The maximum percentage of youth in our country is sitting idle without jobs. They may be Sufficiently qualified but are unemployed. Some of them take to some standard jobs with petty salaries leading their lives in silent despair.
Unemployment may not be a major problem in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi etc but in suburbs and small towns there is widespread desparation amongst the youth.
The problem is also aggravated in areas affected frequently by floods, drought or cyclones.In such areas there are no regular sources of employment. Those employed in fields naturally lose their crops and those in industries are rendered jobless due to devastation by natural calamities.
The population in India is also increasing rapidly .There are not enough jobs at hand to employ the ever increasing numbers. We also adhere to the age old system of education that does not equip the youth in the competitive modern world. There is no focus on vocational training in school and a student has to enrol for separate training elsewhere.This not only wastes the precious years but also demotivates the families who cannot afford to pay for the education of their children.
Mahatma Gandhi's vision of education system for India constituted compulsory primary education for all and vocational training at school level. This would ensure that the youth step out of school as skilled workers and are immediately employed. The system as prescribed by him should be implemented with zeal to ensure that the educational system changes the socioeconomic status of the youth and the nation as a whole . Mechanisation of industries has taken away jobs at the hands of labour and these people are left at the mercy of contractors who pay meagre wages for heavy physical work .There is a need that the government should design policies wherein the wages of daily wage workers are fixed at minimum level. There are many small scale industries at rural levels that needs the skill of the youth in running them.The government needs to adequately advertise such avenues so that the youth is aware of the available opportunities .
Unemployment does not finish at the at this one. Unemployed youth is commiting various crimes , they also run away from their houses or commit suicide in desparation .
Unemployment can be effectively fought with self employment . Youth should be encouraged to find self employment opportunities and the government should readily provide the financial assistance for the same.
