Chapter 1 - The Compass That Shouldn’t Move

The sea was calm that morning.

Small waves brushed against the wooden docks of Astra Village, a quiet island settlement surrounded by endless blue water. Fishermen were already shouting across the harbor, arguing about whose catch was bigger while gulls circled above, waiting for scraps.

Life here was simple.

Too simple.

At least that's what Kai believed.

He lay on top of a grassy hill overlooking the ocean, one arm behind his head, the other lazily tossing a pebble into the air.

"Another boring day…" he muttered.

Below the hill, the village bustled with the same routine it had followed for generations. Fish, boats, nets, and the smell of salt in the air.

Kai sighed.

There had to be more to the world than this tiny island.

Ever since he was a child, he had heard strange stories from traveling sailors. Stories about ancient ruins hidden across the seas, cities buried beneath deserts, and relics left behind by a civilization that vanished thousands of years ago.

Most villagers dismissed those stories as nonsense.

Kai didn't.

To him, they felt real.

That was why he loved exploring places everyone else ignored.

Places like the old cliffs beyond the forest.

"KAIIIII!"

A voice suddenly shouted from the path below.

Kai groaned.

Only one person yelled his name like that.

He leaned over the edge of the hill and saw Mira, sprinting toward him with a basket in her hands.

"You're supposed to be helping at the docks!" she shouted.

Kai rolled onto his back.

"I helped yesterday."

"You helped for ten minutes!"

"That still counts."

Mira stopped at the bottom of the hill and crossed her arms. "One day the chief is going to throw you into the ocean."

Kai grinned. "Then I'll finally get to see what's beyond it."

Mira stared at him for a moment before sighing.

"You're impossible."

Kai stood up and stretched.

"Relax. I'll help later. First I'm going exploring."

"Exploring where?"

Kai pointed toward the distant cliffs rising behind the forest.

Mira frowned.

"The forbidden cliffs?"

"That's just what the elders call them because they're scared."

"Or maybe because people disappear there."

Kai shrugged.

"Exactly. That makes it interesting."

Before Mira could protest again, Kai had already started running toward the forest path.

"KAIII!" she yelled.

But he was already gone.

The forest was quiet.

Sunlight slipped through tall trees while insects buzzed lazily in the warm air.

Kai moved quickly along a narrow trail, pushing branches aside as he climbed higher toward the cliffs. He had explored most of this forest before, but today he wanted to go farther than ever.

The path eventually disappeared.

Good.

That meant he was close.

After another ten minutes of climbing, the trees began to thin out, revealing the towering stone cliffs that overlooked the ocean.

But something caught his attention.

A narrow crack in the rock wall.

Kai had passed this area many times before.

He was certain that crack hadn't been there yesterday.

Curiosity immediately replaced caution.

He stepped closer.

The crack was just wide enough for someone to squeeze through.

Kai grinned.

"Well… that's definitely not suspicious."

Without hesitation, he slipped inside.

The air changed instantly.

Cool.

Silent.

The narrow passage opened into a hidden cave.

Kai's footsteps echoed softly as he moved deeper inside. Strange markings covered the stone walls—symbols he had never seen before.

They looked ancient.

Very ancient.

At the center of the cave was a large stone pedestal.

Something rested on top of it.

Kai's heart began beating faster.

He stepped closer.

It was a compass.

But unlike any compass he had ever seen.

The metal casing was dark and smooth, almost black, with faint glowing lines carved into its surface. The glass covering the needle was perfectly clear despite the obvious age of the object.

Kai frowned.

"Who would leave a compass here?"

He picked it up.

For a moment…

Nothing happened.

Then suddenly—

CLICK.

The needle inside the compass began to spin.

Faster.

And faster.

Kai's eyes widened.

"That's… not normal."

Compasses pointed north.

Everyone knew that.

But this one…

It wasn't pointing north.

The needle slowly stopped.

Pointing directly at him.

Kai blinked.

"…What?"

The compass vibrated slightly in his hand.

And then something impossible happened.

The ancient symbols on the cave walls lit up.

A deep rumbling sound echoed through the chamber as dust fell from the ceiling.

Kai stumbled back.

"What did I just do?!"

The compass needle suddenly changed direction again.

This time it pointed toward the open sea beyond the cliffs.

As if it was guiding him somewhere.

Before Kai could process what was happening

A voice echoed faintly through the cave.

Not from outside.

From the walls themselves.

Low.

Ancient.

Almost like a whisper carried through time.

"...The last one… has awakened…"

Kai froze.

His heart pounded.

"Okay… that's definitely not normal."

The compass pulsed with faint light.

And far away…

Across the vast ocean…

Something ancient stirred for the first time in centuries.

Kai stared at the strange compass in his hand.

He had come looking for adventure.

He had no idea…

That adventure had just found him.
