The morning his father died, Kyon Wilson was already awake.
He'd been awake since four. He was usually awake by four. Sleep in that apartment was not so much a thing you did as a thing you survived, and some nights the math didn't work out in your favor. The walls were thin. The pipes knocked. And Darnell Wilson, when he drank heavy, which was every night that ended in a why, moved through the apartment with the specific unpredictability of a man who had stopped caring what he broke.
So Kyon waited. That was the system. You stayed still in the dark and you listened for the sounds that told you what kind of night it was, and when you knew what kind of night it was, you made the adjustments. It was not a complicated system. It had kept him out of the emergency room for fourteen months.
He lay on his back in the narrow bed and stared at the ceiling and listened to his father move from the kitchen to the bathroom to the kitchen again. He counted the footsteps. He mapped the trajectory. His father's pattern when he was drinking bourbon, which he could tell from the smell that came under the door, was clockwise — kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, back to the kitchen. When he was drinking beer it was counterclockwise. When he was mixing, which happened on Fridays, all bets were off.
It was a Tuesday. Bourbon night. Clockwise. Kyon breathed slowly and ran his finger along the crack in the plaster above his bed — a crack shaped vaguely like a river delta that he had memorized so completely he could have drawn it from memory in any direction. He had been staring at that crack since he was nine. He was seventeen now. He had watched it grow two inches longer and branch twice.
At 1:48 AM he heard the apartment door open and close. His father's car keys jangling. Then nothing.
He lay there another minute. Then he got up, went to the window, and watched the Dodge Charger pull away from the curb with one working taillight.
That was the last time he saw it.
He went back to bed. He fell asleep around two. He didn't dream.

The call came at six-fifteen in the morning, while Kyon was doing push-ups on the kitchen floor. The voice on the other end was a woman's. Flat, practiced, the voice of someone who made these calls for a living and had built a professional distance from them that Kyon respected immediately.
She told him that a Darnell Earl Wilson had been in a single-vehicle accident on Route 9 at approximately 2:17 AM. She told him the vehicle had struck a utility pole at an estimated speed of sixty-one miles per hour. She told him that Darnell Earl Wilson had been pronounced dead at the scene.
Kyon said, "Okay."
She gave him a case number and a contact number for the county medical examiner and said someone from the city's family services division would be in touch within twenty-four hours regarding next of kin procedures, as he was a minor. He wrote the numbers down on the back of a utility bill.
He thanked her. He hung up. He stood in the kitchen for a moment, the phone in his hand, and then he set it on the counter and went back to the floor and did the last thirty-two push-ups.
He counted them out loud. Not because it helped him keep track. Because saying numbers out loud was something to do with his mouth other than whatever his mouth might have done if he'd let it do something else.
When he was done, he got up and ate a half a sleeve of saltine crackers and drank two glasses of water. He looked in the refrigerator, which contained a bottle of hot sauce, a third of a stick of butter, and something in a Tupperware that he'd long stopped opening. He closed the refrigerator. He found a bag of dry rice in the cabinet above the stove and measured out two cups with the measuring cup that had a broken handle and put it on to boil.
He ate the rice standing at the kitchen counter, no salt, no seasoning, because there wasn't any. He ate all of it. When your body doesn't know when the next meal is coming, you learn not to waste the ones in front of you.
Then he went to school, because missing school meant attention, and attention meant questions, and questions meant people getting a look at things that were none of their business.

His mother — who was not in the picture in any sense that mattered, who had left when Kyon was four and sent birthday cards until he was seven and then stopped — had wanted to name him Kyron. He stood six-foot-three in his socks. He weighed, at last count, a hundred and sixty-eight pounds. This was not a strong hundred and sixty-eight. He walked through school the way he walked everywhere — on the outside of any group, in the margins, taking up as little space as possible while being physically incapable of being small. Six-foot-three doesn't hide. But you can be present without being accessible, and Kyon had mastered that distinction by the time he was fourteen.
He had no friends. This was not a complaint. He'd had something close to a friend once — a kid named Darius in eighth grade who sat next to him in math and thought he was funny and who Kyon had let get closer than was probably smart, and then Darius had come to the apartment one afternoon and seen what the apartment was like and seen what Darnell was like on a Tuesday afternoon, and after that the distance had grown back in a week. Kyon had helped it along. It was easier than watching someone try to figure out what to say.
