo Miao quickly moved to cover her eyes. "Stop being so cryptic, let's go." Sherlock gave her newspaper a wave, intending to investigate those strange "non-theft break-ins" on her own.

On the way back to the warehouse, Jiang Anhe hooked her pinky finger into Luo Miao's. "Why did you help me?" Luo Miao smiled but didn't answer, merely saying it was a secret between them.

Back at the warehouse, Luo Miao transformed into a "vampire boss," using the "indenture contract" to intimidate the girl and using it as an excuse to provide her with only one meal a day. When Jiang Anhe heard that the meal would be "white rice," her eyes instantly brightened like lily-of-the-valley in spring.

Shortly after, Luo Miao received a complaint call from his vampire client, Behemotha. He started off firm, countering her with talk of "natural human rights," before eventually coaxing and deceiving his way through the transaction. Jiang Anhe watched in a daze as he peeled the "Pig Blood" label off a bottle and replaced it with "Demon Blood."

"You dishonest merchant!" the girl hissed under her breath.

Unfazed, Luo Miao began teaching her how to read. He had invented a system he called "Loglish"—a hybrid of Chinese characters and English—which allowed Jiang Anhe to learn at a lightning-fast pace.

At ten o'clock that night, Luo Miao used the excuse of "tutoring fees" to offset the cost of her dinner and locked up to leave, leaving Jiang Anhe behind to wipe away her tears. However, Luo Miao had secretly left half a box of white rice in the cupboard. As Jiang Anhe ate the rice in secret, her perception of "foreigners" began to waver.

Right then, Moriarty appeared punctually within the girl's shadow.

"Luo Miao helped you again today; this is a catastrophe," M whispered with elegant seduction. "If the crime of harboring you is discovered, he will lose his lover and everything he owns. Only by doing exactly as I say can I truly help you."

Jiang Anhe's grip on her dagger tightened, then loosened. Ultimately, to avoid "implicating" Luo Miao, she chose to obey M's command. She leaped from the window once more, vanishing into the moonlit vice of the city.

She thought to herself: If foreigners aren't all bad... then what am I?
