Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Hurt distance

The next day at campus, Eun-ji walked through the familiar paths with a quiet unease lingering in her chest. Ji-ho was there—he always was—but he kept his distance. The usual teasing nickname, the gentle nudges, the calm protection—they were gone.

Her friends noticed immediately, nudging each other with knowing looks as Eun-ji's gaze kept drifting toward him. Ji-ho walked along the outer edge of the path, careful not to brush past her, careful not to let anything in his expression betray what had happened yesterday.

She tried to ignore it, telling herself it was probably nothing, that he was just busy or tired. But every instinct in her body whispered otherwise.

During lunch, she found herself sitting alone at their usual table. His absence pressed against her chest, a dull ache she couldn't shake. From across the cafeteria, she spotted him. Standing near the vending machines, hands in his pockets, staring blankly at nothing.

Her heart tightened. She wanted to go to him, to ask what was wrong, to laugh like nothing had happened. But the fear of rejection, of the coldness now encasing him, held her back.

Hours later, she was walking home along the quiet streets, her bag swinging lightly. The evening air was cooler now, tinged with the scent of faint rain. That's when it happened.

A shout behind her. A step too close. The stalker, braver than before, had followed her out.

Eun-ji froze. Panic clawed at her chest. She backed up, her hands gripping her bag tightly.

Before she could even think, a shadow moved.

Ji-ho.

He stepped in front of her, body angled like a shield. His expression was cold, almost frighteningly so. The warmth, the teasing, the playful smile—they were gone. Only sharp, controlled distance remained.

"Step back," he said, voice low and steady.

The stalker froze, sensing the shift. Eun-ji's eyes widened as she caught a glimpse—his movements weren't just fast… they were unnatural. Every small step he took, every flick of his head, seemed to blur, like he was just slightly too quick for the eye to follow.

The threat disappeared in moments. The stalker retreated, leaving Eun-ji trembling, clutching her bag. She looked up.

Ji-ho's expression was calm, distant. Protective, yes… but untouchable now.

"Are you okay?" she whispered, trying to steady her voice.

He didn't immediately answer. His eyes softened just slightly as he glanced down at her, but the cold distance lingered.

"I am," he said finally, but the tone was clipped, sharp. Almost as if he were keeping himself in a cage.

Eun-ji's stomach twisted. She wanted to step closer, to reach out, to bring back the warmth they usually shared. But she didn't. Something in the coldness kept her frozen, afraid that crossing the line would make him pull further away.

For the rest of the walk home, neither spoke. The silence was heavy, the kind that presses against the chest. Eun-ji's mind spun with questions she didn't dare ask, and Ji-ho's thoughts swirled with guilt, fear, and the weight of his secret.

I have to keep her safe, he told himself silently. Even if it kills me to stay distant.

Eun-ji's lips pressed together. She wanted answers, wanted the teasing smile, wanted the "Cherry" that made her heart skip. But for now… she had to wait.

And that waiting, that simmering tension, was almost unbearable.
