Chapter 1 - Material Fatigue Point

The hot sun above Tianhe City, Guangzhou, resembled a dimmed copper plate, tainted by the haze of pollution and dust particles from motorcycles and cars scattered in the air. Beneath that oppressive sky, a building called The Phoenix Tower soared through the clouds, its ambitious 110 floors. To most, it was an architectural marvel, but to Yoe Choin, it was a daily, highly stressful battlefield.

"The hydraulic pressure on crane number 4 is already excessive! Reduce the load by fifteen percent, or we'll lose our balance in a split second!" Choin's voice boomed over the radio, cutting through the din of the concrete mixers humming low below.

Choin stood at the edge of the still-open 85th floor, bare of protective walls. A strong wind buffeted his dingy vest, carrying the pungent scent of diesel fuel and wet cement, but his feet remained unwavering. To him, this building was more than just a pile of dead concrete; it was a complex, interconnected mass of materials, with tension flows, load points, and a nervous system of thousands of meters of steel cables.

With a single glance, his eyes could detect strange things that even lasers couldn't even microcracks in the main support columns. That was the "Foreman's Eye," a legendary technical instinct that earned him both respect and fear in Chinese construction.

"Mr. Choin! There's a problem with the hoist on the ninetieth floor! A new worker is trapped in the load path!" shouted a panicked voice over the radio.

Choin's eyes widened. Up above, a giant seven-ton I-Beam steel beam swung wildly, swayed by the sudden, ferocious winds. Under the shadow of the massive steel beam, ready to take his life, a young man stood frozen, frozen with terror that locked his joints.

"Idiot! Run to the safe zone now!" Choin threw down his radio and ran toward the emergency stairs at lightning speed.

Every step he took was the result of cold mechanical calculation. With winds reaching 45 knots and the weight of the swinging load, he knew mathematically that the steel sling had less than twelve seconds before it reached its point of material fatigue.

Choin reached the ninetieth floor just as the terrifying "PING" of the steel cables snapping one by one shook the air around him.

Without hesitation, Choin stepped forward. Using all the force of his body, he slammed into the new worker, pushing him into the gap between the tall, sturdy concrete pillars. However, for Choin, the laws of physics knew no such thing as being late.

The world seemed to slow down into a series of still image fragments. Choin looked up, staring at the giant steel bar falling toward him at an unfathomable speed. In his final seconds, he saw no glimpses of the past or the grim reaper. As a foreman, his eyes were fixed on a single, structural anomaly above.

"That bolt connection should have been grade 10.9, not 8.8..." he thought, closing his eyes.

The sound of metal hitting the concrete floor ended everything, sending Yoe Choin's consciousness into the pure darkness that engulfed Guangzhou.
