Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Power of Nature

Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, just past midnight, six people opened their eyes at the same time. They were thousands of kilometers apart from each other, but they had all felt the same thing: It was as if something had exploded at the very heart of the universe, then fallen silent once more.

In Lagos, Nigeria, 26-year-old engineer Aisha Okonkwo woke up in her bed, drenched in sweat. Her hands were burning. Truly burning. Tiny flames rose from her palms, and her fingertips glowed with a red light. She screamed, shaking her hands, but the flames wouldn't go out; instead, they grew larger. The curtain by her bedside caught fire. Aisha panicked, leaped out of bed, and ran to the kitchen, thrusting her hands under water. The water evaporated instantly. But the flames gradually subsided.

Aisha leaned against the kitchen counter, gasping for breath. "What... what happened to me?" she whispered. She looked at her hands; her fingertips were still red, but no longer burning. She rushed to put out the curtain—the fire hadn't spread. She was lucky. But deep inside, she felt that something had changed. Fire was now a part of her.

In Russia's Kamchatka region, in a small village at the foot of volcanoes, 34-year-old geologist Dimitri Volkov woke at midnight feeling his body melting like sand. His hands, his arms, his legs... It felt as if lava were flowing beneath his skin. He tried to get out of bed, but when his fingers touched the iron bedframe, the iron melted, becoming liquid.

Dimitri screamed and pulled back. "It's a dream!" he shouted. "It's just a dream!"

But it wasn't. When he raised his hands, red-hot drops of lava dripped from his fingertips, burning through the wooden floor where they landed. Dimitri rushed outside in fear, running into the cold night. But no matter how far he ran, his body burned. When he reached the foothills of a volcano, he stopped. He buried his hands in the soil. The soil melted along with his touch, mixing with the lava. For a moment, Dimitri felt that the earth and lava had become a part of him. A mixture of fear and excitement filled him.

In a village in southern China, 23-year-old water engineer Mei-Lin Chen had fallen asleep by the riverbank. Suddenly, she felt her body flowing like water. When she opened her eyes, she saw her hands turning transparent, water streaming through them. She cried out in fear, but her voice sounded as if it came from underwater. She rolled toward the river and merged with it. For an instant, she felt the entire flow of the river, every living creature within it, every single drop. She had become the river itself.

Then a fish bumped into her, and she snapped back to reality. She emerged from the water; her hands had returned to normal. But she was drenched, completely soaked. She looked at the river, and the river seemed to look back at her. "You... are a part of me," she whispered. The river rippled, as if in agreement.

On Japan's Hokkaido island, 29-year-old figure skater Takeshi Nakamura was practicing on the ice rink at night when he suddenly felt the ice beneath his feet melting. He fell, his hands touching the ice. But the ice didn't melt; instead, it grew harder, expanded. Takeshi's hands became covered in ice. He pulled his hands back in fear, but the ice came with him. His fingers had turned into ice swords.

Takeshi stood up and looked at the rink. For a moment, he realized he could feel all the ice on the rink. With a thought, the ice on the rink rippled, rose up, and formed a giant ice tower. Takeshi stood frozen before the tower he had created. "What... what have I done?" he whispered.

In Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert, 27-year-old meteorologist Diego Ramirez was watching the sky. Suddenly, the wind stopped. Then the wind started again, but this time it was under his control. Diego raised his hands, and the wind rose with him. With a thought, he realized he could direct the wind wherever he wanted. In the middle of the desert, he created a small tornado, then dissipated it. He could bend the weather.

"Incredible," he murmured. "The wind speaks to me."

In India's Kerala region, under the monsoon rains, 31-year-old farmer Priya Sharma was working in her field. Suddenly, the rain stopped. Then it started again, but this time it fell exactly as she willed it. Priya raised her hands and realized she could control the rain. With a thought, she intensified the rain, then calmed it. The clouds obeyed her command. She even summoned a lightning bolt, striking exactly where she intended.

Priya looked at the sky, her eyes filling with tears. "Have the gods given me a gift?" she whispered.

