Chapter 9 - The Trenches Boy Fights Back

Chapter 9: The Trenches Boy Fights Back

The crowd held its breath as Sam staggered on the track. His legs felt like stone, his head spun, and every step threatened to collapse him again.

Timo grabbed his shoulder.

"Bro… seriously! You're supposed to be running, not auditioning for a hospital bed!"

Sam shook his head, trying to clear the dizziness.

"I… can't stop… now," he whispered.

Timo's eyes darted around. He spotted Brian smirking confidently at the finish line.

"Okay, plan time," Timo muttered. "Operation: Mess With Brian!"

Before Sam could protest, Timo grabbed a stick and waved it at Brian.

"Hey! Watch out! Snake!" he shouted.

Brian spun around. Students gasped, some laughing.

"What?!" Brian yelled, stumbling slightly.

The distraction worked. Sam stumbled too, but he caught himself. His legs screamed in protest, but something inside him roared louder: he refused to be humiliated.

From the side, Aisha leaned over. Her eyes narrowed. She quickly tossed a small cup of water toward Sam.

"Drink it," she whispered.

Sam caught the cup. One sip, and he felt a slight surge of energy.

"Thanks," he muttered quietly.

Timo grinned. "See? I told you, emotional support works."

Sam smirked faintly. "That's not why I'm standing."

He focused, remembering every early morning, every heavy sack, every hungry day. Every struggle from the trenches.

He lifted his body higher, planted his feet firmly, and took the first real step toward the finish line.

The crowd erupted.

Brian's confident smirk faltered.

"What…?" he muttered.

Timo jumped up and down. "BRO! You're doing it! Go, go, go!"

Sam's pace grew stronger. His legs moved like they belonged to someone unstoppable.

Brian tried to speed up, but his confidence wavered.

Aisha's heart raced. She clapped silently, wishing she could shout but knowing it might distract him.

Step by step, Sam closed the gap. Brian's lead was shrinking.

The students were shouting now, some on the edge of the track, phones raised.

"Go Sam! Go!"

Timo waved his arms like a man possessed. "The trenches boy will rise!"

Brian glared, realizing this was no ordinary boy.

Sam's vision blurred slightly again—but he ignored it. He would not fall.

And just as Brian thought he had regained control…

Sam's hand grazed the finish line.

The crowd erupted into screams and cheers.

Brian's jaw dropped.

Timo screamed at the top of his lungs. "WE DID IT! YOU DID IT, BRO!"

Sam fell to his knees briefly, exhausted but triumphant.

Aisha rushed forward, eyes shining.

"You… you did it," she said softly, smiling.

Sam looked up at her and smiled faintly.

"Yeah," he whispered. "We did it."

Brian stood frozen, staring at Sam. Respect, shock, and something else—curiosity—mixed in his expression.

Timo grabbed Sam and lifted him up.

"BRO! You just became LEGENDARY!"

Sam laughed weakly. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves."

But in his heart, he knew something important: he had survived the trap, and he had shown everyone—especially himself—what the trenches boy was made of.

The race wasn't over yet, but Sam had already won something much bigger: pride and courage.
