Chapter 1 - prologue

Darkness, silence, my heartbeat?

"Where am I?"

My joints hurt too much to feel my lips moving as my eyes darted about.

My mouth felt heavy, almost drowning in something that tasted like iron.

"Where is everyone?"

I sat up to stretch my arms and legs.

My mind was blank, quietly so before I noticed her.

"Mother?" I called out dryly, trying to remember what had happened.

Something warm seeped under my palm, coming from her.

The warm face I remembered, looked cold with blood seeping from the wound in her head.

"What is happening, am I dreaming?"

My hands shook more than my deadened mind tried to speak. The quiet ringing slowly gathering momentum.

I remember my deadbeat of a father grabbing her by the hair, her screams, my siblings teary eyes begging me to do something, before it all went black.

The buzzing bulb slowly ate into the darkness, draining out the frames of bodies it swallowed.

I stood up, my legs almost giving out while I tried to hold onto something.

"Piper, Jordan?" I softly called out, getting silence in return tightened until a bang on the door cut through it.

"Cain! dear boy, open the door!" someone screamed.

"I need to wake up, now"

My eyes were closed but the lifeless bodies in front of me had already etched their frames in my mind

The distant voices echoed with sirens,

fighting to reach me,

until the door burst open with torches that burned their way through the house.

My hand tried to shield my face when they found me.

The voices reaching me, before the strong figures that owned them did.

"Drop the gun! And put your hands behind your back!" One of the men dressed in uniform screamed.

My eyes blurred, the gun was in my hand.

"I did this?" I asked no one in particular

Their widened eyes and quickened breaths gave me an answer I feared to be true

I slowly did as they said.

All I could do was pray to God this was all a nightmare,

A nightmare I needed to end now.

"Would I need a gun to do that?" I muttered out, ignoring the cold stares the officer gave me.

His tightened grip against my back and the cold cuff against my wrist, made me realize I was stuck in this.

"This kid did this?" I heard one of them ask while I was dragged towards the bright light, echoing voices

My home was no a crime scene and I was the culprit, even If I can't remember why.