He passed through his classes like a ghost. He did his work. He was not a bad student — he had a particular aptitude for math and for anything that required pattern recognition, which his teachers variously attributed to intelligence or diligence when the real explanation was simpler: pattern recognition was how you stayed safe when you lived with an unpredictable man. You got good at it.
By the end of first period, the woman from family services had already called the school.

She had a box of tissues on her desk and a motivational poster on the wall behind her that said EVERY STORM RUNS OUT OF RAIN above a photograph of a lighthouse. She was a decent woman who had chosen a job that required her to deliver difficult news to teenagers on a regular basis, and she had developed for this purpose a particular expression — compassionate, steady, forward-leaning — that she deployed the moment Kyon sat down.
He recognized the expression. He'd seen it in different contexts, on different faces, but the infrastructure was always the same: a slight softening around the eyes, the jaw set for patience, the hands clasped or open on the desk, telegraphing safety.
"Kyon," she said, "I received a call this morning from the county."
"I know," he said.
She paused. "You know?"
"They called me at six-fifteen."
Another pause. She was recalibrating, deciding how much of her prepared approach to keep. "I'm so sorry. About your father."
He nodded. He was looking at the window behind her. It was a gray October morning. The leaves on the tree outside had gone yellow and most of them had come down in the rain last week.
"I want you to know that you don't have to be strong right now," she said. "Whatever you're feeling—"
"Do I have to go to class?" he said.
She stopped. "Sorry?"
"The rest of today. Do I have to go to class, or—"
"Oh." She sat back slightly. "No. You can go home if—"
"I don't want to go home." He said it immediately, without elaboration, and then caught himself and added: "I'd rather be here."
She studied him for a moment. He kept his face neutral and waited.
"Of course," she said. "You can stay in here as long as you need. Or I can call someone — is there family? An aunt, an uncle—"
"No," he said. "It's fine. I'll go back to class."
He stood up. She stood too, instinctively, because people stood when other people stood.
"Kyon." She said it with a weight in it that he recognized — the weight of someone who wants to say something real and isn't sure if they have the right. "If you need to talk. Or if there's anything — anything at all that you need right now—"
He nodded. He picked up his backpack. At the door he turned back and said, "The tissues. You should move those to the other side of the desk. Right now they're where the light hits and it makes the box look kind of orange."
She blinked. "I — what?"
"It's fine," he said. "Never mind."
He went back to class. He took notes. He answered a question in AP Bio about the sodium-potassium pump and got it right. He ate the second half of his saltines at lunch, alone at the end of a long table, and drank two cartons of the free milk.
Nobody bothered him that day. That happened sometimes, when the universe was in a cooperative mood.

The three of them — DeShawn Morris, a junior named Pos whose real name was actually Pos, and a kid everyone called Wick — had been making Kyon's life intermittently difficult since September. The situation had been building slowly over five weeks, which was its own kind of exhausting — waiting for something to come to a head while trying to maintain the equilibrium that had kept it from coming to a head. Kyon had gotten very good at the geometry of school hallways, at knowing which corners they tended to cluster around at which times, at finding the slightly longer routes that arrived at the same destinations without the intersections.
But a week after his father's death, at 3:47 PM on a Thursday afternoon, the geometry failed him.
He was walking home. He had been at school late — not for anything in particular, just because the apartment was empty now and had been empty for a week and he was not in a rush to return to it. He'd sat in the library until they kicked him out and he was cutting through the small alley behind the old Key Food on Mercer when he heard them behind him.
Three sets of footsteps. He had counted them before he turned around.
"Yo, Scarecrow."
That was DeShawn's name for him. Scarecrow. Because of the frame — too tall, too thin, arms that went too far. Kyon turned around and looked at them without urgency, the way he looked at everything, assessing.
DeShawn was maybe five-eleven, built wide through the shoulders, wearing a gray hoodie. Pos was shorter, heavier, standing slightly behind and to the left. Wick was on the right. They had that particular arrangement that wasn't quite a confrontation but was clearly angled toward one, the loose geometry of people who had something in mind but wanted deniability until they committed.
"Going home?" DeShawn said.
Kyon said nothing. He waited.
"Heard about your pops," DeShawn said. "That's tough."
