Chapter 1 - INTRODUCTION

The air in the subway station didn't just smell like ozone and old grease; it tasted like bitter copper.

Ren Sato gripped the strap of his messenger bag, his knuckles white. To everyone else, the platform was just crowded. To Ren, it was infested. Small, translucent shapes—like overgrown, weeping cicadas—clung to the shoulders of businessmen and students, whispering anxieties into their ears.

He called them "Static." Most people lived their whole lives without seeing them. Ren hadn't been that lucky since the day his fever broke at age six.

The Incident at Platform 4

The screech of the incoming train muffled a different sound: a low, wet growl coming from the tunnel.

Ren froze. This wasn't Static. Something much larger was unfolding from the ceiling—a mass of tangled limbs and porcelain-white masks that looked like shattered doll faces. It was a Vessel-Eater, a manifestation of the collective fear of being trapped.

"Move!" Ren lunged forward, grabbing a girl by her backpack and yanking her away just as a massive, pale limb slammed into the tiles where she had been standing.

"Hey! What's your problem?!" she yelled, stumbling. She couldn't see the crater in the floor. She couldn't see the monster uncoiling itself, its masks chattering in a dozen different voices.

The Echo Within

Ren knew the rules he'd set for himself: Don't interfere. You aren't a hero. You're just a witness. But the creature was lunging again, and this time, it was targeting a group of kids.

He reached into his bag and pulled out a heavy, rusted iron chain wrapped in sutra-stained parchment—his grandfather's only inheritance.

"By the blood that flows and the breath that binds," Ren whispered, his voice trembling. "Unlock the Kinetic Gate."

A spark of violet energy hissed along the chain. This was Resonance—the ability to turn one's own internal rhythm into a physical force.

As the monster swung, Ren didn't dodge. He lashed the chain outward. The moment the metal hit the creature's skin, the parchment ignited. A shockwave of pure kinetic energy shattered the porcelain masks, sending a spray of black ichor across the tracks.

The Stranger in the Shadows

Ren panted, his lungs burning. The creature dissolved into ash before it could even scream. The commuters were already grumbling about a "power surge" and the "smell of smoke," completely oblivious to the death they had just dodged.

"Not bad for an amateur," a voice drifted from the top of the stairs.

Ren spun around. Standing near the exit was a man in a sharp, charcoal-grey duster. He wasn't looking at Ren; he was looking at the charred marks on the floor. He wore a pair of tinted glasses, despite being underground, and held a folding fan etched with silver circuitry.

"Your Resonance is messy," the man said, finally meeting Ren's eyes. "High output, zero refinement. You're like a pressurized boiler without a valve. Keep playing 'savior' like that, and you'll blow your own heart out before the month is over."

Ren narrowed his eyes, tightening his grip on the chain. "Who are you? Another one of those things?"

The man chuckled, unfolding his fan with a sharp clack. "I'm the guy who's going to make sure you don't take the whole city block with you when you finally pop. My name is Kaito, and I represent the Harmonic Bureau."
