Vera's gaze moved to Mason, then Victor, who had made his way to my side. Roland and Dylan stood close together, their expressions promising nothing pleasant. Jasper was somewhere in the crowd, looking entirely too comfortable for a man standing in the middle of a temple full of enemies.
Blake. Jake. Fiona. Abigail. Erica. The rest of my family.
And lining the walls, the demon soldiers I'd brought from the palace.
Vera took it all in.
The color drained from her face in a single breath.
For one beautiful moment, there was no performance. No clever words. No practiced smile. Just naked, instinctive terror—the look of someone who had walked into her own home and discovered that every nightmare she'd ever entertained had gathered there to greet her.
Her hand flew to her throat.