There was nothing to do with that sentence. It was not sympathy and it was not quite cruelty — it was just an instrument, something to prod with, looking for a response.
"You deaf?" Pos said. "He's talking to you."
"I heard him," Kyon said.
DeShawn took a step forward. Not a long one — not the kind that meant he'd already decided. The exploratory kind. The kind that's really a question.
"You got a smart-ass mouth on you," DeShawn said. "You know that?"
Kyon looked at him. He registered the shoulder positioning — both loose, weight distributed evenly, not loaded yet. He registered Wick shifting to the right, trying to get a wider angle. He registered Pos hanging back, which meant Pos was not the threat, Pos was the audience.
"I'm going home," Kyon said. He turned to go.
DeShawn grabbed his shoulder.
Not hard. More like punctuation. But punctuation with hands has consequences.
Kyon turned back and took a step to his right and DeShawn's grip slipped off his shoulder because Kyon had moved before the grip could anchor. It wasn't a martial arts thing — it was the reflex of a boy who had been grabbed in dark rooms and had learned, without anyone teaching him, that the window between a grab and a hit was measured in tenths of a second and you had to be moving before the grip settled.
DeShawn blinked. He'd expected resistance in the other direction — a shrug, a pull-back, something that confirmed the contact. The lateral step had confused the script.
"The hell—"
He swung. The right hand, loaded, going for the jaw. Kyon saw the shoulder drop a half-second before the arm came and he was already moving — a slight lean back from the waist, letting the punch pass in front of his face with two inches of clearance, the air moving past his cheek like a word said too close.
Wick came in from the right with a wild hook. Kyon ducked it — genuinely ducked, knees bending, upper body dropping six inches, the hook sailing over his head with a sound like fabric tearing. He came back up.
DeShawn threw again. Kyon slipped left and the punch caught nothing.
Pos finally moved — came forward with something between a push and a punch aimed at Kyon's chest. Kyon sidestepped it entirely, the flat slide of a man who had practiced this, except he had not practiced it. He had just lived it. His feet moved him before his brain called the order. His body had an old, deep understanding of this particular geometry — of multiple people in a small space trying to land something — and it had been solving this problem for years.
They swung at him four more times. He was hit once — Wick's second attempt caught him on the forearm as he was covering, numbing his arm to the elbow — but nothing landed clean. After the fourth miss DeShawn stepped back, breathing hard, looking at Kyon with something that was no longer the loose confidence he'd walked up with.
"The hell is wrong with you?" DeShawn said. Not angry. Genuinely asking.
Kyon said nothing. He was watching all three of them.
After a moment, DeShawn shook his head. "You're weird," he said. And then, because there was nothing else to do with it, they left. Just turned around and walked back the way they'd come, and after a minute Pos said something Kyon couldn't hear and they all laughed, and then they were gone.
Kyon stood in the alley for a moment. His arm was starting to throb. He rotated the wrist — still working, no break. He took a slow breath.
Then he walked to the wall of the Key Food — old red brick, close-mortared, solid — and stood in front of it for ten seconds. He was aware that this was not a reasonable thing to do. He did it anyway. He drew his right hand back, made a fist, and put it into the wall.
Not a slap. A punch. A real punch, everything he had behind it, twisting from the hip the way he'd seen in the YouTube videos he watched sometimes at the library when nobody was looking.
The impact went from his knuckles to his wrist to his elbow to his shoulder in a wave that almost knocked him sideways. The brick took a white scar. His knuckles split — three of them, the middle ones, blood welling up immediately, painting the brick in a clear red print that showed four knuckles and half a palm.
He stood there with his bleeding fist against the wall and breathed.
He did it again.
Weaker this time — the pain had arrived and it was loud — but he planted it again, same spot, same angle. The second print overlapped the first. More blood. The brick had a smear now, a dark, wet record of something he wasn't able to explain yet.
He stepped back. He wrapped his bleeding hand in the tail of his shirt. And he walked home.

He was not a tall man — five-nine, sixty-one years old, carrying two hundred and seven pounds distributed across a frame that had been middleweight once and remembered it with a kind of structural stubbornness, the muscle long converted to something thicker and more settled but still visible in the shoulders, still obvious in the way he moved. He had a face like a knuckle — compact, weathered, with a nose that had been broken twice and reset badly and then broken again and set worse. He wore a gray canvas jacket with a hood he never put up and boots that had seen their last oil change three winters ago.
