Chapter 17 - The Hidden Passage

Chapter 16 — The Hidden Passage

The mansion was quiet, but Lina's nerves were taut. The events of the past weeks had taught her that every shadow, every whisper, could hold danger. She moved cautiously through the library with Clara, retracing the patterns of the intruder's movements.

"Look here," Clara whispered, pointing at the bookshelf. A faint line ran along the floor, almost invisible in the dim light. "I've noticed it before… someone's been moving this shelf."

Lina's eyes widened. She pressed her fingers along the edges and felt a subtle groove. With a soft push, the shelf shifted, revealing a dark corridor hidden behind it.

Her heart raced. "A passage? Here? In the mansion?"

Clara nodded. "I think the intruder uses it. It explains how they appear and disappear so quickly."

Lina swallowed hard and stepped inside. The corridor was narrow and musty, lined with old stone walls. Faint scratches marred the floor, suggesting frequent use. Someone knew this mansion better than she ever could.

"Be careful," Clara whispered. "We don't know who might be in here right now."

The deeper they went, the colder the air became. Shadows twisted unnaturally along the walls. Every step echoed, making Lina's pulse quicken.

Suddenly, a faint movement caught her eye. A shadow shifted at the far end of the passage. She froze.

"Who's there?" Lina demanded, her voice trembling but loud enough to echo.

No answer. Only silence.

Clara grasped her hand. "We should retreat," she whispered.

Lina shook her head. "No. We need to know what they're planning."

As they advanced, a soft whisper brushed past them:

"You shouldn't be here…"

The words sent a chill down Lina's spine. The shadow moved closer, but before she could react, it disappeared into the darkness, vanishing as if it had never been there.

Lina's hands shook. Her eyes darted around the corridor, trying to catch another glimpse. The intruder had been here — maybe watching, maybe waiting.

Clara's voice was tense. "This passage… it's more than just a shortcut. Whoever uses it knows the mansion better than anyone. They're always one step ahead."

Lina swallowed hard. The truth settled in her chest like a weight: the intruder wasn't just sneaking around for fun. They were planning something, and she and Adrian were in the middle of it.

As they stepped back into the library, Lina glanced once more at the hidden corridor. The shadows seemed to linger, as if promising that this encounter was far from over.

She realized with a shiver: the mansion was no longer just a place of luxury and lessons. It was a labyrinth of secrets, danger, and unseen eyes.

And someone was always watching.
