Chapter 2 - The Taste of Vengeance and the First Evolution

Chapter 2: The Taste of Vengeance and the First Evolution

The heavy oak door of the Frost Manor dungeon groaned, protesting against the unnatural force that Kai now possessed. Standing amidst the corpses of the two guards he had just slaughtered, Kai didn't feel like the broken slave boy he was just minutes ago.

"The hunters become the prey," he whispered, his voice deep and echoing with an ancient, forbidden tone. He looked at his hands, which were now pulsing with a faint, obsidian light. The shadows around him seemed to twist, reaching out toward him like loyal subjects to their king.

He stepped out of the cell, into the narrow, damp corridor. The air was thick with the scent of mold, rusting iron, and now, fresh blood. His new [System] interface flickered in the periphery of his glowing eyes.

[Quest Active: Escape the Frost Manor.]

Progress: Dungeon Exit (0/1).

Estimated Enemy Strength: Level 3-15 Guards, Level 20 Mage (Young Master).

Kai felt a chill, not from fear, but from cold calculation. "A Level 20 Mage... I'm only Level 3."

He began to move. His stats—Strength, Agility, Intelligence—were now far beyond any normal human, even some low-level warriors. He ran, his steps nearly silent, blurring across the stones. The darkness around him felt not like a barrier, but like a shroud, actively hiding him from view. This was a passive effect of his [Ancient Soul].

Suddenly, he heard voices and the clanking of armor. Three guards were patrolling the upper level of the dungeon, near the exit. One of them held a torch.

"Hey, Grog and the other idiot haven't come back yet," one guard grumbled. "Did that slave brat actually manage to—"

His sentence died in his throat. A blur of shadow exploded from the stairs. Kai appeared, not with a weapon, but with his bare, claw-like hands. He drove his fist into the first guard's chest armor. BOOM. The metal crumpled like paper, and the guard was sent flying backward, breaking his spine against the far wall.

[You have killed a Level 6 Guard!]

[70 EXP Gained.]

The second guard, a Level 8 leader with a longsword, reacted. "Intruder! Attack!" He swung his blade, a standard warrior technique: [Vertical Slash].

Kai laughed—a sound that was ancient and terrifying. He didn't dodge. With his increased Agility and the instinctual knowledge granted by his Ancient Soul, he caught the longsword mid-swing with his bare hand. The blade shrieked against his skin, but it couldn't cut him. His [Vitality] had been boosted by the souls he had devoured.

"Impossible!" the guard gasps.

Kai twisted the blade, snapping it. He then grabbed the guard's face, his fingers sinking into the skin.

"Let me show you impossible," Kai said, channeling his mana into his unique skill.

[Soul Devourer Activated!]

The guard's eyes went wide, not from physical pain, but from a terrifying, spiritual void. He felt his memories, his strength, his very essence being RIPPED from his body. A vortex of dark, chaotic energy flowed from the guard's face and into Kai's chest. The guard's body shriveled, turning gray and lifeless in seconds.

[You have killed a Level 8 Guard (Leader)!]

[150 EXP Gained.]

[Soul Essence Absorbed. Status Increased: Strength +3, Vitality +2, Mana +5!]

The sensation was more than intoxicating; it was an addiction. Kai felt a rush of raw power that was almost too much for his current body to handle. His muscles expanded slightly, and his skin hardened.

[Level Up!]

[You are now Level 4.]

The third guard, Level 3, had dropped his sword and was scrambling away. "M-Monster! Someone help!" He reached the dungeon exit door and began to pull the lever to raise the portcullis.

"No, you don't," Kai grunted. He couldn't let the alarm be raised before he was ready. He looked at the mace he had taken from the dungeon cell. He focused his newly increased Strength and threw it.

The mace blurred through the air and struck the guard square in the back of the head just as the door cracked open. CRUNCH.

[You have killed a Level 3 Guard!]

[40 EXP Gained.]

Kai reached the body and repeated the process. [Soul Devourer].

[Agility +1, Strength +1 gained.]

He had cleared the dungeon. He pushed open the heavy wooden door, stepping out into the grounds of the Frost Manor.

Above him, the moon was huge and crimson, mirroring the new light in his eyes. The manor grounds were massive, with well-kept gardens and stone pathways leading to the main house. Torches lined the walls, and he could see more guards patrolling. In the distance, the main manor was lit up—the Young Master's party was still going on.

