Chapter 7 - Chapter 6: The Poisoned Chalice and the Saintess’s Lament

Chapter 6: The Poisoned Chalice and the Saintess's Lament

The Royal Palace of the Hung Kingdom was a monument to excess. Its white marble pillars were inlaid with gold leaf, and the air was thick with the scent of "Thousand-Year Orchid" incense—a fragrance so expensive that a single breath of it cost more than a commoner's monthly wage.

But as Tian Mo walked up the grand staircase, his 1-Star Supreme Teacher robes flowing behind him, he didn't see beauty. He saw a structural nightmare.

[Ding! Scanning Royal Palace...]

[Detection: 4,800 structural flaws. The eastern wing is sinking by 0.2 millimeters every year due to a weak foundation.]

[Detection: 12 hidden traps. Poisoned needles in the third chandelier.]

Tian Mo's expression remained a mask of icy indifference. Behind him, the nine students were absent—he had ordered them to stay in the Dragon-Vein Chamber to consolidate their "10x Foundation." Instead, he was flanked by a Presence that no one could see: Shadow Guard #1, lurking in the literal darkness cast by Tian Mo's own body.

"Teacher Tian," a voice called out.

Princess Mo Ling descended the stairs, her red-and-gold armor replaced by a silk gown that flowed like liquid rubies. The transformation from a fierce warrior to a Regal Beauty was enough to stop the hearts of every nobleman in the hall, but Tian Mo's pulse didn't even skip a beat.

"You are late," she noted, her emerald eyes scanning his simple attire. "The King has already begun the toast."

"The toast can wait," Tian Mo replied, his voice a low, resonant baritone. "The 'National Heroes' you are celebrating are currently breathing in air that has been laced with 'Numbing Powder'. It seems your Royal Palace is as porous as a sieve."

Mo Ling's face went pale. "Numbing powder? That's impossible. The Royal Alchemists check the ventilation every hour."

"Then your Alchemists are either blind or on the payroll," Tian Mo said, stepping past her. "Lead the way, Princess. I want to see this 'Dark Physician' you've invited to dinner."

The Banquet of Shadows

The Great Hall was a sea of shimmering silk and clinking jade. At the head of the table sat King Mo Zhen, a man whose face was a map of past battles, though his eyes currently looked glazed.

To the King's left sat a woman who seemed to radiate a moonlight of her own. She was dressed in white robes so pure they seemed to repel the very dust of the room. A veil covered the lower half of her face, but her eyes—calm, compassionate, and infinitely deep—marked her as the Saintess of the Myriad Hearts, Su Qingyuan.

She was a 2-Star Physician and the 2nd Wife-to-be (though neither knew it yet).

"And here is the man of the hour!" the King announced, his voice booming but slightly slurred. "The teacher who turned 'Trash' into 'Gold'. Step forward, 1-Star Supreme Teacher Tian Mo!"

The nobles turned, their gazes filled with envy and suspicion. How could a man from the Grade E block achieve such a rank overnight?

Tian Mo walked to the center of the hall. He didn't bow. He stood straight, his gaze meeting the King's.

"Your Majesty," Tian Mo said. "The wine in your glass has a flaw. If you drink it, your Dantian will collapse within three breaths."

The hall went deathly silent. A nobleman dropped his fork, the silver clattering loudly on the marble.

"Sacrilege!" a man stood up from the King's right. He was dressed in black physician robes with a 2-Star badge. This was High Physician Lu, the man Tian Mo had identified in his quest log. "You dare accuse the Royal Kitchen of regicide? Your Majesty, this man is a charlatan who uses fear to gain influence!"

Su Qingyuan, the Saintess, looked at the wine glass. She leaned forward, her delicate nose twitching slightly. "Physician Lu is right, I detect no poison. The wine is 'Cloud-Mist' vintage, aged for fifty years. It is pure."

Tian Mo looked at the Saintess. For the first time, his gaze softened—not with romance, but with the recognition of a soul that was truly seeking the truth, albeit limited by its current knowledge.

"Saintess Su," Tian Mo said. "You are looking for 'Poison'. You should be looking for 'Reaction'. The wine is indeed pure. The glass, however, was washed in 'Sun-Dry' salt. When the wine's acidic Qi touches the salt's alkaline residue, it creates a gaseous compound that paralyzes the heart-valve."

He turned back to High Physician Lu. "You knew this, didn't you, Lu? It's a technique from the 'Dark Physician' manual—invisible to the senses, lethal to the soul."

"Lies!" Lu roared. "Your Majesty, permit me to execute this slanderer!"

The Logic of Death

Tian Mo didn't wait for the King's permission. He walked to the table and picked up a piece of bread. He dipped it into the King's wine and then threw the bread toward a decorative bird in a gilded cage nearby.

The bird ate the bread.

One second. Two seconds.

On the third second, the bird didn't die. Instead, its feathers turned a brilliant, sickly neon green, and it began to sing a song that sounded like a human screaming. Then, it dissolved into a puddle of grey sludge.

The Queen Mother screamed. The guards drew their swords.

