Chapter 5: The Taste of Friendship
[Scene: Class 1-A - Just Before Lunch]
(Kenta sits at his desk, head in his hands. Dark circles under his eyes. His pen is still moving, but barely.)
Takahashi Kenji: (concerned) "Dude... you okay? You look like death warmed over."
Kenta: (hoarsely) "Professor Hayashi gave me extra problems."
Takahashi Kenji: "The mechanical engineering prof?! The one who eats first-years for breakfast?!"
Kenta: (nodding weakly) "He said I showed 'potential.' Then he handed me this."
(He slides a sheet of paper toward Takahashi. On it are handwritten problems that look like ancient hieroglyphics.)
Takahashi Kenji: (reading aloud, voice getting weaker) "Problem 1: A cantilever beam of length 3m with a varying cross-section... subjected to a distributed load of w(x) = 2x² + 5x kN/m... determine the deflection curve using fourth-order differential equation... Young's modulus 200 GPa... second moment of area varies as I(x) = I₀(1 + x/L)..."
Takahashi Kenji: (turning pale) "What language is this?"
Kenta: "Mechanical engineering. It's like regular math, but sadder."
Takahashi Kenji: (reading the next problem) "Problem 2: A flywheel system with damping coefficient ζ = 0.15... natural frequency ωₙ = 50 rad/s... subjected to forced vibration F(t) = 500 sin(45t) N... determine the steady-state amplitude and phase angle... also calculate the transmissibility ratio..."
Takahashi Kenji: (looking up) "Dude. This is torture."
Kenta: "I've been up since 4 AM solving them."
Takahashi Kenji: "Did you finish?"
Kenta: (holding up pages of calculations) "Just now. My brain is soup."
Takahashi Kenji: "Then why are you still at your desk? Go eat! It's lunch!"
Kenta: (blinking) "Lunch?"
Takahashi Kenji: "Yeah! Food! Sustenance! You remember?"
Kenta: (slowly standing) "I... forgot to bring food."
Takahashi Kenji: (facepalming) "Of course you did. Genius brain, zero survival instincts."

[Scene: School Cafeteria]
(The cafeteria is loud and crowded. Students line up for food, chat at tables, and generally enjoy their break.)
(Kenta walks in, still looking dazed. He stares at the long line for food and sighs.)
Kenta: (muttering) "I'll just wait. Or skip. Skipping is efficient."
(He finds an empty table near the window and collapses into a chair, resting his head on his arms.)

[Scene: Cafeteria Entrance - Moments Later]
(Sui and Yui burst through the doors together, looking around frantically.)
Sui: "Where is he?! Takahashi said he was coming here!"
Yui: "There! By the window! He looks exhausted!"
Sui: (gasping) "KENTA-KUN!"
(Both girls race across the cafeteria, dodging students and trays.)
Student 1: (dodging) "Whoa! Watch it!"
Student 2: "Is that Kenta Morik's harem?"
Student 3: "They're on a mission!"

[Scene: Kenta's Table]
(Kenta is half-asleep when two shadow loom over him.)
Sui: "KENTA-KUN!"
Yui: "WE'RE HERE!"
Kenta: (jolting awake) "Wh—what—"
Sui: (sliding into the seat across from him) "Takahashi told us you forgot food!"
Yui: (sitting next to him, close) "You can't skip meals! Your brain needs fuel!"
Kenta: (rubbing his eyes) "I was going to wait in line."
Sui: "The line is forever! You'd be here all lunch!"
Yui: (pulling out a colorful bento box) "That's why I brought extra!"
Sui: (also pulling out a bento) "Me too!"
(They place two beautifully packed lunches on the table. Steam rises from both.)
Kenta: (staring) "You both... made lunch?"
Sui: (proudly) "Of course! I woke up early to make it special!"
Yui: (smugly) "I've been making bento for years. Mine's probably better."
Sui: "OH IT IS ON!"
Kenta: (confused) "I don't understand what's happening."
Yui: (opening her bento) "Look! I made tamagoyaki! And little sausage octopuses! And rice balls with umeboshi!"
(Her bento is artistic. Little faces on the rice. Vegetables cut into flower shapes.)
Sui: (opening hers) "And I made—" (she stops, looking at Yui's bento, then at hers) "—okay mine doesn't look as pretty."
(Her bento is... rustic. The rice is uneven. The sausages are slightly burnt. But it's clearly made with love.)
Sui: (deflating) "I tried my best..."
Kenta: (looking at both bentos) "They both look good."
Sui: (looking up) "Really?!"
Kenta: "Really. Food doesn't need to be pretty. It needs to be food."
Yui: (pouting) "But mine IS pretty AND food!"
Kenta: "That's also good."
Sui: (brightening) "Kenta-kun! You should try mine first!"
Yui: "No, mine first! I'm childhood friend NUMBER ONE!"
Sui: "I'm childhood friend NUMBER TWO! That's still important!"
Kenta: (head still fuzzy from lack of sleep) "I can... try both?"
Sui & Yui: (in unison) "DEAL!"