[New Active Quest: The Path of Blood.]

Objective: Devour 10 more souls to unlock your first Class Skill.

Warning: The Young Master is a Level 20 Frost Mage. If he detects your mana, your chances of survival are less than 5%.

Kai crouched in the shadows of a large oak tree. "Ten more souls. That will make me Level 5, maybe Level 6. I need to be smarter."

He moved toward a group of four guards patrolling the outer perimeter. These were Level 5-7. He used his new [Agility] and the [Passive Shadow Camouflage] of his soul to get close.

This wasn't a fight. It was a harvest.

He appeared behind the first guard, snapping his neck before the others could register a sound. [Soul Devourer]. Slurp.

He blurred to the next, driving his fist through the heart. [Soul Devourer]. Slurp.

The last two noticed, but it was too late. He used the shadow blade he had summoned earlier, cutting them down in quick, brutal strokes. [Soul Devourer], [Soul Devourer].

[You are now Level 5!]

[Progress: 4/10 Souls Devoured.]

The souls of the guards were fueling a profound transformation. His [Ancient Soul] was not just giving him stats; it was evolving. The forbidden knowledge was unlocking. He could feel it in his blood, a language he didn't know but now understood.

He moved toward the main manor. He needed stronger souls. He needed the Young Master. But a Level 20 mage was too powerful. Mages have sensory skills; they can detect mana flow.

"I need a distraction," Kai muttered, looking at the large, dry wooden stable near the manor.

Suddenly, a System notification flashed, larger and redder than before.

[WARNING!]

[Anomaly Detected: An ancient seal, identical to your own, has been activated within the manor!]

[The Primordial Devourer's echo has been felt.]

Kai froze. "Another... ancient soul? Here?"

He could feel it now—a faint resonance, a vibration in his very soul that was identical to his own power, but weaker. It was coming from the Young Master's private chambers.

[Unique Quest Triggered: The Soul Resonance.]

Objective: Reach the source of the resonance and devour the ancient soul fragment.

Reward: Primary Soul Merge, Class Advancement to [Void Monarch Apprentice], Skill: [Void Step - Unique].

** penalty for Failure:** Soul Collapse (Death).

The stakes had just been raised. This wasn't just about escaping anymore. This was about becoming whole. He didn't just want to survive; he wanted to reclaim.

The stables were now a secondary thought. He blurred toward the manor, no longer caring about stealth for the lower-level guards. He had to get to that chamber.

He cut down another three guards on the manor porch, bringing his total to 7/10 souls. He was now Level 6. He burst through the main doors, into the grand, torch-lit hallway. Nobles screamed, dropping their wine glasses, as a figure of obsidian and crimson light, eyes glowing like a nightmare, charged through the crowd.

He didn't stop. He was a force of nature. He leaped up the grand staircase, toward the top floor.

He reached the Young Master's heavy, gold-encrusted double doors. He didn't even slow down. He kicked them open with a strength that shattered the hinges.

Inside, the room was vast and luxurious. In the center, a circle of icy runes glowed. And in the center of the circle was the Young Master, Level 20 Frost Mage, his hands raised, chanting a complex spell.

Floating above the icy runes was a shard of pure, pulsating void-black energy, identical to the light in Kai's own chest.

The Young Master stopped his chant and looked at Kai. His expression, however, was not one of fear. It was a twisted, hungry smile.

"Ah," the Young Master said, his voice as cold as ice. "So you've finally come. I was wondering when the primary body would present itself. The [Forbidden System] told me you would come."

[System Notification!]

[Warning: Enemy has been confirmed to possess a secondary 'Devourer System' fragment. Synchronization Level: 15%.]

Kai's world tilted. The Young Master... he had a system too?

"Thank you, slave," the Young Master laughed, the ice runes glowing brighter. "For leveling up for me. Your stats will make me a god. But first..."

With a wave of his hand, the Young Master summoned a torrent of icy shards that coalesced into a giant, spiked frost golem.

"Meet my [Frost Titan - Level 25 summon]." The Young Master's eyes flashed with a cold, blue light. "Now, give me your soul!"

The massive frost golem roared and lunged at Kai.
