Chapter 10 - Trying is not a crime

24 June 2019. Peter and Jessica were lying next to each other on the bed. They were dreaming sweet dreams about their possible future and "Just the Facts" with Jay John Jameson! Surprised by the unexpected appearance of his boss in his dream, Parker jumped out of bed.

"Well, well, JJ... What next?" Parker quickly put on his Spider-Man suit and climbed out of the window. "So, how am I going to wake up my sleeping spider beauty? Hmm, I think I have an idea."

Parker returned home with a fresh and incredibly delicious, still hot pizza. The aroma immediately made Jessica open her eyes.

"Oh, pizza burger... I wouldn't mind some of that," said the Author, breaking the fourth wall.

"Man, get out of here, preferably for a long time. Better yet, forever.

"Sorry, sorry, I'm leaving.

Half an hour later. The couple finished breakfast. Peter started repairing Jess's suit while she got ready for work. As they say, if you're not late at Oscorp, you're on time.

"Hey, Peter.

"Just a second," replied Pete, finishing the stitch on the back. "Ta-da! Your suit is ready."

"Wow." Jess was slightly embarrassed. "Thanks..."

"You don't like it?

"No, it's great, I just wanted to ask you...

"Go ahead, of course.

"I wanted to ask you about us... Well, about us... You know what I mean?

"Yes, I understand.

"Tell me... Are we a couple now?

"Hmm..." Parker thought for a moment. "I don't know, Jess. You see, I just broke up with my girlfriend, and we were together for quite a long time. And I don't really want to rush into anything...

"Well, okay..." Jessica replied disappointedly.

"Come on, what's wrong? I'm sorry, I just..." Peter said, hugging her. "If you really want us to be a couple, then... can we give it a try?"

"Really?

"Yeah.

Jess snuggled up to Parker, hugging him. A few tears fell down her cheek. Peter wiped them away and kissed Jess. It seemed like a new story was beginning, and only time would tell where it would lead.

A week later. So, it's been seven days since Jessica and I decided to give our relationship a try. And you know, it's been the most peaceful and enjoyable week I've had in the last ten years... Jess is the most magical person I've ever met. Our typical morning starts with pizza from the best restaurant in New York, then she's at Oskorp and I'm at Bugle with a flexible schedule, followed by heroics in the evening and a well-deserved rest at night.

"Monday is a tough day, isn't it, Pete?" Jess asked.

"That's for sure.

"There's a surprise waiting for you tonight.

"Did I earn it? I hope it's nice?

"You'll find out tonight, Peterrr," Jess said playfully.

Phew! I can't wait for tonight. While you're waiting, let's take a trip to the holy of holies of journalism - the Daily Bugle.

"Jared! Where's the damn broadcast from 31 June?! And why aren't there any ads for my book?!" JJ was in his usual form.

Peter knocked on the door of the most important fact lover's office and, waiting for the book to fly out, entered.

"Mr. Jamison, good morning. I brought some new photos. This time with Spider-Girl and our Friendly Neighbour.

"Two threats in one photo?! Parker, you're a star! Jared!!! Write a cheque for twenty pounds for Parker!

"Only twenty?

"Not a penny more. Take it or leave it.

"Fine, fine, then I won't send any more Spider-exclusives.

"Blackmail, Parker?! Jared!!! Write a cheque for two hundred dollars for Parker, now!

Having received the long-awaited money, a satisfied Peter left the Bugle building and decided to take a walk around the city in "plain clothes." Well, if Jess had prepared a surprise for him, then he had to do something for her.

However, Parker's plans were not meant to be. Another criminal had escaped from prison and was currently wreaking havoc in the city! Pete ran into an alley, quickly changed into his costume, and within a minute, Spider-Man was at the scene of the fight. However, Octopus, his new old acquaintance, was already there. The hero was fighting Smart Guy, better known as Alistair Smythe. The novice hero held his ground, but he didn't have enough experience to deal with such a strong opponent. Less than twenty seconds later, Octopus was knocked out.

"You're heavy, Green!" said Spider, catching him. "Admit it, do you eat metal porridge in the morning?

"Are you completely stupid?

"No, but you are.

Getting to his feet, Octopus did a somersault, dodging the flying poles and other things that heroes like to throw at each other, then landed in superhero style and ran to attack.

"Stop, we need a plan!" shouted Spider-Man.

"What? I thought you weren't a fan of plans.

"Distract him while I take him out.

"No, you distract him, and I'll take him out."

"Calm down, Ink, let's do it my way!

"What did you call me?!"

"Oops, you don't like that, do you?

Octopus swung at Parker, but the blow landed on Smarty's face, who had just run towards the heroes. One accidental but powerful blow knocked Alistair out, and he landed on the asphalt. Peter and Octopus looked at each other, then at Smaite.

"Not a bad punch. Karate? Kung fu? Chi?

"One more question, Spider, and I swear the next punch will be to your face.

"Come on, why so gloomy? By the way, well done, you took care of Smarty on your own, without my help.

"I don't need your thanks.

The heroes scattered in different directions, and the cops who arrived at the scene arrested Alistair. City services were once again busy after the showdown in downtown New York.
