Chapter 1 - The Mysterious Hut and the Jujube Tree

Today I am going to tell you about an incident that happened during my school life. Now I am in the first year of college, but this happened about seven or eight years ago when I was in Class Five. My name is Ritu. My home is in Sharashanka , Gazipur, and my school was in Dantan. The school was very far from my house. Our house was inside the village, near the roadside.

I had three friends — Suchi, Lucy, and Riso. Since the school was far away and we went by bicycle, we used to go only three days a week: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.

Our school was located in a place where there were three different roads after crossing the Dantan railway station gate. One road went through the market, and the other two passed through the Chaulia area. One of those roads was known as "Prem Gali," where couples used to stand and talk. We never took the market road because there was too much traffic. Instead, we used the quieter Chaulia road, where only one or two vehicles would pass occasionally.

On both sides of that road, there were many jujube trees, and the four of us loved eating jujubes very much. The houses along that road mostly belonged to tribal families, and they were beautifully decorated.

There were many jujube trees along the roadside, but near one particular house, there was a special tree. It was surrounded by a fence, and the gate was locked. The tree had fewer leaves but was full of big, yellow jujubes. The house beside it was a small hut. We had never seen anyone there. It seemed completely deserted. There were thick bamboo bushes surrounding the area.

We had looked at the place many times from outside but could never enter because of the lock. One day, the four of us decided that no matter what, we would break the fence and go inside to pick the jujubes. Since no one lived there, we thought no one would say anything.

But what happened next shocked us.

We broke the fence and went inside, happily picking jujubes. Suddenly, a woman came out of the hut. We were completely stunned. We had never seen anyone there before. Was she a human or a ghost? The woman stared at us with big red eyes without saying a word.

Terrified, we ran away.

The next day, when we went to school, the place looked empty again — just like before. A little farther away, we asked a local woman about the house. She told us that no one lived there. A woman had died there two years ago. Her husband occasionally came to check on the place. People said that the dead woman's spirit sometimes appeared, and many had seen her.

We never imagined something like this would happen to us.
