Chapter 4 - **Chapter 4: The Path to a Ring**

Arjun Reddy remained frozen on the edge of the bed, the rented studio apartment in El Segundo feeling smaller than ever. The blue panel of the Basketball Role Play System hovered unwaveringly in his vision, the three role options glowing with an almost mocking intensity. Scorer. Allrounder. Defender. Each one promised power, but only one could shape the legacy he refused to waste this time.

He rubbed his temples, mind racing through the ghosts of his first life. Back then, he had been a scorer at heart—flashy threes, quick buckets, the kind of guy who lit up highlight reels but disappeared when the game demanded more. In college and his brief NBA stint with the Lakers, he had chased points like they were the only currency that mattered. Twenty-point nights felt like validation, but when defenses adjusted, when double-teams came and the ball stopped moving, he had nothing else to offer. No vision. No rebounding presence. No defensive anchor. That was why the front office had cut him in 2024. Talent without completeness was just noise. And noise didn't win rings.

The system remained silent for a long moment, as if sensing his turmoil. Then new text materialized beneath the options, crisp and clinical, like a coach breaking down film:

**Additional System Clarification Unlocked**

**Role Limitations & Upgrade Path**

- **Scorer Role**: Pure offensive output. You will score exactly 25 points per game with 100% accuracy on all shot attempts until the cap is reached. After 25 points, scoring ceases for that game. No guaranteed assists, rebounds, steals, or blocks. Your impact is limited to the scoreboard—defenses will adjust, and you cannot contribute beyond scoring.

- **Allrounder Role**: Complete versatility within balanced limits. You will deliver 7 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 combined steals + blocks per game with 100% consistency. You retain full freedom to play basketball normally—shoot more if the flow demands it, pass extra, crash boards, or lock down on defense. The guarantees provide a reliable floor; greatness comes from how you build upon them.

- **Defender Role**: Elite lockdown specialist. You will record 4 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 8 combined steals + blocks per game with 100% consistency. Primary matchups assigned to you will see their field-goal percentage drop by at least 20%. You can block shots at the rim and deny perimeter players effectively. However, offensive output remains minimal unless you exceed the floor through natural play.

**Upgrade Note**: Any role can be upgraded or switched after your team secures 30 wins with you in the rotation. Upgrades unlock advanced skill trees, attribute point allocation, and role-hybrid capabilities. Consistency is guaranteed only while embodying the chosen role.

Arjun exhaled sharply. The clarifications hit like a coach's whiteboard session—brutal, honest, and necessary. Scorer sounded tempting on paper: 25 points every night, a guaranteed highlight machine. He could see the headlines already—"Reddy Drops 25 in Rookie Debut." But he knew the trap. In the NBA, pure scorers got schemed out of games. Playoff defenses would clog lanes, force turnovers, and leave him isolated while the team suffered. He had lived that emptiness once. No thanks.

Defender appealed to the grinder in him—the kid from Hyderabad who had learned to fight for every loose ball on cracked concrete courts. Shutting down stars like Curry or Durant, anchoring the paint like a young Draymond Green or Rudy Gobert… that would earn respect. Rings were won on defense, everyone knew that. But 4 points a night? He remembered the sting of being invisible on offense, of watching teammates carry the load while he played the role of specialist. His parents deserved to see their son shine, not just survive.

Allrounder. The middle path. It didn't scream stardom like the Scorer option, nor did it promise shutdown dominance like Defender. But 7-5-5 with 4 stocks per game—that was the floor of a young LeBron James or Nikola Jokić in their early years. The system promised he could do *more* if the game called for it. Shoot when hot. Facilitate when teammates were open. Crash the glass on both ends. Switch on defense. It was the role of a true basketball player, not just a specialist. The kind of player who elevated everyone around him. The kind of player who won championships.

Arjun stood and paced the small room, the wooden floor creaking underfoot. He thought about the Lakers roster waiting for him in training camp—LeBron James, the ultimate all-around king, still chasing rings in his late thirties; Anthony Davis, a defensive monster who could also drop 30. They didn't need another one-dimensional scorer clogging the offense. They needed someone who could fit, who could contribute in every phase, who could grow into a piece that made the whole machine unstoppable.

He thought about the bigger picture too. The NBA was evolving. Positionless basketball. Stars who defended, passed, and scored in equal measure. The 2021 draft class he had just joined—Cade Cunningham, Jalen Green, Scottie Barnes—they were all versatile threats. If he wanted to carve a legacy that lasted beyond one hot streak, he needed to be that player. And more than anything, he wanted rings. Not individual awards. Not scoring titles. Rings. For the family back in Hyderabad who had given up everything. For the kids at the school in India who would one day watch his highlights and believe they could make it too. For the boy who had died regretting a wasted life.

"Championships aren't built by scorers who disappear in the fourth quarter," he muttered to the empty room, echoing words he had once heard from a veteran in his first life. "They're built by players who show up every night, in every category."

The decision crystallized. No more chasing empty stats. This second life was about winning.

Arjun faced the glowing panel and spoke with quiet conviction.

"I choose Allrounder."

The system responded instantly. The three options dimmed. Golden text erupted across the blue screen:

The panel pulsed once, then faded to a soft standby glow in the corner of his vision. Arjun felt a subtle warmth spread through his muscles—like his body had just been tuned to a higher frequency. He flexed his fingers, already imagining the feel of the ball in summer league. This wasn't about being the flashiest rookie. This was about becoming the player no team could beat.

He grabbed his phone and opened the notes app, typing out a simple reminder for tomorrow: *Morning run. Film study. Call home.* The grind started now.

Outside, the Los Angeles night hummed with distant traffic. Inside the quiet apartment, Arjun Reddy smiled for the first time since rebirth. The second chance wasn't just a gift. It was a blueprint.