[Scene: The Indirect Kiss - Part 1 (Sui)]
Sui: (holding out her chopsticks) "Here! Try the tamagoyaki! I mean, it's a little flat, but—"
Kenta: (reaching for it) "Thanks."
Sui: (pulling back) "Wait! Open your mouth!"
Kenta: (blinking) "What?"
Sui: (face red but determined) "I'll feed you! You look too tired to feed yourself!"
Yui: (gasping) "That's CHEATING!"
Sui: "It's CARING!"
Kenta: "I can use my own hands—"
Sui: "NOPE! MOUTH! OPEN!"
(She holds a piece of tamagoyaki right in front of his lips. Her chopsticks—the ones she's been using—hover there.)
Kenta: (too tired to argue) "...Fine."
(He opens his mouth. Sui gently places the food inside.)
Sui: (watching intently) "Well?! How is it?!"
Kenta: (chewing) "...It's good. A little salty, but good."
Sui: (exploding with joy) "HE LIKED IT! KENTA-KUN LIKED MY COOKING!"
Yui: (watching closely) (thinking) "Those were HER chopsticks. The ones SHE used. That means... that's an indirect—"
(Her eyes widen.)
Yui: (thinking) "INDIRECT KISS!"
(Sui realizes it a second later. Her face turns crimson.)
Sui: (thinking) "MY CHOPSTICKS! IN HIS MOUTH! THAT MEANS—WE—INDIRECTLY—"
(She covers her face with her hands.)
Sui: (muffled) "I didn't think this through."
Kenta: (oblivious) "What's wrong?"
Yui: (grabbing her chopsticks) "MY TURN!"

[Scene: The Indirect Kiss - Part 2 (Yui)]
Yui: (holding out a piece of her tamagoyaki—perfectly golden) "Kenta-kun! Try MINE!"
Kenta: "I can just take it—"
Yui: "NO! Like Sui! Mouth open!"
Sui: (peeking through fingers) "She's doing it too!"
Kenta: (sighing) "This is inefficient."
Yui: "I don't care! OPEN!"
(He opens. She places the food gently. Her chopsticks—her personal ones—touch his lips.)
Yui: (watching intensely) "How is it?!"
Kenta: (chewing) "Sweeter than Sui's. Less salt."
Yui: (triumphant) "HA! Mine's better!"
Sui: (dropping her hands) "IT IS NOT! He said mine was good too!"
Yui: "But mine was SWEETER!"
Sui: "Salt is essential for survival!"
Kenta: (confused) "Why are you both red?"
(They freeze.)
Sui & Yui: (in unison) "WE'RE NOT RED!"
Kenta: "Your faces are very red."
Sui: "IT'S HOT IN HERE!"
Yui: "THE CAFETERIA IS WARM!"
Kenta: "It's air-conditioned."
Sui: "WELL IT'S NOT WORKING!"

