Chapter 17 - Chapter 15 — The Messenger‎

The Clearing

‎

‎The clearing held its breath.

‎

‎No one moved.

‎

‎No one spoke.

‎

‎Every eye was fixed on the cloaked figure standing at the edge of Lucien's territory.

‎

‎Even the fire seemed to burn lower.

‎

‎Lucien stepped forward, placing himself between the figure and Elara.

‎

‎"Say what you came to say," he said coldly.

‎

‎The figure tilted its head slightly, as if amused.

‎

‎"I expected more hostility," it replied. "After all… you've been hiding something very valuable."

‎

‎A low growl spread through the pack.

‎

‎Gamma took a step forward. "You're standing on Alpha territory. Speak quickly."

‎

‎The figure chuckled softly.

‎

‎"I am not here to fight."

‎

‎"Then leave," Lucien said.

‎

‎Silence.

‎

‎Then—

‎

‎"No."

‎

‎The word echoed, calm but unyielding.

‎

‎Elara felt her pulse quicken.

‎

‎There was something wrong about this person.

‎

‎Not like the rogues.

‎

‎Not like the hunters.

‎

‎This felt… calculated.

‎

‎Deliberate.

‎

‎The figure slowly raised a gloved hand.

‎

‎"I bring a message."

‎

‎"From who?" Lucien asked.

‎

‎A pause.

‎

‎Then—

‎

‎"From the one you failed to kill."

‎

‎The temperature dropped.

‎

‎Lucien's eyes darkened instantly.

‎

‎"Elara," he said quietly, without turning, "stay behind me."

‎

‎Too late.

‎

‎The figure moved.

‎

‎Not forward—

‎

‎But faster than anyone expected.

‎

‎A flick of the wrist—

‎

‎And something shot through the air.

‎

‎Elara didn't even see it clearly.

‎

‎Only felt it.

‎

‎A sharp sting—

‎

‎Right against her pendant.

‎

‎She gasped.

‎

‎The silver charm flared with light, reacting violently.

‎

‎Lucien turned instantly.

‎

‎"Elara!"

‎

‎She staggered back, clutching the pendant as it burned against her skin.

‎

‎"What did you do?" Gamma shouted.

‎

‎The figure lowered its hand calmly.

‎

‎"Nothing permanent," it said. "Just a reminder."

‎

‎The light faded.

‎

‎But something had changed.

‎

‎Elara could feel it.

‎

‎Like a crack spreading beneath the surface.

‎

‎Lucien's voice dropped into something deadly.

‎

‎"You shouldn't have done that."

‎

‎The air around him shifted.

‎

‎Darkened.

‎

‎The pack felt it.

‎

‎Every Lycan in the clearing stiffened.

‎

‎Power rolled off Lucien in waves—heavy, suffocating, impossible to ignore.

‎

‎The figure finally took a step back.

‎

‎For the first time—

‎

‎It hesitated.

‎

‎"Careful, Alpha," it said. "If you lose control now… you may destroy the very thing you're trying to protect."

‎

‎Lucien didn't stop.

‎

‎Didn't slow.

‎

‎"Elara," he said softly.

‎

‎She looked up at him, still shaking.

‎

‎"I'm fine," she whispered.

‎

‎He studied her for a second.

‎

‎Making sure.

‎

‎Then—

‎

‎He turned back.

‎

‎Fully.

‎

‎And whatever restraint he had been holding onto—

‎

‎Snapped.

‎

‎The ground beneath his feet cracked.

‎

‎His eyes burned brighter than before.

‎

‎"You've delivered your message," he said.

‎

‎"Now leave."

‎

‎The command wasn't just spoken.

‎

‎It pressed into the air itself.

‎

‎The cloaked figure went still.

‎

‎Then slowly… it laughed again.

‎

‎"You always did have a temper."

‎

‎Lucien didn't react.

‎

‎But the tension sharpened.

‎

‎The figure took another step back, clearly measuring the situation now.

‎

‎"This is only the beginning," it said. "The seal is weakening. The girl is waking."

‎

‎Elara's heart skipped.

‎

‎"The next time we meet," the figure continued, "you won't be able to protect her from what she becomes."

‎

‎Lucien's voice turned cold as ice.

‎

‎"Go."

‎

‎This time—

‎

‎The figure listened.

‎

‎The shadows around it shifted.

‎

‎Twisted.

‎

‎And then—

‎

‎It was gone.

‎

‎The clearing fell into silence again.

‎

‎But not peace.

‎

‎Never peace.

‎

‎Elara's breathing was uneven as she slowly lowered her hand from the pendant.

‎

‎"It felt like…" she started.

‎

‎"Like something touched your power," Lucien finished.

‎

‎She nodded.

‎

‎Fear flickered in her eyes.

‎

‎"What does that mean?"

‎

‎Lucien didn't answer immediately.

‎

‎That was worse.

‎

‎Finally, he said—

‎

‎"It means they're testing you."

‎

‎A chill ran through her.

‎

‎"Testing me for what?"

‎

‎Lucien's gaze hardened.

‎

‎"For war."

‎

‎The word settled heavily over the clearing.

‎

‎No one spoke.

‎

‎No one needed to.

‎

‎Because they all felt it now—

‎

‎Something bigger was coming.

‎

‎And it was coming fast.
