Chapter 4 - The Night of Questions

🌙 Part 4: Between Doubt and Trust

The evening air felt heavier than usual.

Elara stood near the quiet side of the campus courtyard, her mind replaying the unknown call again and again.

The silence.

The breathing.

The way Zayn had been watching her afterward.

"Are you going to keep avoiding me?"

His voice came from behind her.

She didn't turn immediately. "I'm not avoiding you."

"Then why does it feel like you are?"

She faced him slowly. This time, there was no teasing smile in her eyes.

"Did you call me?"

The question landed between them.

Zayn frowned slightly. "Call you?"

"Unknown number. Right after Arisha warned me about you."

For a brief second — just a second — something flickered across his face.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Something complicated.

"You think I'd do that?" he asked quietly.

"I don't know what to think."

The honesty surprised even her.

He stepped closer, but kept a respectful distance. His voice lowered, serious now.

"I don't play games like that, Elara."

"Then why does it feel like I'm missing something?"

The wind moved gently around them, carrying distant sounds of laughter from other students. The world felt normal.

But their moment wasn't.

"You notice things," he said softly. "Too many things."

"Because you don't explain anything."

Silence.

Not angry. Not loud.

Just heavy.

"I have my reasons," Zayn said finally. "But none of them are about hurting you."

Her heartbeat slowed slightly at that.

"Then tell me the truth."

He looked up at the darkening sky before answering.

"Not yet."

Frustration flashed across her face. "That's not fair."

"I know."

For a long moment, they simply stood there — caught between doubt and trust.

"I don't want to walk away," he said quietly.

It wasn't dramatic.

It wasn't loud.

But it was real.

Elara searched his eyes — trying to decide if she believed him.

Trust wasn't built in a day.

And secrets weren't erased with soft words.

"Then don't give me a reason to," she replied.

Their shoulders almost touched as they stood under the fading evening light.

No promises.

No confessions.

Just two people deciding — silently — not to let go yet.

Above them, the university sky stretched wide and endless.

And somewhere within that vastness,

their fragile connection held on.
