KIERAN
The Enforcer moved.
One second he was fifty feet away. The next his sword was descending toward my head. I barely Shadow Stepped in time. The blade carved through the space where I had been standing and split the stone beneath with a crack like thunder.
"Run!" Thalia screamed.
She was already moving as well with her blade drawn. She intercepted The Enforcer's backswing with a block that should have been impossible for her size. For a second she held against a Level 50 boss with nothing but skill and desperation.
Then her sword shattered.
The blade exploded into fragments and Thalia flew backward from the impact, hitting the ground hard. The Enforcer did not even look at her. His burning eyes stayed locked on me.
"My quarrel is with the demon. Stand aside, elf."
His voice was too calm and sounded like he was reading from a script while committing murder.
I Shadow Stepped again, putting distance between us. My cooldown was fifteen seconds. He closed the gap in two.
"Kieran!" Thalia was back on her feet, broken sword still in hand. "Go! I will distract him!"
"You will die." The Enforcer's tone did not change as he spoke to her finally looking back. "Your interference is noted but irrelevant."
He swung and Thalia rolled under the blade. She was fast but he was faster. His armored boot hit her in the ribs and sent her tumbling across the rocks. She did not get back up.
My health was at 89/380 from the dungeon. Thalia was down. We had zero chance of winning this fight.
So i did the only thing i had been doing since i spwaned into this world. I ran.
The Enforcer followed. Not running exactly but moving with that same speed that ate up distance faster than should be possible. Every time I glanced back he was closer.
I hit him with Hellfire Barrage. The flames washed over his armor and did nothing. His health bar did not even flicker. The level difference was too high. My attacks might as well have been snowballs being thrown at a giant.
"Demon class entities corrupt this world through their very existence." The Enforcer's voice carried across the wasteland. "Eradication is the only solution. Your deletion serves the greater good."
"I'm a person!" I shouted back. "I'm trapped here like everyone else!"
"Irrelevant."
A pillar of white fire erupted in front of me. I veered left and nearly ran off a cliff edge. The drop went down hundreds of feet into a lava flow. Behind me The Enforcer raised his sword and another pillar blocked my retreat.
Trapped. FUCK!
I spun to face him, breathing hard. My health was dropping from the environmental heat. 47/380 and falling.
The Enforcer walked forward slowly. He knew he had won.
"Any final words will be recorded for analysis."
"Yeah." I tried to keep my voice steady. "This game sucks. One star review."
He raised sword. The blade burned so bright I had to look away.
"Demons corrupt this world. Your existence ends."
The sword descended.
A voice whispered in my mind. The same voice from the camp. Female and urgent.
"Jump."
"What?" I was staring at the blade moving toward my skull. "Who—"
"Trust me. Jump. Now!"
The sword was three feet away. Two feet.
I jumped backward off the cliff.
Wind screamed past my ears. The lava rushed up to meet me. I had maybe two seconds before I hit and discovered if game death meant real death.
Something ripped through reality.
A portal opened directly beneath me. Not a circle exactly but a tear in space that looked like broken glass with colors. I fell through it and the world twisted.
I hit solid ground hard enough to knock the wind from my lungs.
Grass that's the first thing i noticed in between coughing.
I was lying on actual grass that smelled like rain and earth. The sky above was blue not the red of the Abyssal Expanse.
Thalia landed next to me a second later. She groaned and rolled onto her back.
"What just happened?" Her voice shook. "Where are we?"
I sat up slowly and looked around. We were in a grove of trees with silver bark and leaves that chimed like bells in the wind. It felt safe. The air was cool and clean and felt like heaven after hours in volcanic heat.
"We went through a portal. Something saved us."
"Something or someone." Thalia clutched her ribs where The Enforcer had kicked her.
"Yeah… that was no random game mechanic."
The voice returned, whispering soft in my head.
"You're interesting, Kieran Chen. The demon who saves elves. The player who chooses mercy over murder. I'll be watching. We'll speak again soon."
I shot to my feet. "Who are you?!"
Silence.
Thalia was staring at me. "Is that the voice you were talking about in camp?"
"You heard it?"
"A woman. She was speaking directly into my thoughts." She touched her temple like she could find the source physically.
"She saved us." I was shaking now that the adrenaline was fading. "Whoever she is, she just saved our lives."
"Or she is manipulating us for unknown purposes." Thalia struggled to stand. "Nothing in Elarion is free. Everything has a cost."
A notification appeared in my vision. Multiple notifications actually, stacking on top of each other.
"Experience gained from Ash Golem Boss: 5000 XP"
"Experience gained from surviving Elite Enemy encounter: 2000 XP"
"LEVEL UP. You are now Level 10."
"LEVEL 10 MILESTONE REACHED"
"CLASS EVOLUTION: OUTCAST DEMON → INFERNAL ADEPT"
"NEW ABILITY UNLOCKED: Wings of Despair (Partial)"
"Height increased. Physical changes applied. Demon traits enhanced."
My body lit up with pain. Not damage pain but transformation pain. I felt my bones shifting, my skin burning. I fell to my knees as the changes tore through me.
When it stopped I was taller. Six feet instead of five nine. My hands were bigger, the nails sharper. I touched my head and felt the horns had grown, no longer nubs but actual curved points.
"Kieran?" Thalia backed away. "Your eyes."
"What about them?"
"They're glowing. Gold like fire."
I checked my character sheet. Corruption: 15%. Higher than before but not that much thankfully. The Wings of Despair ability was listed but grayed out because partial meant I could not fly yet but they would manifest at higher levels.
I was becoming more demon with every level. The question was how much of it was just cosmetic and how much was changing who I actually was.
Thalia watched me with her hand near her broken sword. Ready to fight if I turned on her.
"I'm still me." I met her eyes. "Still the same person who helped you."
"For now." She lowered her hand. "But corruption has stages. I have seen it before. Good people twisted into monsters."
"Then help me stay good."
She studied my face for a long moment. "Very well. But if you become a threat, I will end you myself. Understood?"
"Understood."
The grove was peaceful. Safe. But somewhere out there The Enforcer was still hunting. And somewhere closer, a mysterious voice was watching everything we did.
