Chapter 24 - Chapter 24. He Notices Her Watching Him

The city glittered below them like scattered gold.

Gabriel stepped out of the Lamborghini first, the cool night air sharpening his focus. He walked around the front of the car, movements unhurried, composed — the kind of presence that drew attention without asking for it.

When he opened her door, Camille accepted his hand but did not rely on it.

She stepped out smoothly, heels steady against the pavement.

Then she moved a few paces away.

Not to create distance.

To observe.

Gabriel leaned casually against the bonnet, skyline stretching behind him. The wind shifted lightly through the air, carrying faint city noise from below.

He felt it before he saw it.

Her gaze.

Not admiring.

Not dazzled.

Studying.

He turned his head slightly.

She was standing with one arm loosely crossed, the other resting at her side. Braids falling over her shoulder. Expression calm. Focused entirely on him.

"You're analysing me again," he said.

"I am."

She didn't deny it.

That honesty did something to him.

"And what are you looking for tonight?" he asked.

"Patterns."

The word settled between them.

Gabriel pushed off the bonnet and took a step closer — not invading her space, but narrowing it.

"And what patterns have you noticed?"

She held his gaze.

"You don't perform wealth."

He raised an eyebrow slightly.

"You don't flaunt control. You just… operate in it."

He considered that.

"And that matters?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

She hesitated — not from fear. From precision.

"Because men who need to prove themselves are unpredictable."

The wind moved again, brushing against her blouse. The city lights reflected faintly in her eyes.

"And I'm predictable?" he asked.

"No."

She stepped closer now — deliberately.

"You're intentional."

The difference was subtle.

But important.

Gabriel studied her face more carefully.

"You watch everything," he said.

"I have to."

"Why?"

There it was.

The shift.

A quieter edge beneath the night air.

Camille looked out over the skyline briefly before answering.

"Because I've trusted the wrong person before."

Not dramatic.

Not tearful.

Just truth.

Gabriel absorbed that without interruption.

When she looked back at him, something in his expression had changed.

Less assessment.

More understanding.

"You're not watching to judge," he said slowly.

"You're watching to decide."

"Yes."

Silence expanded between them.

But it wasn't empty.

It was heavy with awareness.

"You're choosing," he continued.

"I don't move without choice."

He stepped closer again, stopping just within her space now. Close enough that the warmth between them was undeniable.

"And what happens if you choose wrong?"

Her eyes did not waver.

"I won't."

Confidence.

Not arrogance.

And for the first time that night, Gabriel felt something unfamiliar press against his controlled exterior.

Not challenge.

Responsibility.

Because she wasn't falling blindly.

She was evaluating carefully.

And if she chose him…

It would mean something.

"You realise," he said quietly, "that I'm watching you too."

A faint smile curved her lips.

"I know."

The wind moved around them again, the Lamborghini silent behind them, the city endless below.

He reached out then — not to pull her in.

Just to rest his hand lightly at her waist.

Testing.

Intentional.

She didn't step back.

But she didn't lean in either.

Electric.

Controlled.

Mutual.

He noticed something then — the subtle shift in her breathing.

And he realised something else entirely.

She wasn't the only one deciding.

He already had.