He had come out of the pharmacy on the corner with a prescription for blood pressure medication and a bag of sour cream and onion chips, which were the exact opposite of what his doctor told him to eat. He was standing on the corner eating the chips when the three boys followed the tall kid into the alley.
He'd watched a lot of fights in his life. He'd had a lot of fights in his life. He knew the sound of a confrontation becoming a beating and he knew the sound of something else. What came from the alley was something else.
He walked to the alley entrance and stood there and watched. He saw the punches that didn't land. He saw the footwork — if you could call it that, it was too raw and instinctive to be called footwork by anyone with a technical vocabulary, but the bones of it, the geometry of the movement, the way the kid's body subtracted itself from the trajectories aimed at it — he saw that clearly.
He watched a six-foot-three child make three people miss him like he was made of cigarette smoke.
And then the three boys left, and Dumas watched the kid go to the wall.
He watched the first punch. He heard the sound of it — that particular crack-thud of a bare fist hitting brick, which he had heard before in other contexts and which had a specific meaning that other sounds did not. He watched the kid's hips. He watched the rotation. He watched the follow-through.
He stood there for a moment after the kid walked away.
He looked at the wall. He could see the bloodstain from where he stood.
Earl Dumas ate three more chips. He thought about what he'd just seen. He thought about the kid's eyes — he'd caught a look at them during the confrontation, from across the street, not a clear look but enough. Calm. Not the calm of someone who wasn't afraid. He thought about what a trainer calls a gift, and how rarely he'd actually seen one, and what happened to gifts when nobody picked them up.
He folded the chip bag over and put it in his jacket pocket. He had eaten more chips than he should have. The blood pressure was not going to thank him.
Then he went to find out which direction the kid had walked.

Kyon was three blocks from home, sitting on a bus stop bench he didn't intend to use for a bus, his hand wrapped in his shirt, watching the cars go by, when Earl Dumas sat down next to him.
He didn't say anything at first. He just sat there, which Kyon respected — people who sat down next to you and immediately launched into something were not people whose presence you could evaluate correctly. You needed a minute to understand what a person was made of, and the minute only worked if the person gave you the quiet to use it.
After about ninety seconds, Dumas said: "You're bleeding through the shirt."
Kyon looked at his hand. He was. Dark stain coming through the cotton, not arterial, not dangerous, but visible.
"Brick," Kyon said.
"I know. I was watching." He said it without apology or explanation, just a statement of fact. "You hit it twice."
Kyon looked at him. Dumas was looking at the street. He had an old face — not unkind, but not soft either. The face of someone who had done work that left marks.
"You looked at my hands," Kyon said. "Before you sat down."
Dumas glanced at him. "How do you know that?"
"I saw your shadow cross before you sat. You stopped. Then you moved again and sat. You were looking at my hands."
A pause. "Correct," Dumas said. "What'd you figure I was thinking?"
"That the knuckle split was wrong for a street fight," Kyon said. "If I'd punched a person, the skin breaks at the second-and-third, maybe the index. Brick splits at the middle knuckles because you lose the alignment on a flat surface. You looked because you wanted to know if I'd punched a wall or a person."
Dumas was quiet for a moment. "You read me that fast."
"I read everybody that fast."
"And what am I reading you for right now?"
Kyon was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "You watched the alley. You want to know if what you saw was what you think you saw."
"And what do I think I saw?"
Kyon didn't answer that. He was not in the business of telling people what they thought.
Dumas reached into his jacket pocket and produced the folded chip bag, a pharmacy receipt, a phone, and a business card. He set the business card on the bench between them. It was a simple card: DUMAS BOXING. An address on Prospect Ave. A phone number. No website.
"I run a gym," Dumas said. "Been running it for twenty years. Had maybe thirty kids come through, nine turned professional, two had real careers. The rest—" He made a brief gesture that meant the rest of the story was not particularly different from most stories.
"I've got no use for a gym," Kyon said.
"You sure?"
"I've got no money."
"I didn't ask about money."
Kyon looked at the card. Plain white, black text, no logo. The address was maybe twelve blocks from where he was sitting.