[Scene: The Realization]
(Kenta looks down at the chopsticks they both used. Then at their faces. Then back at the chopsticks.)
Kenta: (slowly) "Those are your chopsticks."
Sui: (nervous) "Y-yes?"
Kenta: "You fed me with them."
Yui: (sweating) "W-we did?"
Kenta: "That means..."
Sui: (panicking internally) "He realizes! He realizes!"
Yui: (panicking internally) "Say something! Say something!"
Kenta: "...I used your chopsticks."
Sui: "YES."
Yui: "THAT'S CORRECT."
Kenta: "So technically..."
Sui & Yui: (leaning in) "TECHNICALLY?!"
Kenta: (ears reddening) "...Never mind."
Sui: (grabbing his arm) "NO! FINISH THE THOUGHT!"
Yui: (grabbing his other arm) "WHAT WERE YOU GOING TO SAY?!"
Kenta: (looking away) "It's nothing."
Sui: "HIS EARS ARE RED!"
Yui: "HE KNOWS!"
Kenta: (muttering) "Indirect kiss. I know what it is."
Sui: (screaming internally) "HE SAID IT! HE SAID THE WORDS!"
Yui: (screaming internally) "INDIRECT KISS! WITH ME! AND SUI!"
Kenta: (trying to focus on the remaining food) "Can we eat now?"
Sui: (still gripping his arm) "I—yes—food—eating—"
Yui: (also gripping) "Right—food—consumption—"
(They both grab their bentos and start eating furiously, trying to hide their faces.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Two indirect kisses. Before lunch even started. What is my life."
(He takes another bite of Sui's food. Then Yui's. He doesn't comment, but his ears stay red.)

[Scene: Meanwhile - Takahashi Watching from Afar]
(Takahashi sits at a nearby table with other students, watching the scene unfold like a nature documentary.)
Takahashi Kenji: (to the students around him) "See that? The girls are feeding him. With their own chopsticks."
Student 1: "That's an indirect kiss!"
Student 2: "TWO indirect kisses?!"
Student 3: "In one lunch period?!"
Takahashi Kenji: (wiping a tear) "Our boy is growing up. I'm so proud."
Student 1: "You're weird."
Takahashi Kenji: "I'm a WITNESS to history!"

[Scene: Back at Kenta's Table]
(The initial embarrassment has faded into a comfortable rhythm. The three of them share food back and forth.)
Sui: (holding out a piece) "Try the sausage! I didn't burn it this time!"
Kenta: (taking it with his own chopsticks now) "Progress."
Sui: (beaming) "I'm learning!"
Yui: (holding out a flower-shaped carrot) "And this! I cut it myself!"
Kenta: (taking it) "Impressive."
Yui: (smug) "I'm talented!"
Sui: "Don't let it go to your head!"
Yui: "Too late!"
(They continue sharing. Kenta eats from both bentos, mixing flavors.)
Kenta: (thinking) "This is... nice. Sharing food. Not eating alone."
(He glances at both girls. They're arguing about whose rice ball is better.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Loud. Chaotic. But nice."
Sui: (noticing his look) "Kenta-kun? You okay?"
Kenta: "Yeah. Just tired."
Yui: (concerned) "You should rest after lunch!"
Sui: "Yeah! We'll protect you while you nap!"
Kenta: "Protect me from what?"
Sui: "From... people! Who bother tired geniuses!"
Yui: "We're your bodyguards now!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "I don't need bodyguards."
Sui: "Too late! Appointment already made!"
Yui: "Non-refundable!"
Kenta: "You didn't pay anything."
Sui: "We paid with EMOTIONS!"
(Kenta shakes his head, but there's definitely a smile tugging at his lips.)

[Scene: Cafeteria - Later]
(Lunch is ending. Bentos are empty. Kenta looks more energized.)
Sui: (stretching) "That was fun! We should do this every day!"
Yui: "Agreed! Shared lunches forever!"
Kenta: "I can bring my own food."
Sui: "NO!"
Yui: "ABSOLUTELY NOT!"
Sui: "We WANT to share!"
Yui: "It's our duty as childhood friends!"
Kenta: "Duty?"
Sui: "YES! Duty! Very important!"
Yui: "Sacred, even!"
Kenta: (sighing) "Fine. But I'm paying you back somehow."
Sui: (grinning) "You can pay us with company!"
Yui: "And smiles!"
Sui: "And red ears!"
Kenta: "The ears are not voluntary."
Yui: (giggling) "That's what makes them cute!"
Kenta: (ears reddening further) "..."
Sui: (pointing) "THERE THEY ARE!"
Yui: (laughing) "Told you!"

