Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: Red Hair Arrival

Chapter 2: Red Hair Arrival

The afternoon sun hung lazy and golden over Foosha Village, turning the sea into molten copper.

Jax sat on the low stone wall outside Partys Bar, legs dangling, finishing the last spoonful of Makino's seafood stew. The bowl was scraped clean. Three unconscious bandits still lay in a neat pile near the village well—hands tied with their own belts, courtesy of the fisherman who'd finally found his courage after the fight. A couple of kids were poking them with sticks, giggling nervously.

Makino stepped out onto the porch, wiping her hands on her apron.

"You really didn't have to pay for that second bowl," she said.

Jax shrugged. "Felt right. Plus I'm starving. Turns out getting shot builds an appetite."

She gave him a long, searching look. Not fear—more like she was trying to decide whether he was a miracle or a monster wearing a teenager's face.

"You're not hurt at all," she said quietly. "Not even a bruise."

"Perks of weird biology." He tapped his chest where the bullet hole had been. "Don't worry. I'm not contagious."

Before she could reply, a small voice piped up from the path.

"Makino! Makino! There's a big ship coming!"

Luffy.

Seven years old, straw hat already too big for his head, rubbery grin splitting his face from ear to ear. He skidded to a stop in front of the bar, pointing wildly toward the horizon.

"It's got a goat on the front! And flags with red hair!"

Jax's spoon froze halfway to his mouth.

Right on schedule.

He set the bowl down carefully.

The Red Hair Pirates.

Shanks.

The man who would—ten months from now—give a certain rubber boy his dream and his scar.

Jax felt the blue screen flicker at the edge of his vision.

Passive Scan – Active

High-potential adaptation targets approaching

Distance: 1.2 nautical miles

Threat level: Extreme (to baseline humans)

Recommendation: Engage. Observe. Adapt.

Jax stood up slowly.

"Guess break time's over."

Makino looked between him and Luffy. "You know them?"

"Not yet," Jax said. "But I think I'm about to."

He started walking toward the beach.

Luffy bounced after him like an over-caffeinated puppy. "Hey! Weird clothes guy! You're coming too? Cool! You're strong, right? You beat those bandits super fast!"

Jax glanced down at the kid. Huge eyes. No fear. Just pure, contagious excitement.

"Yeah," Jax said. "I'm kinda hard to kill."

Luffy beamed. "That's awesome! I'm gonna be Pirate King someday! You should join my crew!"

Jax snorted. "Appreciate the offer, captain. But I've got… other plans."

By the time they reached the sandy shore, the Red Force was already anchoring just beyond the shallows. Red sails furled. Goat figurehead staring blankly at the beach. Laughter and music drifted across the water—shanties, clinking bottles, the unmistakable sound of pirates having a good day.

A small boat was already rowing in. Four figures.

Shanks at the helm—scarlet hair catching the sun like fire, white shirt open to the chest, saber at his hip. Beside him: Lucky Roux with his meat-on-a-bone, Yasopp cleaning his rifle, Benn Beckman chewing on a cigarette, calm as death.

They beached the dinghy with practiced ease.

Shanks stepped onto the sand first. Boots crunched. He stretched, cracked his neck, then noticed the small crowd that had gathered—villagers, Luffy bouncing on his toes, and one very out-of-place young man in a graphic tee standing with arms crossed.

Shanks' eyes flicked to Jax. Lingered.

The grin came slow—easy, friendly, but sharp at the edges.

"Well now," he said. "You're new."

Jax met the stare without flinching. "Got here this morning. Already made some enemies." He jerked a thumb back toward the tied-up bandits.

Shanks laughed—genuine, warm. "Looks like you handled yourself just fine."

Luffy barreled forward. "Shanks! Shanks! You're back! Did you bring meat?!"

Roux chuckled and tossed the boy a huge drumstick from seemingly nowhere. Luffy caught it mid-air and started devouring.

Shanks' gaze stayed on Jax. "You don't smell like East Blue. Or any sea I know."

Jax shrugged. "Long story. Bad navigation. Weird morning."

Beckman exhaled smoke. "He took three of Higuma's boys apart like they were made of paper, according to the kids. Didn't even break a sweat."

Shanks raised an eyebrow. "That so?"

Jax spread his hands. "They shot first. I objected."

A ripple of interest moved through the crew.

Yasopp leaned forward. "You a Marine? Revolutionary? Some kinda bounty hunter?"

"None of the above," Jax said. "Just… passing through."

Shanks studied him another long moment.

Then he smiled wider.

"Come have a drink with us tonight. Party at the bar. Bring your appetite—and any stories worth telling."

Jax felt the System ping softly.

Social Adaptation Opportunity Detected

Target: Red-Haired Shanks

Haki Signature: All Three Types – Master Level

Potential Gains: Observation Haki (Base), Armament Haki (Base), Conqueror's Haki (Latent Trigger)

Risk: Minimal (unless provoked)

Jax nodded once. "I'll be there."

Shanks clapped him on the shoulder—casual, friendly, but the grip carried weight that said I could crush bone if I wanted.

"Good man."

As the pirates headed up toward Partys Bar—Luffy already halfway through his second drumstick—Jax lingered on the beach a moment.

He looked down at his hands.

No tremble. No fear.

Just anticipation.

He clenched a fist.

A faint ripple of black lightning—barely there, more instinct than control—flickered around his knuckles for half a second and vanished.

The blue screen updated instantly.

[Passive Adaptation Triggered – Proximity Exposure]

Conqueror's Haki (Latent) – Acquired (Level 0.1%)

→ Positive: Unconscious intimidation aura forming

→ Negative: Mental strain / loss of control consumed

Jax exhaled through his nose.

"Day one," he muttered, "and I'm already stealing Yonko-tier bullshit."

He turned and followed the laughter up the path.

The windmills turned overhead.

The sun sank lower.

And somewhere in the mountains, Higuma the Bear was gathering more men—furious, humiliated, planning revenge on the village that had humiliated his crew.

Jax cracked a grin.

"Let them come."

Tonight was going to be educational.
