Chapter 1 - Introduction

Danitza POV

I never truly believed that education is the key to success. I mean, if you really think about it, corruption is the hidden gem that a lot of successful people use to get where they are in life.

Hey, my name is Danitza Grayson. I am a first-year student at Evercrest University. If I am being honest, going to university wasn't a part of my plans. I'm not a big fan of learning, if you know what I mean. I am not terrible in school; in fact, I am quite brilliant, but just the thought of sitting in classrooms to understand difficult concepts I most likely won't use in my day-to-day is quite disheartening.

At Evercrest University, I will be studying Hospitality and Tourism Management because why not? I will be focusing more on the culinary aspects. I always had a passion for cooking and delicious cuisines, and mostly because I love to eat.

Oh, lastly, a few things about me: I am a 5'0 brown-skinned, thick baddie. I have two siblings, an older brother and sister. I am the youngest. My life is not perfect. I come from a poor family; my parents are not in the best jobs, but they try. I am the first one in our family to go to university, so you can only imagine. Home isn't the best, which is one of the reasons why I pushed to get into university; it's an escape from how bad home is, no, I am not being abused, well, not anymore, at least. All I really want to be in this lifetime is successful, and by the looks of it so far, education is the only escape I have right now, because if I could do drugs or something, believe me, I would. My grandmother always said, "In this life, if you are not educated, then you are nothing because even criminals need to look at things from a logical perspective before they act." I always remember those words, so that if I do become a criminal, I will definitely be a smart one.

Evercrest University wasn't my first choice, but a few of my friends from high school are attending as well, so I won't be lonely at all. As I mentioned, I need to call Sanika, she is a friend of mine that I met in fourth form in high school, so we haven't been friends that long, but she is literally my twin.

"Hello, Sanika?" I said as she answered the phone. "You ready for another educational journey?" Sanika asked me, she knew that I wasn't a big fan of school.

"Girl, you know that I'm not, are you planning on dorming because I am. It would be so fun if we were roommates, we could help eachother shave, you know!" I said with a laugh. I could hear Sanika laughing on the other end of the phone.

"Danitza, that's not even funny, but yeah, I am dorming. My mother wants me out of the house for a while so she can bring in Benny." I could literally hear her eyes rolling. Sanika isn't the biggest fan of her mother's pleasure buddies.

"Sanika, she is an adult, there's not much you can do to stop her, you know. At least you will be far away from it all this time around." I said to Sanika because I know that, from the split between her mother and father, she hasn't really been pleased.

"I know that much, but she still is a mother now, and before she started wanting her pleasure moments, but anyways... By the way, have you heard from Dacari or Jadira as yet?"

Dacri and Jadira are also our friends.

"No, I haven't heard from them, but we can add them to the call and hear what they are saying because I don't think Jadira got accepted to Evercrest, and I'm not sure about Dacari," I answered Sanika. She started adding both Dacari and Jadira to the call.

This is actually real, we are really going to university, damn.

"Hey, what's up?" Dacari answered. He is Sanika's best friend; they have known each other longer than they have known me. "Hey Dacari, we are talking about Evercrest. We are wondering if you got in." I said. Dacari is the only dude in our little clique, doesn't really talk much, though, and Jadira still isn't answering her phone.

"No, I got into Brighton Hills University." Damn, that's really good. Brighton isn't far from Evercrest, so I guess we are still close, I guess. "So why did we have to call you to get that information, sir?" Sanika is the one to ask that question; their friendship is so amusing, it's like mother and son.

"Because..." Dacari does not seem to have an excuse.

"You can't even be honest with me, Carii. Do we need to drill every piece of information out of. Does your mother even know you got accepted into Brighton Hills?" Sanika asked Dacari. I am just here listening to them babble.

I wonder if Jadira is doing okay, though, because if any one of us really wanted to go to university, it would be her, but she hasn't answered her phone. It's just say she is unavailable.

"Danitzaaa! Are you even listening to me?" "No. I'm sorry, I was just thinking about something. What were you saying, darling?" I said to Sanika, she hates it when she is talking and no one is paying her any attention. I always told her she is an attention seeker deep down.

Sanika is the type of person who, if she is talking to you, requires your undivided attention; if you look away for even a second, she will get upset and stop talking.

"I don't even want to talk anymore, gosh!" Sanika answered with frustration, "Heyyyy, I'm sorry. I'm listening. You have my full attention, Nika. What were you saying? I'm all ears, my love." The way Nika and I spoke to each other, one would think that we are a couple, but I don't mind.

"No! If you cared about what I was saying, you should have been listening." I sighed, knowing that she wouldn't tell me what she said before.

"Dacri, what did Sanika say? Could you tell me, please?" I asked Dacari.

"She was just blabbering about how I abandoned her and how we couldn't be friends anymore because I will be so far away, and that I will find other friends and not remember you guys. Then she was asking you if you would stay friends with her and me if she were to transfer to Brighton Hills. That's literally it."

I paused for a moment, then started laughing because what?

"Ummm, yes, I would still be friends with you guys. Why wouldn't I? And Nika, would you really give up shaving together to go to school with Dacari? Think about it, we can have a really good time together."

"You too are so gay, it's crazy," Dacari said with a small chuckle. "Stop being so homophobic, Dacari," I said with a laugh.

"So, I no longer exist now? You two are just talking away." Sanika said clearly upset, I swear she is bipolar at times I just can't prove it yet.

I am so happy, though, that these are the people I am continuing my future with. It was not easy in high school, but we have made it this far, so I believe we can make it farther.