As these six individuals, unaware of each other, discovered their powers, hours passed and the sun rose. But all of them felt a call within. As if a voice was summoning them to a place, to the forest.

Aisha left her home in Lagos, finding herself walking toward the forest. Dimitri rose from Kamchatka, unconsciously heading south. Mei-Lin followed the river. Takeshi left the ice rink. Diego crossed the desert. Priya followed the rain.

And a few days later, they all met in the same place, deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

As Aisha walked through the forest, she saw a man ahead of her. Dimitri stood looking at her, lava dripping from his hands. From behind, Mei-Lin emerged, her hands still wet. Takeshi arrived with his ice swords. Diego glided down on the wind. Priya appeared beneath the rain.

The six looked at each other. They had felt the same thing. They had answered the same call.

"Who are you?" Aisha asked, her voice trembling.

"I don't know," Dimitri said. "But I felt the same thing you did."

"An explosion," Mei-Lin said. "As if the heart of the universe exploded."

"And then, fire," said Aisha.

"Lava," said Dimitri.

"Water," said Mei-Lin.

"Ice," said Takeshi.

"Wind," said Diego.

"Rain and lightning," said Priya.

They fell silent again. They understood. All six had changed at the same moment, for the same reason.

"What do we do now?" Diego asked.

Priya looked at the sky. "I think... first, we get to know each other."

Aisha nodded. "I'm Aisha. I can control fire."

"Dimitri. Lava."

"Mei-Lin. Water."

"Takeshi. Ice."

"Diego. Wind."

"Priya. Rain, snow, lightning..."

The six of them reached out their hands and touched each other. And the moment they touched, a wave of energy spread around them. Fire, lava, water, ice, wind, rain... All merged together, forming a giant elemental storm for an instant, then calming down.

"Together, we are stronger," Aisha said.

But at that very moment, Aisha's eyes changed. The fire within her became uncontrollable. She looked at the others, felt their power, and... grew jealous. Why did she only have fire? Why wasn't she like the others?

"Aisha, are you alright?" Dimitri asked.

Aisha didn't answer. She raised her hands, spraying fire around her. Flames began to engulf the forest.

"What are you doing?" Mei-Lin shouted, trying to extinguish the flames with her water.

But Aisha grew even more furious. "You are all so powerful! And I'm just fire!"

Diego tried to direct the flames with wind, Takeshi attempted to cool them with ice, Priya summoned rain. But Aisha's fire resisted them all.

Dimitri surrounded Aisha with his lava. "Calm down, Aisha! We are friends!"

But Aisha was already beyond control. She hurled fireballs, burning everything around. Priya summoned a lightning bolt and sent it toward Aisha. But Aisha absorbed the lightning with her fire and grew even stronger.

"We have to stop her!" Takeshi shouted.

All five combined their powers. Diego used wind, Mei-Lin water, Takeshi ice, Priya rain, and Dimitri lava. They formed a giant elemental wave and sent it toward Aisha.

Aisha was helpless. The wave engulfed her, extinguishing her fire. She collapsed to the ground, unconscious.

The five looked around, gasping for breath. A large part of the forest had burned. But Priya immediately summoned rain and put out the fire.

"What happened to Aisha?" Mei-Lin asked.

Dimitri went to Aisha and checked her pulse. "She's alive. Just unconscious."

Priya looked at the sky. "Her powers must have frightened her. She can't control them."

Takeshi asked, "What if she attacks again when she wakes up?"

Diego replied, "Then we'll stop her together. But first, we need to understand her."

They gathered around Aisha. At that moment, a strange bond formed between them. They had changed at the same time; they shared the same fate. They didn't want to lose Aisha.

Priya knelt down and stroked Aisha's hair. "Wake up, sister. We understand you."

Aisha's eyes fluttered open. At first, there was fear in them. But when she saw the five faces around her, her fear subsided a little.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I couldn't control it."

Priya smiled. "It's okay. We'll learn together."

Aisha sat up and looked around. She saw the scars of the fire and felt a pang of guilt. "The forest... I did this."

