Chapter 87 - Ch 87: Dramatic entrance

A dramatic entrance is often used to establish presence. It is an unspoken declaration that says, "Pay attention." I matter." Heroes do it. Villains do it. Mentors do it. Entire movie industries survive because someone knew the exact moment to walk through a doorway with the perfect soundtrack playing in the background.

Naturally, I decided to do exactly that.

"What are you, seven?" Some might ask that question to mock me. But don't forget, these are the same people who, when night falls and they are scared, shout, "I know you're there," into an empty room after they come from outside—not because they want a confrontation, but because they are too terrified to check if they are truly alone or someone is accompanying them in shades of shadows.

Or putting a brave look in front of your wife or girlfriend when some sound is heard in the middle of the night and you women tell her to check what it is, but you are scared at the same time; you don't want to become small in front of your women either; you desperate to save face so you pretend.

If they can do something dramatic like that, then I can also do something like this also.

With that profound wisdom in mind, I climbed onto the roof of the building where Gojo was speaking with Yuji. The plan was simple. I would leap down elegantly, land perfectly like those Chinese cultivation masters, and perhaps say something mysterious like, "So you're Sukuna's vessel. You didn't disappoint me" and instantly establish myself as an important senior figure.

A flawless strategy, to say the least. Gojo got his fight with Sukuna early; I at least need some of this level. I refuse to fall behind that silver-haired bastard.

Unfortunately, the universe disagreed, as it seems to support Gojo, as the roof tile beneath my foot cracked.

"Oh, son of a—" My balance disappeared like Naoya's mother.

The dramatic leap transformed into an undignified tumble as I rolled down the sloped roof with all the grace of a drunk panda.

BANG!

I crashed directly through the edge of the rooftop and landed flat on my back in front of Yuji and Gojo.

Silence filled the room.

"MMmmmmmm," a strange voice escaped though my mouth.

"..."

"..."

I stared at the ceiling. "Motherfucker," I wheezed.

Yuji's eyes widened. "Are you okay!?" He quickly came running in my direction.

Gojo immediately crouched beside me, somehow looking concerned and entertained at the same time. "Naoya, are you alright?"

I pointed weakly toward the ceiling. "I think..." I paused as a horrifying realization struck me. "...I broke my back."

The pain arrived a second later. "AHHHHHHHHHHH!"

My spine felt twisted in ways the human body had never intended. I was fairly certain several vertebrae had submitted their farewell letters.

Yuji looked horrified. "Shouldn't we call an ambulance!?"

"Don't worry; he has the resilience of a cockroach," Gojo replied. He looked on to me. "Why don't you use the reverse curse technique already?"

"I CAN STILL HEAR YOU, YOU BLIND-FOLDED MENACE! " I shouted before immediately regretting it. "AT LEAST SOUND CONCERNED; IT HURTS! "

----

"I am Naoya." I give Yuji a handshake. I am completely healed from the previous injury. Because of the fall I suffered, I lost all the dignity I was trying to score. When Gojo asked what I was doing on the roof, I had to lie with, 'I imagined something glimmering on the pot tiles, so I climbed up to see what it was. It was either that or staking Principal Yaga's bathroom.

Like hell, I was saying the second one. I didn't even want to imagine the mockery that followed to the end of my grave if I said the latter.

"Yuji Itadori," Yuji uttered his name, studying the senior standing before him with a mix of genuine curiosity and lingering confusion. He had already heard Gojo-sensei dismissively refer to this guy as a "lazy bum," a label that had prepared him for someone perhaps eccentric or overly relaxed.

Yet, standing here now, Naoya seemed like an unexpectedly ordinary person—much like himself, someone who didn't immediately scream 'sorcerer.' However, Yuji was observant, and he quickly noted the uncanny way Naoya's severe injuries, which moments ago had looked agonizing, had vanished entirely in mere seconds.

Despite that carefree, lopsided smile that Naoya wore so easily, it was abundantly clear to Yuji that the man was anything but ordinary; there was a hidden depth and a terrifying level of physical resilience beneath that messy facade that made Yuji wonder exactly what kind of person he had just met.

"I'm your senior, by the way, though our first meeting was rather awkward," I said, scratching the back of my head. Too much for a dramatic entrance, I thought to myself, though I maintained a casual smile despite the lingering sting of embarrassment.

"Are you headed somewhere?" I asked Gojo, who was wearing that same infuriatingly smug expression; I had no doubt he'd be broadcasting my humiliation to anyone who would listen.

"Yes, we were on our way to see Yaga right before you decided to introduce yourself to the concrete," Gojo replied.

I ignored his obvious attempt to bait me into a reaction. "I see. Well, I'd better get going before Yaga shows up and wonders why his roof is missing a tile. Anyway, welcome to Jujutsu High, Itadori."