"I watched you move," Dumas said. "In the alley. Three on one, you didn't get hit clean once."
"I got tagged on the arm."
"That was your cover, not your defense. Those are different things." He paused. "You knew they were different things, which is interesting."
Kyon said nothing.
"You've never trained," Dumas said. It wasn't a question.
"No."
"What you did in that alley. Where'd that come from?"
Kyon thought about that for a moment. He decided the honest answer was the only one that made sense to offer. "Practice," he said. "Different kind."
Dumas nodded. He understood what that meant. Kyon could tell he understood, and was grateful he didn't push it.
"Those boys are going to come back," Dumas said. "You know that."
"Probably."
"Slipping punches keeps you safe. Doesn't solve the problem."
"I know."
"The gym," Dumas said, "is where you learn to solve the problem."
Kyon was quiet. A bus went by, not his, nobody on it. The leaves from the sidewalk tree skittered across the pavement in the wind.
"You want me to teach you how to fight," Kyon said.
"I want to teach you how to box," Dumas said. "They're related but they're not the same thing. Fighting is what you did in the alley. It's useful and it's going to get you killed or in prison before you're twenty. Boxing is what you do with that in a place where it has rules and a purpose and somewhere to go."
Kyon picked up the card. He looked at it.
"My situation," he said carefully, "is complicated right now."
"Most things worth doing have a complicated situation around them."
"My father died," Kyon said. He said it plainly, the way you say the weather. "Last week. I'm technically a ward of the state right now, I'm still living in the apartment but I've got a caseworker I haven't met yet and I don't know what's happening in the next month."
Dumas was quiet. Then he said, "I'm sorry about your father."
"He wasn't a good man," Kyon said. Not to wound, not to process — just because it was true and operating with accurate information seemed important.
Dumas absorbed that. "Doesn't make losing him easier necessarily."
"No," Kyon agreed. "It's just what's true."
Another quiet. The good kind, where two people are thinking.
"The gym's open at five AM," Dumas said. "If your situation means you can't be there after school, come in the morning. Doors open at five, I'm there by five-fifteen. You'd be out before seven. First period at your school is when?"
"Eight-oh-five."
"So you'd have time."
Kyon turned the card over. There was nothing on the back.
"Why?" he said. "You don't know me."
Dumas looked at him. The old fight face, up close, reading him back.
"Because I saw something today that I've been in this business for forty years and seen maybe four, five times. And every single one of those times I saw it and didn't do anything about it, that person ended up—" He stopped. He started again. "I've got enough regret from the times I looked away. I'm too old to collect more."
Kyon held the card in his hand. He thought about the morning — the call at six-fifteen, the push-ups, the saltines. He thought about the alley, the feeling of the punches moving past him, the odd, clarifying calm that had settled over him when it was happening. He thought about the wall and his knuckles against the brick and the thing that had needed somewhere to go and had found the wall instead.
He thought about being seventeen and six-foot-three and a hundred and sixty-eight pounds and alone in a city apartment where the lease was in a dead man's name.
He put the card in his pocket.
"Five-fifteen," he said.
"If you're not there in the first week," Dumas said, "I'll assume you changed your mind. After the first week, I'll come find you."
"How will you find me?"
"I already know what school you go to."
"How?"
"The same way you knew I'd looked at your hands," Dumas said. "I pay attention."
He stood up, joints popping audibly, and put his hands in his jacket pockets. He nodded once at Kyon and walked away, moving against the wind with his head down, the gray canvas jacket snapping at his sides.
Kyon watched him go. Then he looked down at his hand, which was still wrapped in the tail of his shirt, which was stiff now where the blood had dried.
He unwrapped it. Three split knuckles, all of them crusted over, the skin raised and dark. He made a fist slowly. It hurt. He held the fist for a moment — looking at it not with satisfaction exactly, but with something adjacent to it. The recognition of a thing that had been done and could not be undone.
He opened his hand.
He looked at the card in his palm.
DUMAS BOXING. Prospect Ave.
Twelve blocks.

At nine PM his caseworker called. Her name was Brenda Holloway and she was efficient and direct, which he was grateful for. She told him that he had two options: placement in a licensed foster home or a group residence for youth, pending any extended family contact. She told him a family contact search was ongoing. She told him that in the meantime, with the school confirming his enrollment and regular attendance, she was comfortable with a supervised independent arrangement for the short term, which meant he could stay in the apartment while arrangements were made.
