Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO

Lara hated being late.

She walked faster than usual, heels tapping sharply against the pavement as she checked her watch. The client meeting had been moved up by thirty minutes, and traffic had decided to behave like it always did—badly.

A breeze lifted her hair slightly as she passed a roadside kiosk.

For a split second, she felt something strange.

Like someone was watching her.

She glanced over her shoulder.

Nothing.

Just cars. A man buying water. A woman bargaining loudly over oranges.

She almost laughed at herself.

You're imagining things.

Still, she adjusted the strap of her bag and kept walking.

Across the road, Kieran watched her disappear into the crowd.

He hadn't seen her face clearly. Only a glimpse—dark hair catching light, confident stride, unaware posture.

Human.

His wolf paced inside him, restless.

This was not part of his plans.

Human mates were rare. Complicated. Dangerous.

The pack elders would not approve.

And yet, the pull was undeniable. Not dramatic. Not violent.

Just steady.

Certain.

He stepped back toward his car, forcing himself to breathe evenly. He had responsibilities. A pack to lead. Deals to finalize.

This changed nothing.

Except it did.

Because as he drove toward his office building in the city, one thing remained constant—

The scent lingered.

Faint.

But unforgettable.

And somewhere in Lagos, Lara Adeyemi felt that same unexplainable shift again… like the world had quietly adjusted its course without asking her permission.

She just didn't know why yet

Kieran did not like wasting time.

The boardroom on the top floor of Vale Holdings overlooked half the city. Glass walls. Polished table. Quiet power. The kind of room where decisions shifted markets without raising voices.

He sat at the head of the table, suit sharp, expression neutral. Executives filled the seats along both sides, flipping through reports, pretending not to be nervous.

He rarely attended meetings in person.

That alone made everyone sit straighter.

The regional manager was mid-presentation when the door opened.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a soft click.

But the shift in the room was instant.

Kieran felt her before he properly saw her.

That same scent from the roadside.

Warmer now. Clearer.

His spine straightened slightly.

A young woman stepped inside, holding a file against her chest. She paused when she noticed all eyes were on her.

"I'm sorry," she said calmly. "Mr. Durojaiye asked me to drop this."

Her voice wasn't shaky.

That surprised him.

Most people sounded different when they walked into rooms like this.

The manager cleared his throat quickly. "Yes, yes. That's fine. Bring it here."

She walked forward.

Measured steps. No rush. No attempt to shrink herself smaller.

Kieran watched her properly now.

Not in a predatory way.

In a… assessing way.

Dark hair pulled back neatly. Simple blouse. Minimal makeup. Focused eyes.

Human.

Completely unaware.

As she reached the manager's side, she finally looked up — and her gaze collided with his.

It lasted less than two seconds.

But something inside him shifted.

Not explosive.

Not uncontrollable.

Just aware.

She didn't blush. Didn't stare. Didn't look intimidated.

If anything, she looked slightly irritated by the attention.

Good.

She handed over the file. "These are the revised projections."

"Thank you, Lara," the manager said quickly.

Lara.

So that was her name.

She gave a small nod and turned to leave.

And the moment the door closed behind her, the air changed again.

No one spoke for a beat.

Kieran leaned back in his chair slightly.

"Continue," he said calmly.

The presentation resumed.

But he wasn't listening anymore.

Outside the boardroom, Lara exhaled slowly.

She hated walking into meetings like that unannounced. It always felt like stepping into someone else's territory.

And the man at the head of the table—

She frowned slightly.

There had been something about him.

Not attractive in an obvious way.

Not even traditionally intimidating.

Just… intense.

Like he saw more than he showed.

She shook her head.

It didn't matter.

He was probably one of the investors.

Men like that existed in a different world.

And she preferred staying in hers.

Back inside the meeting, once it ended, executives filed out quickly.

The manager lingered.

Kieran remained seated.

"Sir?" the manager asked carefully.

Kieran's tone was casual. "The woman who brought the file."

The manager blinked. "Lara?"

"Yes."

"She works in the branding division. Very efficient. Quiet. Keeps to herself."

"How long?"

"Three years."

Kieran nodded slowly.

No reaction outwardly.

But internally, his wolf was restless again.

Three years in the city.

Unclaimed.

Unaware.

"And her background?" he asked.

The manager hesitated. "I'm not sure of personal details."

"That's fine," Kieran said smoothly, standing. "You're dismissed."

As soon as he stepped out of the room, Marcus fell into step beside him.

"You felt it too," Marcus said quietly.

Kieran didn't look at him.

"Yes."

Marcus exhaled slowly. "Human."

"Yes."

Silence stretched between them as they entered the private elevator.

Marcus finally asked, "What do you want to do?"

Kieran's expression hardened slightly.

"Find out everything."

"Everything?"

"Family. History. Relationships. Daily routine. Who she trusts."

Marcus nodded once. "Discreetly."

"Of course."

The elevator doors opened.

Kieran stepped out, gaze distant now.

This wasn't about obsession.

It was about risk.

A human mate meant vulnerability.

And vulnerability around enemies was dangerous.

But beneath the logic, beneath the leadership, beneath the responsibility—

One simple truth remained.

He had found her.

And the bond had recognized her before he ever said her name.
