Chapter 33 - Chapter 33. Media Mentions His Name With Another

The morning after the gala felt ordinary.

Too ordinary.

Camille sat at the small table by her window, sunlight spilling across the marble counter, her coffee untouched but warm in her hands. The city moved below her in its usual rhythm — traffic, distant horns, life continuing without pause.

Her phone lay face down beside her.

She had not checked it yet.

There was a stillness inside her she didn't fully trust.

The previous night replayed in fragments — Lena's voice, that deliberate touch on Gabriel's arm, the subtle flash of a camera she had barely registered at the time.

"You didn't mention her," she had said.

"She's irrelevant," he had replied.

Irrelevant.

The word lingered.

Her phone vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

She ignored it.

Another vibration followed. Then several in quick succession.

Zara.

Two missed calls.

Three messages.

A small crease formed between Camille's brows.

She turned the phone over.

Notifications stacked across her screen.

Trending — Business & Society.

Her thumb hovered.

Then tapped.

The image loaded slowly.

And there it was.

Gabriel Kane.

Lena Paul.

Captured in perfect proximity.

The photographer had chosen the moment carefully — Lena's hand resting against his arm, Gabriel's face angled toward hers, expression intense, unreadable. The background blurred just enough to isolate them from the crowd.

Camille was nowhere in sight.

Not cropped awkwardly.

Not partially visible.

Erased.

The headline sat boldly beneath the image:

"Gabriel Kane Reunites With Former Flame Lena Paul — Is the Power Couple Back?"

Her breathing didn't change.

She enlarged the image.

Studied it.

The lighting made them look almost cinematic. History framed as destiny. Familiarity mistaken for intimacy.

Below, the caption read:

> After years apart following one of the most public corporate collapses in recent memory, Gabriel Kane and Lena Paul were spotted in close conversation at last night's executive gala.

Witnesses describe the interaction as "intense" and "personal."

Has one of the city's most talked-about partnerships found its way back?

Camille scrolled.

The comments were merciless.

> "She left when he was down. Now he's up again."

"They always belonged together."

"That mystery woman from earlier was just temporary."

Temporary.

Her jaw tightened — not in hurt.

In recognition.

Narratives were powerful.

Stronger than truth.

Her phone rang.

Gabriel.

She stared at his name lighting up the screen.

Did he already know?

Or had someone told him?

The call ended.

Started again.

Camille lowered the phone slowly onto the table.

Her gaze returned to the image.

Lena's hand on his arm.

The angle.

The story it suggested.

The simplicity of how easily something intentional could be rewritten.

Her phone buzzed again.

Another notification.

The topic had climbed higher.

Trending.

She finally picked the phone up.

But she didn't answer.

She just looked at the image one last time.

And for the first time since becoming his girlfriend—

She felt the ground shift.