He told her yes. She told him she'd be by on Friday. He thanked her.
After he hung up he sat on the edge of his bed in the dark. He did not turn on the light. The apartment was never quite dark — the streetlight came through the window and striped the floor with a yellow bar that shifted through the night as the cars went by.
He sat there for a while. He was not crying. He was not particularly close to crying. He was doing the thing he sometimes did in the dark, which was to take an inventory — not of feelings, he was bad at that, but of facts. What was true. What remained. What the next twenty-four hours needed to look like.
His father was dead. This was true.
He was seventeen and alone in an apartment where the lease would eventually become a problem. This was true.
He had a card in his pocket with an address on it and a conversation that he didn't entirely understand but which had felt, strangely, like being seen by someone who knew what they were looking for.
He reached into his pocket and held the card in the dark. He didn't need to read it. He'd read it enough.
Five-fifteen AM.
He thought: okay.
He thought: it's something.
He thought about the three boys in the alley, and the way their punches had passed through the air where he'd been, and the particular sensation of that — not triumph, not pride, just the clean mechanical satisfaction of a problem presented and a body that knew the answer before the mind did.
And then he thought about what Dumas had said.
Fighting is what you did in the alley. Boxing is what you do with that.
He turned this over for a long time. He was not sure he was ready for it. He was not sure what ready would look like from the inside. He lay back on the bed. He set the card on the nightstand. He looked at the crack in the ceiling — the river delta, unchanged, patient.
He set his alarm for four-thirty.

He was at the gym door at five-twelve.
It was a converted auto shop on Prospect, just like the card said — a wide roll-up door that was down, a smaller door beside it that was up, yellow light coming from inside. The sign above the door was hand-lettered, black paint on wood: DUMAS BOXING. No tagline. No decorated border. Just the name and what it was.
He stood outside for a moment. The morning was cold and very dark, October making itself known. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt and sweatpants and the only sneakers he owned, which were not particularly good sneakers but were in reasonable repair. His backpack was on his shoulder. He had put his school clothes in the backpack, anticipating this.
He went inside.
The smell hit him first: canvas and rubber and old sweat and the thin sharp undercurrent of something chemical — liniment, maybe, or antiseptic. It was not a bad smell. It was specific and consistent, the smell of a place that had a purpose and pursued it without apology.
The gym was not large. One ring, twelve by twelve, canvas patched in two places, ropes that had been replaced recently — he could tell from the color difference, the new rope brighter against the old fittings. Four heavy bags hanging at different heights along one wall. A double-end bag in the corner. A speed bag platform at the far end. A row of lockers with most of the doors standing open. Mirrors on two walls — old mirrors, slightly warped at the edges, the kind that didn't lie about you but didn't flatter you either. A jump rope rack. A small table with a tape dispenser and a spray bottle and a stack of hand wraps.
And Earl Dumas, who was in the middle of wrapping his own hands at the table, and who looked up when Kyon came in and said, "Five-twelve. Not bad."
"I was here at five-eleven," Kyon said. "I waited outside."
Dumas looked at him for a moment. "Why?"
"Didn't know the protocol."
"Protocol is, if the light's on, come in." He went back to wrapping his hands. "Drop your bag on the bench. There's clean hand wraps on the table. White ones, not the red — the red are mine."
Kyon set his backpack on the bench and went to the table and picked up the white hand wraps. He had watched, in the months before this morning, approximately forty-five minutes of YouTube tutorials on hand wrapping, from three different sources, because if he was going to do a thing he was going to understand the thing before he did it. He wrapped his hands — thumb loop, three passes over the wrist, three over the knuckles, X across the palm, lock at the wrist. It wasn't perfect but it was structurally sound.
Dumas watched him do it. "You watched videos," he said.
"Yes."
"Not bad. Your X is off — you want it tighter on the third metacarpal."
"Here?" Kyon pointed.
"There. Unwrap and try again."
He unwrapped. He did it again. Better.
"Better," Dumas said. "We'll fix the rest over time. Come here."
He stood in the center of the gym floor and looked at Kyon for a long moment. Kyon stood and let himself be looked at. He was used to being looked at as a size, an inconvenience, a curiosity. This was different — the look of someone conducting an actual inventory.