Diego placed a hand on her shoulder. "But we put it out. Together."

Aisha lowered her head. "Am I a monster?"

Dimitri laughed. "A monster? You're the princess of fire. But even princesses sometimes lose control."

Aisha smiled at his joke. But the fear was still there, inside her. What if she lost control again? What if she hurt the ones she loved?

Priya, as if reading her thoughts, said, "Don't worry, we're here with you. Together, we can overcome anything."

The six looked at each other. They were travelers of the same fate. But in Aisha's eyes, there was still a darkness. That darkness was a harbinger of a great storm to come.

Just then, a light appeared in the sky. All six looked up. The light transformed into a human silhouette and slowly descended to the ground.

It was Sofia Reinhardt. But they didn't recognize her.

"Who are you?" Diego asked, immediately on guard.

Sofia smiled. "Don't worry, I'm a friend. I'm like you. But I was triggered a little before you."

"Triggered?" Mei-Lin asked.

"Yes. The 03:17 anomaly. You felt it, didn't you?"

All six nodded.

Sofia extended her hand. "I'm Sofia. I came to find you. Because you're not alone. And you're in danger."

"Danger?" Takeshi asked.

Sofia's expression grew serious. "There are people hunting individuals like you. People who want to use your powers, to control you. But together, we can resist them."

Aisha looked at her suspiciously. "Why are you helping us?"

Sofia looked into her eyes. "Because I was alone too. Because I was afraid too. And because together, we are stronger."

For a moment, Aisha saw the truth in Sofia's eyes. But the darkness within her was still there. "Will you accept me? My uncontrollable fire?"

Sofia smiled. "We'll accept you as you are. With your fire, your fears, everything."

Aisha took a deep breath. Maybe this was a new beginning. Maybe, truly, she wasn't alone.

The six gathered around Sofia. A seventh member had joined their family.

But as Aisha looked at the sky, the voice inside her still whispered: "You are different. You are not one of them."

No matter how hard she tried to suppress it, that voice wouldn't go away.

A crackling sound came from deep within the forest. Everyone tensed, assuming battle positions.

But what emerged wasn't an enemy. It was a wounded jaguar. It had a deep burn mark on its chest. It had been burned by Aisha's fire.

When Aisha saw the jaguar, her heart broke. She ran to its side. The jaguar was taking its last breaths. Aisha placed her hands on its wound, trying to heal it with her fire. But the fire only made it worse. The jaguar writhed in pain and died.

Aisha stared at the jaguar's lifeless body. Her eyes filled with tears. "I... I killed it."

Priya came to her side and put a hand on her shoulder. "You didn't do it on purpose."

But Aisha lifted her head, and now her eyes held not just pain, but also anger. "What if one day I kill one of you?"

No one could answer.

Aisha stood up and began walking deeper into the forest. "I'm leaving."

Sofia called after her: "Aisha, where are you going?"

Aisha didn't stop. "To find myself. To learn control. And maybe... to destroy myself."

She disappeared from sight.

The remaining six watched her go. Sofia took a deep breath. "We have to find her. We can't leave her alone."

Diego nodded. "But for now, we need to rest. We're exhausted."

Priya summoned rain, and a light drizzle began. "The forest will bring her back to us."

But Takeshi was worried. "What if she doesn't come back?"

Sofia looked at the sky. "If she comes back, good. If she doesn't... we'll find her. Because we're family now."

That night, they set up camp in the forest. They didn't light a fire, out of respect for Aisha's memory. Stars shone in the sky. All six huddled together, sharing their loneliness.

But far away, deep in the forest, Aisha was alone. She looked at her hands; her fingertips were still red. The jaguar's death haunted her.

"I am a monster," she whispered.

And at that moment, the fire within her ignited again. This time, it was larger, more uncontrollable, more dangerous.

The forest began to burn once more.

Aisha disappeared into the flames. And now, she was no longer recognizable.

In the darkness, only a pair of eyes gleamed. And those eyes no longer belonged to the old Aisha.