[Scene: Empty Hallway - After Lunch]
(The three walk together toward their next classes.)
Sui: "So Kenta-kun... those engineering problems you solved... were they really hard?"
Kenta: "Yes."
Yui: "Like... impossibly hard?"
Kenta: "For most people, yes."
Sui: (in awe) "And you solved them in one morning?"
Kenta: "I had to. Professor Hayashi expects results."
Yui: "Our Kenta-kun is amazing!"
Sui: "THE best!"
Kenta: "I just study a lot."
Sui: "Don't downplay it! You're a genius!"
Yui: "A genius who now has two childhood friends feeding him!"
Sui: "The perfect life!"
Kenta: (muttering) "My life is chaos."
Sui: "Beautiful chaos!"
Yui: "Chaos with indirect kisses!"
Sui: (elbowing her) "YUI!"
Yui: (whispering) "What?! It's true!"
Kenta: (ears red again) "I can hear you."
Sui & Yui: (in unison) "WE KNOW!"
(They reach the junction where their classes split.)
Sui: "See you after school, Kenta-kun! Library!"
Yui: "Don't you dare study alone!"
Kenta: "I won't. Apparently."
Sui: (grinning) "Good!"
Yui: (blowing a kiss) "Bye bye!"
Sui: (also blowing a kiss) "See you!"
(Kenta watches them run off. Then touches his cheek where the blown kisses technically landed? Maybe? He's not sure how that works.)
Kenta: (muttering) "Two indirect kisses. Two blown kisses. In one lunch."
(He shakes his head.)
Kenta: "Professor Hayashi's problems were easier to solve than those two."
(But he's smiling as he walks to class.)

[Scene: Class 1-A - Afternoon]
(Kenta sits at his desk, looking more awake. Takahashi leans over immediately.)
Takahashi Kenji: "SO?!"
Kenta: "So what?"
Takahashi Kenji: "The cafeteria! The feeding! The INDIRECT KISSES!"
Kenta: "How do you know about that?"
Takahashi Kenji: "I WAS THERE! WATCHING! LIKE A PROUD FATHER!"
Kenta: "That's weird."
Takahashi Kenji: "It's SUPPORT! So tell me everything! How did it feel?!"
Kenta: (thinking) "...Warm."
Takahashi Kenji: "WARM?!"
Kenta: "The food was warm. And they were... caring. It was nice."
Takahashi Kenji: (grabbing his shoulders) "KENTA! You just described EMOTIONS! Real emotions about GIRLS!"
Kenta: "I always had emotions."
Takahashi Kenji: "Not about THIS you didn't!"
Kenta: (pausing) "...Maybe not."
Takahashi Kenji: (tearing up) "My boy is growing up! First indirect kisses! Soon, direct kisses! Then marriage! Then—"
Kenta: "Stop. You're spiraling."
Takahashi Kenji: "I'm CELEBRATING!"

[Scene: Kenta's Room - Night]
(Kenta lies in bed, staring at the ceiling. He touches his lips unconsciously.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Indirect kisses. Sui's chopsticks. Yui's chopsticks. Both in my mouth."
(He covers his face with his blanket.)
Kenta: (muffled) "Why is this so complicated."
(He thinks about their faces. Their smiles. The way they argued over whose food was better.)
Kenta: (uncovering his face) "...But it was nice. Not eating alone."
(He reaches for his phone. A text from Sui:)
Sui's Text: "Kenta-kun! Sleep well! Tomorrow I'll make even BETTER food! No burnt sausages this time! (maybe) "
(A text from Yui:)
Yui's Text: "Kenta-kun~ thanks for sharing lunch with us! Tomorrow I'll make something extra special! Just for you! "
Kenta: (staring at the messages) "They're both so... much."
(He types back:)
Kenta's Text (to both): "Thank you. The food was good. Sleep well."
(Almost immediately, two replies:)
Sui: "KENTA-KUN SAID GOOD NIGHT! "
Yui: "SWEET DREAMS KENTA-KUN! "
Kenta: (smiling despite himself) "Chaos."
(He puts the phone down and closes his eyes.)
Kenta: (thinking) "But my chaos."