"Stance," Dumas said. "Feet."
Kyon put his feet shoulder-width apart.
"Good. Now stagger them — right foot back six inches, toe pointing out at forty-five. Left foot forward, toe pointing at me."
He moved his feet.
"Knees soft. Not bent, soft. There's a difference. Bend is a position, soft is a readiness. You're not sitting in a chair — you're ready to stop sitting in a chair."
Kyon adjusted.
"Hands up."
He raised his hands.
"Not there. Higher. Left hand at eyebrow level, right hand at cheekbone. Elbows down — not out, not clamped, down. They're protecting your ribs by existing below the angle of attack, not by being glued to your sides."
More adjustment. He could feel how unnatural it was — or not unnatural exactly, but new, a position his body hadn't lived in long enough to own.
"Chin," Dumas said. "Down. You're presenting your jaw to me right now like it's a gift. Your chin stays tucked. Look at me from under your eyebrows."
Kyon tucked his chin.
Dumas walked around him slowly. He reached out and adjusted Kyon's lead shoulder without warning — turned it in slightly, angling his profile to reduce the target area. Then he adjusted his rear elbow, dropping it half an inch.
"Now move," Dumas said. "Don't go anywhere, just move."
Kyon moved. He shifted his weight, stepped left, stepped right, feeling the position while moving, testing whether it held.
Dumas watched.
"Stop," he said. "Your feet are crossing."
"I know."
"Don't."
"How do you keep them from crossing when you move laterally?"
"Step-slide," Dumas said. "The lead foot goes first, the rear foot follows. You never cross, you never close. Your feet stay in the same relationship to each other as your base."
He demonstrated. For a man of his age and size he moved with a liquid economy that Kyon noted and filed — not imitation, not yet, but data.
"Try."
Kyon tried. He crossed his feet on the third step.
"Again."
He tried again. He crossed on the second step.
"Again."
On the fifth attempt he went four steps without crossing. On the seventh he went eight. By the end of the first twenty minutes, he was circling the gym floor with his feet working correctly most of the time, his chin down, his hands in position.
Dumas watched all of it without comment. He watched the way someone watches something they already knew the shape of and are now seeing confirmed.
At six-forty he said, "That's enough for today."
Kyon stopped. He wasn't breathing hard. His legs were a little tired — the position, the constant small adjustments — but not badly.
"That's it?" he said.
"That's the foundation," Dumas said. "You don't build anything on a foundation that isn't solid. You've got a natural athletic base — your movement instincts are better than anyone I've started from scratch with. But instinct and technique are two different tools. What you have is the instinct. What we're building is the technique. The two together are when it gets interesting."
He handed Kyon a towel from a stack on the shelf by the lockers. It was clean, folded.
"Monday," Dumas said. "Five-fifteen. We'll work footwork again and I'll put you on the bag."
"Monday," Kyon said.
He changed in the locker room — school clothes from his backpack — and walked out into the October morning, which had gotten slightly less dark in the ninety minutes he'd been inside. The sun was considering the eastern buildings but hadn't committed yet. His breath made small clouds.
He had almost an hour before school. He walked north on Prospect, taking the long way, because he was not ready to not be moving.
He thought about the stance. The chin. The step-slide. The vocabulary of it — terms he didn't own yet but could feel himself beginning to accumulate. He thought about Dumas walking around him and making adjustments with a quiet technical certainty, the hands of a man who had done this for decades and knew exactly where each part needed to be.
He thought about the gym — the smell, the canvas, the two patched spots on the ring floor, the warped mirrors.
He thought: this is mine.
Not the gym. The thing that had just started. The accumulation. The technique. The idea that what had kept him alive in small rooms could become something else — something organized and purposeful and pointed at a horizon he couldn't see yet but could feel, dimly, out in front of him.
The greatest of all time.
He had not said that to Dumas. He had not said it to anyone. It lived in the quietest part of him, that thought, a thought he was not ready to name out loud because naming it made it possible to fail at it.
But it was there. It had been there for a long time. He just hadn't known what shape to give it.
Now he did.
He walked to school in the October dark, his hands wrapped under his sweatshirt, his knuckles still tender, his chin down — not in defeat, not in resignation, but in the particular position of a boy who has just learned what his chin is for.
