Chapter 3 - out from the sea

The next day, the kingdom of Corallia was abuzz with excitement. The sea creatures were all gathered, dressed in their finest attire, to witness the crowning of Aurelia as their new queen. Aurelia sat beside her parents, Sebastian and Lyrica, looking radiant in her ceremonial gown.

The ceremony began, with music and dancing, singing and celebration. But as the moment arrived for Aurelia to be crowned, a murmur of dissent rippled through the crowd. Some of the elders, their faces stern and disapproving, stepped forward.

"She's not a true child of Corallia!" one of them shouted. "We won't let an outsider rule us!"

The crowd fell silent, and Aurelia's eyes widened in shock. Sebastian stood up, his voice calm but firm. "She is our daughter, in every way that matters," he said. "We raised her, loved her, and trained her to be our queen."

But the elders were unmoved. "According to tradition, everyone must accept the leader," one of them said, his voice cold. "Otherwise, there will be no coronation."

Lyrica's face was pale, but she stood up, her voice ringing out. "Enough!" she said, her eyes flashing. "Everyone, go quiet!"

The crowd fell silent, and Aurelia turned to her parents, her eyes filled with questions. "Is it true?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Am I not...your biological child?"

Sebastian and Lyrica exchanged a worried glance. "Aurelia, sweetie..." Lyrica began, but Aurelia cut her off.

"Tell me the truth," she said, her voice shaking.

Sebastian nodded, his eyes filled with sadness. "You're right, Aurelia. We found you as a baby, floating in the sea. But we've always loved you as our own, and we consider you our true daughter."

Aurelia's face crumbled, and she shook her head, feeling a mix of shock and anger. She turned and swam away, leaving the stunned crowd behind. Sebastian called out her name, but she didn't turn back.

As she swam through the crowds, Lyra, the girl Aurelia had met the day before, appeared at her side. Lyra's eyes were filled with concern, and she quietly followed Aurelia as she swam away from the palace, into the unknown.

Aurelia swam to the surface of the sea, the warm sunlight dancing across her face as she broke through the waves. She gazed out at the endless blue, her eyes filled with tears as she struggled to process the shocking revelation. She was about to let her emotions pour out in a song when Lyra cleared her throat behind her.

"Excuse me for the interruption," Lyra said, her voice soft, "but are you always like this? I mean, sing when you're emotional?"

Aurelia sighed, feeling a little self-conscious, and turned to face Lyra. "It's a way of calming myself down," she said, her voice a little shaky.

Lyra's expression was sympathetic. "I saw what happened," she said, her eyes filled with concern. "I was worried about you, so I followed you."

Aurelia looked away, feeling a pang of sadness. "They're right, you know. I don't belong there."

Lyra took Aurelia's hand, her grip warm and reassuring. "You're their princess, the king and queen's daughter," she said, her voice firm. "Even if you're not their biological child, you're still their family. Without you, they're incomplete."

Aurelia's eyes welled up with tears again, but this time, they were tears of gratitude. "Thank you," she whispered, smiling at Lyra.

Lyra smiled back, her eyes sparkling. "So, are you going back?"

Aurelia shook her head, her jaw set in determination. "Not yet. I need to find my real parents."

Lyra nodded, her expression resolute. "Okay. How are we supposed to do that?"

Aurelia looked at Lyra in confusion, and asked, "We?"

Lyra nodded emphatically. "Yeah, I'm going too. Besides, you're my friend, and friends stick together."

Aurelia's face lit up with a mix of surprise and happiness. "Really? You want to be my friend?"

Lyra laughed, her eyes shining with amusement. "I'm already your friend."

Aurelia's face softened, and she hugged Lyra tightly. "Thank you," she whispered.

Lyra hugged her back, her voice muffled. "You're welcome."

Minutes later

Aurelia and Lyra swam to a nearby rock, their tails swishing in the water as they hoisted themselves up onto the sun-warmed surface. They sat side by side, their tails touching the water's edge, and looked at each other with a shared concern.

"How are we going to land on this tail?" Lyra asked, her brow furrowed.

Aurelia's face scratched with determination. "Let's see if we can walk on our tail like humans do," she said, a mischievous glink in her eye.

Lyra nodded, and together they slid off the rock and onto the sand. As their tails touched the ground, a strange sensation washed over them, like a shiver running down their spines. They felt something shifting, a magical energy coursing through their bodies, and they stumbled, falling onto the sand.

A soft, golden light enveloped them, and they watched in awe as their tails transformed, their fins giving way to...feet.

They stared down at their new appendages, their eyes wide with shock.

"We...we human tail!" Lyra exclaimed, her voice barely above a whisper.

Aurelia's face was a picture of wonder. "Our human tails," she breathed, her eyes shining with excitement.

They stared at each other, their faces alight with a mix of amazement and uncertainty.

"What do we do now?" Lyra asked, her voice lipped with laughter.

Aurelia grinned, a spark of adventure in her eyes. "We take our first steps, I guess."

And with that, they both stood up, w wanked, and promptly fell back onto the sand, laughing.

Aurelia and Lyra wanked and wiggled, their legs flapping like fish out of water as they tried to walk. They stumbled, tripped, and fell onto the sand with a thud.

"Maybe we're meant to swim," Lyra suggested, panting.

They tried again, this time flapping their arms like fins, but they didn't move an inch. It was like they were stuck in mermaid quicksand.

Just as they were about to give up, a tiny human tot toddled up to them, giggling like mad.

"You're mermaids!" the kid exclaimed, eyes shining like stars.

Aurelia and Lyra exchanged a panicked look and quickly shook their heads. "No, no, we're...uh...just..."

The kid laughed, a squeaky sound that made them want to laugh too. "I saw! You had tails, and now you have feet! You're mermaids!"

Lyra sighed, throwing up her hands. "Fine, you get us. But how do these...human tails...even work?"

The kid burst out laughing. "Those are feet, silly! Not human tails!"

Aurelia nodded, looking sheepish. "Okay...feet."

The kid started moving around, demonstrating how to walk, and Aurelia and Lyra tried to follow. But it was like they had forgotten how to breathe. They stumbled, wanked, and lurched forward, looking like a pair of zombies who had just crawled out of the grave.

Lyra tripped and fell, landing on her butt with a thump. "This is harder than it looks!"

Aurelia stumbled over to her, giggling. "At least we're not alone."

The kid laughed, holding his belly. "You're so funny, mermaid ladies!"

Aurelia grinned, and Lyra shot her a look. "Hey, we're trying to learn here!"

The kid grinned, offering them a hand. "I'll teach you, but you have to promise to come to my birthday party."

Aurelia and Lyra looked at each other, and without a word, they nodded in unison.
