Chapter 1 - The Ridiculous System

Tokyo at night was still lively even in the depths of midnight.

From a bird's-eye view above the city, the countless lights of buildings and streets created a vibrant landscape that never seemed to sleep.

Office workers who had just finished overtime dragged their exhausted bodies toward the subway entrances. Middle-aged men wandered through the neon-lit red-light districts. In secluded alleyways where few people passed by, groups of delinquent youths gathered to pass the time.

Within this enormous metropolis of more than thirty million residents, countless stories of joy and sorrow unfolded every single moment.

Standing on the rooftop of a tall building, Jiang Hang quietly observed the surrounding district while letting out a soft sigh.

"So this is the power of Eagle Vision…"

Even towering skyscrapers made of steel and concrete could not completely block the perception granted by this ability.

"In the game, Eagle Vision was already ridiculously powerful," Jiang Hang murmured to himself. "But seeing it work in reality… this is honestly absurd."

As a transmigrator, Jiang Hang had arrived in this world one week ago. However, tonight was the first time he had come out after dark to test Eagle Vision since obtaining the Legendary Assassin System.

This ability had been part of the system's initial reward.

Strictly speaking, Jiang Hang's body was no longer that of an ordinary human. Instead, he had become a genuine assassin possessing the ancient bloodline associated with the legendary assassins of old.

Eagle Vision was merely one of the abilities granted by that bloodline.

There was also the classic Leap of Faith.

As long as there was water or something soft below—such as a haystack—he could leap from any height without suffering injury.

Of course, Jiang Hang had yet to test this ability.

After all, finding a haystack in the middle of modern Tokyo would be ridiculously unrealistic. Garbage piles might exist, but even if he did find one, Jiang Hang doubted he would have the courage to jump into it.

At first glance, the system seemed fairly decent.

However, Jiang Hang had already concluded on his first day in this world that the system attached to him was nothing but trouble.

After giving him the initial reward, the system had immediately issued a mission:

"Meet Ezio."

When Jiang Hang saw that mission, he could only stare blankly in confusion.

Soon enough, he realized what had happened.

Apparently, the system had originally intended to send him to the era of Assassin's Creed II. But for some unknown reason—perhaps it purchased the wrong "ticket" for the transmigration process—it had mistakenly delivered him to modern-day Japan instead.

The difference between those two settings was enormous.

After realizing the world transfer had gone disastrously wrong, the not-very-intelligent system had completely crashed.

It stayed inactive for nearly half a day before finally rebooting.

Fortunately, once the system restarted, it resolved Jiang Hang's identity in this world, fixed the language barrier, and even provided him with a generous amount of starting funds.

Then it immediately went silent.

For an entire week, no matter how Jiang Hang tried to communicate with it, the system gave no response whatsoever. At one point he even suspected that the system had simply run away.

Until tonight.

Suddenly, after remaining silent for seven full days, the system finally spoke again.

[System Notification]

System upgrade completed.

Due to the current era and world background, the Legendary Assassin System has been upgraded to the Legendary Detective System.

System restarting…

System startup successful.

Welcome to the Legendary Detective System.

This system will cultivate its host into a legendary detec—… detective.

Initial mission has been issued. Please complete it as soon as possible.

Jiang Hang, who had been drinking water at the time, immediately spat it out.

"So the system disappeared for an entire week… just to change its name?!"

And he had clearly heard that slip of the tongue just now.

It had almost said "legendary assassin."

Jiang Hang could practically feel the system's half-hearted attitude. It was as if the system itself had been forced into this change and reluctantly slapped on a new title.

Still, becoming a detective wasn't bad.

At least it sounded like a respectable profession.

It was certainly better than being an assassin.

Otherwise, if the system insisted on making him a legendary assassin in modern society and suddenly issued an assassination mission, that would be a serious problem.

Now that the system had officially restarted, Jiang Hang examined the interface.

The layout was simple—almost identical to a typical mobile game.

There was a character status screen, an inventory, an equipment menu, and finally a mission interface.

Other than the initial rewards, Jiang Hang didn't possess anything particularly special yet. The assassin bloodline only made his body slightly stronger than that of an ordinary person.

Naturally, he opened the mission screen.

Initial Mission:

As a detective, you must possess your own office.

Please establish and open a detective agency within one week.

Reward:

[Skill Obtained: Meditation (Beginner)]

"That's… surprisingly normal," Jiang Hang muttered.

However, besides the initial mission, several Exploration Missions had also appeared.

A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step

As a detective, you must understand the city you live in. Leave your footprints in every corner of this city.

First Stage Reward:

[Skill Obtained: Assassin Steps (Beginner)]

Hint: Observing the city from system-designated viewpoints will greatly increase mission progress.

Jiang Hang read the next mission.

Shining Feathers

A detective must possess sharp observation skills. Throughout the city are scattered mysterious feathers that only you can perceive.

Collect these feathers to complete your challenge.

First Stage Reward:

[Attribute Boost: Constitution (Beginner)]

Hint: In Eagle Vision, feathers will emit a golden glow.

Seeing these missions, Jiang Hang couldn't help but complain.

"So this is supposed to be a detective system now… but the rewards are still assassin skills?"

"Seriously, at least rename Assassin Steps."

"And the feather collection mission… that's literally copied straight from Assassin's Creed achievements."

Still, Jiang Hang quickly gave up on complaining.

Turning an assassin system into a detective system was probably difficult enough already.

In any case, the rewards were still worth obtaining.

Opening a detective agency within a week would take time, but completing some exploration missions tonight was definitely possible.

So Jiang Hang climbed to the nearest system-marked viewpoint, which happened to be the rooftop of a nearby skyscraper.

From there, he planned to survey the surrounding district.

Just now, he had tested the system's gift—Eagle Vision.

The results were astonishing.

Even from a building over a hundred meters tall, he could clearly observe the streets below. Combined with the ability's penetrating perception, his vision encountered almost no obstacles within a kilometer when standing at the viewpoint.

If he wished, nothing within that distance could escape his sight.

However, after maintaining Eagle Vision for several seconds, Jiang Hang felt a sharp strain in his eyes. Once he deactivated the ability, the discomfort slowly faded.

"For now, ten seconds seems to be my limit."

He had tested the ability several times earlier at home. At first, he could only activate it for a brief instant. Being able to maintain it for ten seconds now was already a significant improvement.

As the assassin bloodline within his body awakened further, Eagle Vision would surely grow stronger.

Of course, some of the more… questionable uses he had briefly imagined were currently impossible.

Suddenly, Jiang Hang narrowed his eyes.

"If I'm not mistaken… I think I saw something over there."

During the brief moment he activated Eagle Vision earlier, he had noticed a faint golden glow on top of a distant villa.

Even from far away, the golden light had been extremely eye-catching.

According to the mission description, that should be one of the feathers he needed to collect.

Jiang Hang stretched slightly before speaking to himself.

"Alright… let's start by collecting that feather."