"The 'Green Scream' reaction," Su Qingyuan whispered, her eyes wide with horror. She looked at Tian Mo as if seeing him for the first time. "I... I read about this in a forbidden scroll. It was thought to be a myth."

"In your hands, it is a myth," Tian Mo said to the Saintess. "In my eyes, it is a basic chemical flaw."

High Physician Lu realized he was trapped. He didn't plead for mercy. His eyes turned black—a sign of Demonic Cultivation.

"If the King won't die by wine, he will die by my hand!" Lu shouted. He lunged across the table, his fingers transforming into blackened claws dripping with corrosive Qi. He was a Foundation Establishment - Level 5 master.

The guards were too far. The King was too intoxicated.

Tian Mo didn't move. He didn't even raise a hand.

"Shadow," Tian Mo whispered.

From the darkness beneath the banquet table, a hand made of pure obsidian reached up. It grabbed High Physician Lu's ankle mid-air.

CRUNCH.

The sound of bone shattering echoed through the hall. Lu was slammed into the floor with the force of a falling meteor. The Shadow Guard didn't emerge fully; it remained a silhouette, pinning the Dark Physician to the ground.

Tian Mo walked over to the struggling man. He looked down at him with the coldness of a judge.

"You have seventeen flaws in your demonic heart-core," Tian Mo said. "If I press my heel here..."

He tapped a point on Lu's chest.

"Your Qi will reverse."

"NO—!"

Pffft.

Lu's body didn't explode; it simply deflated. His demonic Qi hissed out of his pores like steam from a kettle, leaving him a shriveled, powerless husk.

The Saintess's Request

The palace guards rushed in, dragging the shriveled High Physician away. The King, now sobered by the shock, sat trembling.

"Teacher Tian..." the King gasped. "You have saved my life. Ask for anything. Gold, land, titles..."

"I have no interest in land," Tian Mo said, his eyes scanning the room. "But your Royal Vault has twelve 'High-Grade Spirit Essence' stones. They are being used as paperweights in the library. I want them."

The King blinked. "Paperweights? Those are the most precious stones in the Kingdom! But... yes. They are yours."

As the banquet dissolved into a frantic cleanup, Su Qingyuan, the Saintess, approached Tian Mo. She moved with a grace that suggested she was floating.

"Teacher Tian," she said, bowing her head. "I have spent my life studying the healing arts, yet I was blind to the 'Green Scream'. My master always said that the greatest flaw is one's own arrogance. Today, you have shown me mine."

Tian Mo looked at her.

[Scanning Subject: Su Qingyuan.]

[Condition: Pure Heart / Cursed Soul.]

[Detection: A 'Death-Seal' placed on her heart by the Otherworldly Demonic Tribe.]

Tian Mo's heart (or what was left of it) felt a slight tug. Not out of love, but out of a teacher's instinct to fix what is broken.

"Your heart-seal is vibrating, Saintess," Tian Mo said quietly, so only she could hear. "In three months, it will bloom. When it does, you will become a puppet for the Dark Tribe."

Su Qingyuan froze. Her veil fluttered. "How... how could you know? Not even the High Priest could see it."

"I don't see things, Saintess. I see the mistakes in their design," Tian Mo said. "Come to the Celestial Sage Academy tomorrow. Bring the '10x Spirit Essence' stones the King promised. I will show you how to rewrite your own fate."

She looked into his eyes and saw not a man, but a vast, infinite library of knowledge. "I will be there, Teacher Tian."

The 10x Refinement: Breaking the Ceiling

Later that night, in the privacy of the Dragon-Vein Chamber, Tian Mo sat surrounded by the twelve High-Grade Spirit Essence stones. Each one pulsed with a light so pure it made the air taste like ozone.

[Energy Requirement: 100,000 units.]

[Stones Detected: 12 High-Grade (Refined value: 120,000 units).]

"Finally," Tian Mo whispered.

He didn't absorb them one by one. He used his Qi to crush all twelve simultaneously. The explosion of energy was so vast that the mountain itself groaned.

[Ding! Initiating 10x Compression.]

[Cultivation: Foundation Establishment Level 3... 5... 7...]

[突破 (Breakthrough)! Foundation Establishment Level 9 (Great Circle).]

Tian Mo's body felt like it was made of neutron star material. Every cell was packed with 10 times the energy of a normal master. He could feel his "Shadow Army" slot expanding—he could now manifest three guards.

But more importantly, his Library had leveled up.

[Divine Library Rank 2 Unlocked.]

[New Feature: Flaw Mirror.]

Ability: You can now reflect an enemy's flaw back at them, causing their own technique to strike their soul.

Tian Mo stood up, the ground beneath his feet turning to dust. He looked toward the northern border, where the dark clouds of the Otherworldly Demonic Tribe were beginning to gather.

"The King is saved, the Saintess is warned, and my hunger is momentarily sated," Tian Mo mused. "But the 2nd Star exam... that requires me to have a student reach the Golden Core."

He looked at the shadow of Lu Feng, who was still practicing in the corner.

"Lu Feng," Tian Mo called out. "Stop practicing the 'Iron Shell'. It's time I taught you the 'Sovereign's Aegis'. We have a Kingdom to defend, and I have a badge to earn."
